Whether by design or happenstance, Clemson’s next baseball recruiting class – its first complete class under the direction of recruiting coordinator Bradley LeCroy - will have a strong local and regional flavor.

Of the 14 rising high school seniors currently committed to Clemson’s 2012 recruiting class, all but two come from the fertile baseball grounds of Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina.

The 2012 class, which can make commitments official during the November signing period this fall, has been more than a year in the making. And like every recruiting cycle in college baseball, Jack Leggett and his staff will likely be re-recruiting some of their signees at this time next year, fending off the whims and deep pockets of Major League Baseball.

Since last summer, the Tigers have had commitments from three players – lefthanded pitcher Matthew Crownover from Ringgold, GA, who committed as a 16-year-old; Maleek Gibson, an outfielder from Sumter, SC; and Andrew Cox, an outfielder from Belton, SC.

They picked up their latest commitment last week when Zack Erwin, a 6-foot-5 lefthanded pitcher from Duluth, GA, committed, joining his Brookwood High School and Team Gwinnett teammate Lucas Sims, a pitcher/infielder who committed to the Tigers earlier this summer.

Clemson has again mined the suburban Atlanta area heavily, and stayed close to home in nabbing three players from the Charlotte, NC area – one a former teammate and understudy to Richie Shaffer, and all teammates for the South Charlotte Panthers summer league team.

The group of 14 includes five players each from South Carolina and Georgia, two from North Carolina, and one each from Virginia and New Jersey.

Clemson’s New Jersey signee is Kevin Bradley, an infielder-catcher from Pennington who is the son of Princeton head coach Scott Bradley.

Following is a look at the players who will make up Clemson’s 2012 baseball recruiting class:

Kevin Bradley: An infielder-catcher from Pennington, NJ, Bradley is a three-year starter at Hopewell High School. The switch-hitter batted .446 with seven homers and led his conference in RBIs last season. He’s the son of Princeton head coach Scott Bradley.

Jackson Campana: A 6-foot-6, 220-pound third baseman/catcher from Charlotte, NC, Campana is a former teammate of Clemson rising junior Richie Shaffer at Providence High. He hit eight home runs in both his sophomore and junior seasons.

Andrew Cox: An outfielder from Belton, SC, Cox originally committed to South Carolina despite having grown up as a Clemson fan. He changed his mind last summer after his older brother, Jay, made the Tigers’ roster as a walk-on transfer and he began attending games at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. His father, Jimmy, was a kicker on the Clemson football team in 1979 and 1980. Cox is a two-time all-region choice.

Matthew Crownover: A lefthanded pitcher from Ringgold, GA, as a 16-year-old Crownover was rated as the No. 1 lefthanded pitcher, and the No. 12 player overall, in the class of 2012 by Perfect Game. He chose Clemson over Georgia Tech, LSU and Tennessee, and was honored as a 2011 first-team All-American by Perfect Game.

Steven Duggar: An outfielder from Moore, SC, Duggar is the teammate of incoming Clemson freshman Daniel Gossett. He earned 4-A all-state honors last season.

Zack Erwin: A 6-foot-5 lefthanded pitcher from Duluth, GA, Erwin was 7-4 with a 3.09 ERA and 68 strikeouts in 65 innings last season. He chose Clemson over Georgia Tech and Mississippi State, among others. Erwin is currently playing in the East Coast Pro Showcase in Florida.

Maleek Gibson: An outfielder from Lakewood High in Sumter, SC, Gibson is a lefthanded batter who has been committed to the Tigers for more than a year.

Billy Koerner: A righthanded pitcher from Concord, NC, Koerner earned all-state honors at J.M. Robinson High after going 6-3 with a 1.51 ERA. He pitched eight complete games and struck out 151 batters, and was honored as South Peidmont Conference pitcher of the year. He has a fastball in the low-90s, as well as an effective change-up and curveball, in his pitching arsenal. He went 10-2 last year for the South Charlotte Panthers.

Tyler Krieger: An infielder from Johns Creek, GA, he plays at Northview High, where he was a teammate of current Tiger Matt Campbell. He batted .375 in 2010 and earned second-team all-region honors.

Matthew Reed: A catcher from Woodgrove High School in Purcellville, VA, Reed plays for the Hurricanes Baseball Club.

Clate Schmidt: A righthanded pitcher/shortstop from Allatoona High in Acworth, GA, Schmidt posted a 1.09 ERA last season and led Cobb County in strikeouts with 97. He throws in the low-to-mid 90s.

Lucas Sims: A pitcher/shortstop/outfielder from Lawrenceville, GA, Sims is a teammate of Zach Erwin’s at Brookwood High and Team Gwinnett. The righthander throws in the low-90s, according to Perfect Game, which named him to its 2011 All-America first team.

Wales Toney: A 6-foot-3 righthanded pitcher from T.L. Hanna High in Anderson, SC, Toney is a teammate of incoming Clemson freshman Garrett Boulware. He throws in the low-90s.

Kyle Whitman: A 6-foot-3, 210-pound infielder/pitcher from Nation’s Ford High in Fort Mill, SC, Whitman is a lefthanded batter and a teammate of Jackson Campana and Brody Koerner for the South Charlotte Panthers.

The article doesn't say how good these players are or

if their states had better players that went elsewhere to play.

Re: Let's Hope They Have Great Fundamentas When They Arrive

Jun 4, 2012, 10:08 PM

Agree, class looks great and hopefully will provide a much needed infusion of talent. And let's hope Jack can do something with them. But don't forget we had all the talent in the world in the past and Jack still couldn't win the big one. I am still concerned about our continued lack of fundamentals like being able to lay down a bunt and so forth. So let's wait and see how it plays out before we too puffed up about this class.

Re: well well well

Jun 4, 2012, 11:39 PM

The issue hasnt been recruiting.

We have shown time and time that we have the talent to play with most everyone. What we have also shown time and time again is that we are not well coached and struggle with the small things. The fundamental plays that separate Elite/Great from Good.

The plays such as being able to properly get down a sacrifice bunt in a tight game.

The small things are the difference in between this...

Photobucket

and something that looks better than that.

39% against top 25 competition is not due to talent as much as it is due to not doing the small things correct.
