What do Tates Locke, Rick Barnes, & Oliver Purnell all have

1

Mar 15, 2023, 9:50 AM

… in common? Besides being the three top coaching hires Clemson has ever made in basketball?

And is it the truth or just a convenient rumor?

Because if it’s true, then it certainly seems awfully coincidental.

Locke admitted it in his book. Seems to be pretty common knowledge with Barnes. I work at CU and have never heard it about OP.

It has been a widely held speculation about Purnell as well.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think a very strong case can be made

3

Mar 15, 2023, 10:05 AM

That Cliff Ellis is the best coach Clemson ever had. Look at the talent he recruited and his record, especially in context of how difficult the ACC was at that time, and I think a very strong argument could be made in his case.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

One thing for sure with Ellis, we were

2

Mar 15, 2023, 10:14 AM

not short on big men during his tenure.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I had the pleasure of watching Elden Cambell and Dale Davis together.

Still think that infamous UCONN year was maybe the best team we've had. We were literally 1 second from the Elite 8 and a faceoff against Duke, who we had beaten in Littlejohn to clinch the ACC regular season title in '90.

We were already headed to the final four in my mind, and then what's his face jumps, catches a ball, lands, turns and shoots, all within a second. Riiiight.

I’m of the opinion that Cliff was our best as well. The academic status of the teams were not particularly good, but he brought in some really good players and produced strong teams on a routine every third or fourth year cycle.

Re: I think a very strong case can be made

I don't so much about Cliff recruiting talent, but he recruited big men that became good, it not great players. Basketball was an inside to outside game in those days and it is just the opposite today. In today's game you have to be able to shoot 3's and that is what makes it so unpredictable as I am sure we will see in the NCAA Tournament.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The game evolves and good coaches evolve with it.

Mar 15, 2023, 1:42 PM

Brad Brownell can’t coach half court basketball. The free-throw line is called the charity stripe for a reason. We are one of the best free-throw shooting teams in the country. But we’re at the bottom of the league in terms of free throws taken because we don’t drive to the basket and force the defense to collapse and either kick it back out or get the other team in foul trouble and score points from the free throw line. If we did that we wouldn’t go 5 and 10 minutes nearly every game without scoring a single point. But all we do is shoot the from outside and when that’s not working we lose because we can’t play half court basketball because we don’t understand basketball fundamentals. When the jump shot isn’t working you have to find a way to produce points. You do that by using the incredibly athletic big men we have as well as some decent guards to drive to the basket. Get the other team in foul trouble. Score at the free-throw line. This isn’t rocket science, but it’s like Swahili in Clemson.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hence why Coach K and to a lesser degree Roy Williams were so good***

Cliff was a good coach but seems to have run into NCAA trouble at every stop meaning there is a reason he could attract really talented players.

Seriously?

1

Mar 15, 2023, 2:45 PM

You’re hanging your hat on that as Cliff Ellis being a cheater? First, it’s not a recruiting violation. That’s what really matters in the context of the conversation. Second, Duke, and North Carolina couldn’t put teams on the court if those type of standards were applied to them. The NCAA is a joke and that kind of crap always had very selective enforcement.

Good lord, you’re really scraping the bottom of the barrel if you’re using a transcript for Wayne Buckingham as evidence that Cliff Ellis was a cheater.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Seriously?

Mar 15, 2023, 3:06 PM

You said you don't remember him getting us on probation. I provided evidence that we were indeed put on probation. I never said anything about Cliff Ellis being a cheater.

Our Sweet 16 run in 1990 doesn’t count.

Mar 15, 2023, 3:14 PM [ in reply to I don’t remember him getting us on probation. ]

NCAA sanctions wiped out our wins from that tournament entirely.

That leaves Cliff with 2 NCAA Tournament appearances in 10 years at Clemson, and a 1-2 record in those games.

He did recruit some very good big men and also won our only regular season ACC championship. And he plays beach music if you’re into that sort of thing.

"Everybody needs to know that Coach Brownell is arguably the best coach to come through Clemson." -PJ Hall

I have no doubt John Wooden was a good basketball coach.

Mar 15, 2023, 11:14 AM [ in reply to Re: I think a very strong case can be made ]

But he had the best teams money could buy, which is why he won all of those championships. The NCAA conveniently waited until a few years after he retired to put UCLA on probation. But it was well known that they had a rich booster that the players called “Uncle” who was buying that talent. Dan Patrick has talked about it a few times on his radio show.

Re: I think a very strong case can be made

Mar 15, 2023, 11:50 AM [ in reply to I think a very strong case can be made ]

He had godawful teams at times.

Like not at all competitive lose by 50 at Duke and UNC.

Like a starting point guard that belonged in a rec league.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He did. But that doesn’t change the fact that he also had success.

Mar 15, 2023, 1:44 PM

And a very strong case could be made that he’s the best coach we have had. That doesn’t mean he was great. But he was infinitely better than Brad Brownell. They only coach in modern times worse than Brad Brown was Larry Shyatt.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Bro, Brad Brownell has us at 23 wins and 3rd in the ACC

1

Mar 15, 2023, 10:32 AM

NIT aside, this is the greatest season in Clemson basketball history. And nevermind the fact he also has the most losses, but Brad has the most wins of any Clemson coach.

Brad Brownell is the greatest basketball coach, ever.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Totally off topic … thread hijack attempt.

1

Mar 15, 2023, 10:51 AM

Some discussions are actually not about Brad Brownell.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's all relative...

1

Mar 15, 2023, 10:55 AM [ in reply to Bro, Brad Brownell has us at 23 wins and 3rd in the ACC ]

The ONLY REASON CBB has the most wins of any Clemson coach is because he's held the position for THIRTEEN FRIGGIN' YEARS.

While the 23 wins and a 3rd place finish in the ACC was nice, Clemson's strength of schedule played a major role in that. Keep in mind, Clemson only had to face the top tier teams in the league just once during the regular season.

Does ANYONE really think Clemson would have finished 3rd in the league standings had they played Miami, UNC, Pitt, Duke and Virginia twice each?

Sample size for Barnes is probably too small to make a legit long-term judgement.

Could he have been consistent at Clemson for 10+ years? We’ll never know.

People forget Foster had some good talent.

Mar 15, 2023, 2:59 PM

Most people commenting are ignoring how hard the ACC was back then. I would love to see those Bill Foster and Cliff Ellis teams in today’s ACC. They would win the regular season and the tournament.

Vinny Hamilton is one of my all-time favorite Clemson players. Larry Nance was a beast! Those guys would destroy today’s ACC! Imagine Dale Davis and Elden Campbell in today’s ACC the way they could run and play in transition. Greg Buckner would be unstoppable in today’s game. Wayne Buckingham, Tree Rollins, Sharon Wright, and Horace Grant would be incredible in today’s game. They were all big, strong, fast athletic. They would dominate the ACC today. Imagine Grayson Marshall or Boogie McIntyre out there playing guard today.

Clemson has had a lot of great players come through Littlejohn Coliseum. The ACC was simply incredibly hard back then. The ACC finished the regular season rated as only the sixth best conference. But these clowns want us to think it was a historic season!
