Clemson made itself a target in recruiting

This is not a hit piece, simply an observation that may or may not be true. We've lost 7 commits so far from the '25 class, which I believe represents ~1/3 of the class.
It made me wonder, "Why us" when I don't really see other programs losing this many commits, unless their head coach has taken another job, or been fired. My conclusion is we have become a target because other programs simply don't think we will fight back to keep our recruits. We might make a counter offer and then if the bidding goes higher, we simply walk away.
Schools know we are really good at identifying talent, and they see a weakness in our ability to hold on to them, so they come after us. It's kind of like we have become the "Baby Huey" of college football where we are a big time program that lets the little guy push us around. You younger guys may not get this reference but most others will
I just think until we really take a stand, put an aggressive posture around our commits, and fight fire with fire as best as we can, this is going to continue to happen to us.
If the likes of Duke and Ga Tech can steal from us, then the excuse of not having the money or resources to compete kind of goes out the window for me.
I hope we take off the gloves and start fighting back, and defending our turf. Lots of areas need to be addressed, and I believe this is a critical one for our future success.

In fairness to Clemson a lot of recruits are asking for NFL signing bonuses before stepping foot on campus.

But everyone is faced with the same issue and seem to be dealing with it better than us based on the numbers.

and I get why Dabo doesnt like that but it also signals to your inner gut that it means one of two things:
1. You start taking fringe guys that maybe can play at a place like clemson but probably should stick with their commitment to Syracuse or Iowa St or Kentucky
2. You know that you have to go the portal to backfill your roster.
we will enviably lose 10+ guys in addition to graduates. I guess we'll see, but if you want to be the best, you have to go compete to do the same.

We are losing recruits because they know dabo doesn’t want to cut deals, like all the other big time programs are doing. That’s a fact jack.

Once they hear that clemson has offered.
This has been going on for decades. Same happens at many schools. They can't all look at 12000 kids every year.

The 2025 recruiting class will probably be the meekest class the Tigers may have in quite a while. Although I think the 2026 class will be the beginning of a comeback of sorts. With the revenue sharing starting in July 2025 it naturally will be a little late for 2025. I think we will be ok for 2025 with the returning players for next year and it will hold us over until the playing field is leveled in 2026. GO TIGERS

it just puts more cash in the pot. Maybe NIL levels out after a few years but they are entirely separate payments...or am I missing it?

That is right, if we get into a bidding war with schools that can come up with a lot more alum money than Clemson can, our NIL bank will go bankrupt after just a couple of high profile players, and just a couple wouldn't help us much at all with no money left to bring in other 4 star guys!!!
But like any, everything else, we have fans that just refuse to believe that...

I doubt Duke and Ga Tech have more than us but they did walk away with 2 of our top 100 recruits…

that either duke or gtec have more net revenue than we do. Although i bet through the years Duke basketball has brought in a lot of money with high revenue and low overhead ( cameron is cheap as it gets).

Because not every school is going to have 20.5 million to share

in net revenue, and 20.5 will be the cap. When you consider the new FMV requirements for NIL ( which will be interesting to see what the variables and factors are for that and how it works out in the real world), it is gonna be a different world come july first.

I agree with you but I think Dabo wants loyalty to the school and the program. When you have to pay to keep one, who's to say' he or they will be on the team the next year. The answer is above any solution I can come up with.

We are fast moving to an employer-employee relationship and you know how much loyalty exists under that model in the real world.
We are desperately trying to hold on to something that is quickly becoming obsolete as a model for success. Progress waits for no one…

Being a mature program with a solid history of graduating players tells us ..

..graduating players are not an essential lure to the top recruits.
It's a failing business model.
We are the Blockbusters of recruiting facing Netflix.

They just let us do all of the work and then just poach at the end. It's much more efficient for them.

Not saying this is it - but ~ collusion among several teams to go after Clemson
Dec 3, 2024, 7:58 PM
|
|
- - - makes Clemson (or any other single school which must withstand a collusion among several other schools pursuing that single school’s recruits) disproportionately vulnerable to having Dabo’s verbal recruits being ‘poached.’
(Note: Formal ‘collusion’ by competing schools against Clemson is not necessary to create circumstances which makes Clemson especially vulnerable to ‘pack’ poaching of Dabo’s recruits.)
Two examples to clarify the argument.
(1). If Clemson wasn’t an obvious target for not fighting hard enough to keep our recruits from leaving, then one single other competing school would need to have the resources to go toe to toe with Clemson for a Clemson verbal commitment.
(2). On the other hand, if each among numerous other schools were individually targeted one verbal commitment each, then in effect Clemson would have to ante up to pay extra for each verbal commitment in order to keep him in our class. The combined money from each of the other schools (let’s assume each of those other schools … individually … had less NIL funds than Clemson) would significantly exceed lesson’s NIL money.
In the face of numerous less financially underpinned schools each pursuing a Clemson verbal commitment using top dollar to get him, then Clemson would get outbid one at a time for enough verbal commits until the recruiting class shrunk to the point where we could afford to keep every one from that smaller pool of recruits.
If Clemson is perceived as unable or unwilling to ‘pay up and match competitive offers,’ then this is akin to a pack of coyotes preferring to target a crippled deer as the target meal instead of attacking one from among the not-crippled deer.
