I went into ATT Friday telling myself I was going to get the cheapest phone possible and get out of there. I'm tired of big bills, and since I don't rent like Ineligible user® I actually care about the stuff I have.
So I do. I get the cheapest phone possible. The Galaxy S24. Not plus not ultra. Just the 24.
And two smart watches.

Just think, if you were still single you probably would not have been fussed at as recently as you have been and could probably be hunting right now.

why be tied to a 20k furnace/AC unit or 15k roof?
I would pay rent and just save as much as possible for retirement and not worry one moment about asspensive repairs and mowing grass and etc..

With houses as expensive as they were at the beach when I lived out there

(and they haven't gone down any) there was no way I could have afforded to buy there for the time I did for what I paid. And in that 18 months, I spent exactly zero dollars on home repair, and don't recall an electric bill over $150.
Living at the beach was one of the best things I ever did, and I'd do it again if I could afford it. I'd even live in that exact same house again (I mean if it didn't cost $5500/month like it does now)
It would make going to the Dinghy to see a band a lot easier than it was when I went last night, that's for sure. I used to just walk up there when I lived out there.

I HATE Verizon for one main reason. They force you to be "in debt"

when you buy a phone (not sure if ATT does this or not). They give you this great deal on a trade in, like $800 towards a new $1200 phone. Ok....so that's only $400 for a top of the line phone, great. WELL, in the fine print, Verizon informs you this "deal" is only good if you finance the phone into your bill, at 0%. Ok, fine, I'll pay a few months financing it on my bill, THEN pay it off. NOPE. If you pay partially, your original trade-in deal is off, and you pay the full $1200, or the remaining balance until $1200.
They do this to keep you on their service for the period of the phone payoff. You leave, you owe the full $1200.

a charge for buying a phone over some stoopid monthly plan. I always just buy something that works from ebay or Amazon and switch the sim card over.

Than with the "deal". Stay with them and the phone is $400. You can't buy the same phone for $400 unlocked, new. I will price it again whenever I upgrade again. Got this phone during the covid "lock down".

No company "forces you" to be in debt.

I've never had a phone financed through a carrier; and had Verizon service for years before I went to their lower tier of customer service at Visible for half the service cost.
Since I had to start paying for my phone back in 2010 or so (when work stopped furnishing the phone), I've just bought my own phone and had Verizon for the service. I bounced around with Sprint for a few years when they had "free" service (Taxes only). I think I actually bought my Iphone 15 last year through Verizon and used the monthly service.
