Right now MBB has the 5th best record in program history

if you don't count seasons with 15 or less total games back in the 1920's and before.

Top ten seasons by overall record fitting the above qualifications...

1. 15-3 (1934-35) Joe Davis
2. 25-6 (1986-87) Ellis (highest final AP ranking ever)
3. 22-6 (1976-77) Foster
4. 26-9 (1989-90) Ellis
5. Right now, this year. Brown L
6. 23-9 (2008-09) OP
7. 23-9 (1979-80) Foster
8. 25-10 (2017-18) Brown L
9. 17-7 (1951-52) McFadden
10. 24-10 (2007-08) OP

This is not intended to be rhetorical. It's just a fact. Important to note is that arguably one of the best teams of all-time is not listed. #11 was the 1996-97 team under Barnes who went to the Sweet 16 and finished with the 2nd highest AP ranking in the program's history

At a time when the ACC is as bad...

as it has been at any point over the last thirty years.

Based on Clemson SOS ranking, particularly the OOC SOS ranking, coupled with the fact that CBB has acknowledged that this is his best team ever at Clemson, this team should not be a bubble team. They should be a lock for the NCAAT. Yet here we are !!!

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

We are usually worse relative to other teams than we are now***

Where did brownell say it was his best team ever?

We’ve played 14 conference games…

In those 14 games, we’ve played 2 ranked opponents and both of those games were in Littlejohn. Given State plays UNC on Sunday, it’s conceivable we will play a grand total of 3 over a 20 game schedule. These aren’t the days of the double round robin and a Murder’s Row on Tobacco Road - though you wouldn’t know it from our most recent trip to the Triangle.

The non-conference SOS is in the 330s - Division 1 expanded to more than 340 teams in last 20 years.

It’s a comically bad schedule.

This will mean alot more at the end of the year.

Our record right now is great, but the trend is looking like we may not be in that list by the end of the year. We shall see. Good or bad . . .

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Absolutely. Just weird to see that at this point, it's true.

I would have guessed like 12th or 13th or something. But 5? Clemson basketball has a really bad history for the most part.

we can never be very good here, was there something in those records prior to 1920 that may offer the rest of us hope, though the sample size may be smaller? Would be comforting to know that perhaps we had something going on back then at least that doesn't doom us forever.

Nope. We aren't saying that we can never be good.

But some of us are saying don't think Clemson "should" be better because it is Clemson and in the ACC. None of the historic success of football carries over to basketball.

Wow, that definitely proves that simply comparing wins and losses throughout history doesn’t really tell the whole story!

Yeah, but it's totally irrelevant. The ACC this year is the

worst I've ever seen it, and I'm 65. When UNC & Duke are not Top 5-10 teams, that tells you everything. Have we even played a Top 25 team yet? Miami, I guess. But back in the day, we would've already played a half dozen ranked teams by now, and a couple of elite teams. And you had to play every team twice, home and away. That's why our SOS is so bad now.

Brownelling predates Brownell.

E.g., Under Barnes, 1996-97 team started 16-1 and were ranked #2 in the AP (pretty sure that is the highest Clemson was ever ranked in the basketball) based on being 5-0 in the ACC having beaten #25 at UVA, #10 Duke, #11 at Maryland, plus NCSU and at FSU. The one loss was a 10-point drop to #24 Minnesota on a neutral floor.

Then they lost 7 of the next 12 (and 3 of the last 4) to finish 21-8 and 9-7 (good for 4th) in the ACC.

Then lost in first round of the ACCT.

But did actually advance to NCAA Tournament and won two games. Then lost to the same Big 10 team (Minnesota) to they lost to early in the season.

Finished at AP #14.

Season's got a few more games. Still time to finish 10-10 in the ACC and 18-13 overall.

But that’s not going to happen, is it?***

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

Coincidentally only the 51-52 team has a lower ranked SOS per Sports Reference.
