What I saw and did not see last night....

I was at the game. I saw a fan base that was excited to turn the page on last season....I'd say the stadium was 52-Duke to 48-Clemson.

200+ yds rushing. More lateral passing. (on paper a balanced offense but not one that scared Duke). The D played ok. I saw the DL push Duke's OL into the backfield. I saw the 2nd string DL play better than the veterans. I saw some good things but I saw a lot more bad things.

I saw poor special teams play.

I saw handoffs to Mafah that took too long (more like a mesh play at the line of scrimmage) (give that kid the ball in space or deeper in the backfield to get a head of steam and so he can read his blocks).

I saw SLOW receivers. I saw Turner on the field a lot. (Really? why?) I saw receivers that could not block on screen plays.

I didn't see play makers.

I didn't see "great" anywhere on the field.

I didn't see a vertical passing game. I didn't see creative play calling.

I didn't see the D step up and dominate.

I didn't see a DC motivating and coaching his D with intensity. The D might be a reflection of their DC....Pilsbury soft. No one played with toughness. I did not see a field general leading the team on D.

I did not see a team playing with mental or physical toughness. (I don't think this can be coached but it can be nourished.)

I did not see speed....that definitely cannot be coached but it can be recruited.

In my 56 years, I've seen the wilderness when Clemson was not relevant. It was not fun. I don't want to see that again but the forces of the football world are pulling against little ole Clemson (NIL, the portal, conference realignment). I don't think the coaching staff can change those things but it can influence the change needed to create urgency, intensity and toughness needed to play at a high level football. Based on last night's on field performance, not sure if we have what is needed.

You saw (I believe) Clemson's first loss when passing and running each for 200+ yards.
