Went back and watched the 2008 Clemson/Bama

game, and turned it off at the 9:22 mark in the first qtr. Right after, true freshman Jamie Harper, fumbled on the first offensive play of the game for Clemson. Mind you, this was a backfield that had Spiller and Davis, and Bowden thought it would be cute to run the true freshman. The frustrations of 2008 just came back to me, so I turned it off. I am so glad we are nothing close to that 2008 team today. Some great players from that team, but man did the coaching suck.

one of Bowden's recruiting ploys was to tell a kid he'd start his very 1st freshman game if he signed with Clemson.....this particular instance backfired and the lost momentum was never recovered in the blowout.

Moral of the Story: Don't promise recruits the first touch

of the first game of their college career. Especially that deep in your own territory.
That was a painful game to watch

I saw the lack of respect for bama before that game.

I kept hearing how they were 6-6 the year before. But I thought " but they're Alabama ! They have talent and a good coach! " Bowden! How do you let Alabama sneek up on you. I feared what would happen in that game and it did. We're light years from that now. GO TIGERS!!!

Wasn't that the team where the OL would line up one the goal

in a 2pt stance? That was the worse scheme ever, couldn't get two feet to save their lives if it weren't for outstanding RB play.

This is all I remember about that game. I was a junior at Clemson then and I could not understand why in World we would hand it off to this guy when we had greatness in our backfield. Then I learned of the recruiting plou mentioned above and still made no sense it's a slap in the face to CJ and James.

Bowden did have a history of doing this. I remember the 2006 SC Game when he pulled Reggie Merriweather in the 4th quarter for James Davis. Merriweather had been pounding the ball and was pulled and replaced by Davis who did nothing with his next 4 carries. A sack on Proctor occurred shortly thereafter and put us out of FG range and cost us the game
I became a huge fan of Davis and Spiller, but always scratched my head at the play calling.
On a side note speaking of Merriweather, every time I see Wayne Gallman run the football, I am reminded of many years watching Reggie play.
Go tigers, beat the Tide!!!

Yep! Was at that game. Reggie was a senior and was gashing them. No chance the coots could stop him. Crowd chanting his name on the drive. Bowden took him out. Awful decision. I was ready for Bowden to leave after that. Watched Reggie throughout high school. He was a train too. Bowden didn't know what he had! That loss to the coots falls directly on Bowden to this day!

The thing that I remember about that Bama game was Chicken Bowden's pre-game interview . He was asked what his confidence level was by the sports chick and he said " about 60% " . That almost made me puke . We were beaten before kickoff .

You really should like yourself more than put yourself through that. If I had to watch that game again, I might hurt myself. It was so bad my son left at halftime and I found him drunk in Buckhead in a bar. But CJ did take one to the house!

I think about that game constantly - and to Bowden's credit...

...I never got the feeling that he believed in the #9 ranking because he constantly cautioned everyone about the OL issues. Yeah we had playmakers, but Bowden himself said that the offensive line performance would determine the season.
The Harper fumble was stupid. A ridiculous thing to promise a young kid.
I remember that game because it was the first step that began Saban's Alabama dynasty. They headed one direction and we headed the other. I look at those preseason rankings and remember the hype going into the game and wonder what might have been had the game itself gone differently. Clearly we're better off now, but I remember how I felt going into that season and I really thought that the program was ready to take over as a perennial power. Apparently, I was naive and some changes were needed first.
