I was granted in-state tuition at Arizona State

Apr 3, 2013, 10:04 AM

my freshman year of school, and it was $2,200 a year. When I transferred back home to Clemson, in-state tuition was approaching $12,000. Now it's over 13k.

Additionally, my wife went to school in NC, and in-state for her was around 3k.

Clemson's tuition is out of hand, in-state or out-of-state.

Look at how the State of South Carolina supports it's "STATE" schools and you will see why tution has gone up.

and BTW. Clemson's budget now sees less than 9% funding from the State

Apr 3, 2013, 10:37 AM

They jack the base price up real high then when you get lottery money or other financial aid it looks like you got a much better deal than you really did.

A tip that saved me a lot of money - each semester go back to financial aid and ask if they have any funds - could be from someone who lost a scholarship, could be because you are left handed what ever. If you are involved on campus and have a 3.5 they usually can find some money.

I think the problem also is with the institution and what they charge (regardless of the combination of tuition/tax payer funding) for an education.

Apr 3, 2013, 10:44 AM [ in reply to It is because Higher Education in SC is not a priority ]

not just a SC problem.

The answer is real simple. Easy, no limit, low interest student loans. You know, like the housing market several years back.

States can pull back their funding because they can.
Free money also isolates the universities from free market forces such as reasonable salaries and competition.

Until we learn our lesson as a country about giving away money, this is the road we will travel.

There is a dead end ahead though. So there's that.

Out-of-state isn't an issue.

Apr 3, 2013, 10:54 AM

Public schools should be able to charge whatever they like for out-of-state residents.

What's strange is that the out-of-state expenses for UGA, Auburn, and Alabama are a lot higher than Clemson's, but Clemson's in-state costs are a lot higher than those schools'.

Basically, the state of SC has no idea what its doing with higher education.

Re: Out-of-state isn't an issue.

Apr 3, 2013, 11:02 AM

It does seem Clemson is trying to attract out of state students.

My point is the cost of a year's tuition, in-state or out-of-state is ridiculous.

These schools could be charging what they are charging if people could not pay the price. The only way most can is through loans.

The other part is the insane cultural expectation that everyone should go to college.

The cheap financing plus the inflated demand has led to ridiculous tuition increases.

It's not sustainable. At some point society will collectively realize it's stupid to go $150,000 in debt for path of study you chose when you were 17 years old and which secures you a job paying $30,000 a year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Apr 3, 2013, 11:35 AM

It's the same thought process that goes behind the minimum wage issue.

I don't see how people fail to realize how we are not only driving up the cost of a degree while at the same time making the degree less valuable.
