They used to be the Orangemen, but had to change due to political reasons.

Wiki say:
The athletic nickname derives from the official color. Prior to 2004, the official nicknames of the athletic teams were the "Orangemen" and "Orangewomen." These former nicknames are still affectionately used by some fans. However, beginning with the 2004–2005 school year, the official nickname was changed to the "Orange." This revision is gender-neutral, concise, and reflects the basis of the nickname as being the school color.
According to an 1890 newspaper article uncovered by the Syracuse Post Standard, the orange was originally a reference to the Netherlands, which first colonized New York State.[19] It's common in upstate New York for place names to make reference to the Dutch heritage. In a similar way, the original settlement that became Albany was called Fort Orange.
... this seems plausible.

With as politically correct as that mascot change was

you'd think their fans would be more welcoming and inclusive. They are not.
"#### you Clemson!" ...ok fine, but I wasn't doing anything to bother you
"Go home Clemson" ...uh, we're in a restaurant in your town spending money
"You're an inbred ####, Clemson!" ...not sure how you would begin to know such things, but ok
Syracuse fans are the worst in the ACC when it comes to hospitality.

Yeah I was thinking there may have been a tie in to the Netherlands and Dutch on that, even before being politically corrected years ago.

There's a high school in upstate NY that recently changed its mascot from the Indians to something else, though, which might be what's confusing people in this thread.

They were called the Orangemen which derived from the Indian. So, thus, the term Orangemen stood for Indian. Much like the St. Johns Redmen and they changed their name to the Red Storm.

They did have a Native American mascot for a few decades, although they were still called the Orangemen/women.

PSA: Orangeman...Redman...interesting factoid
Oct 19, 2022, 4:07 PM
|
|
European's first interaction with eastern Native Americans earned them the nickname orangeman or redman. Mostly this is due to an iron oxide dust that Native Americans would run on their skin. They did this often as a sunscreen, bug repellent, help mask body odor for hunting, coloring, you name it.
They used it so much that it stained their skin almost permanently. Hence the nickname. It's not derogatory, it's just what they did, what they looked like.
Redman is only derogatory from liberals that said so.
Actual Eastern Native Americans are not naturally red (except when we go to the beach or fishing and forget to reapply).
There ya go.

It’s what you get when the SJW’s thought the Orange men of the world would be offended by the name Syracuse Orangemen. When you meet an orange human let me know. And Trump doesn’t count.
