Spurrier on Dabo and Clemson: "They have something really special going"
Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney and former Florida and South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier are good friends, but that didn’t stop them from trading barbs when Spurrier was with the Gamecocks. Spurrier admitted Thursday that he thinks Swinney is one of the nation’s best coaches, but couldn’t believe Swinney would put pressure on his team like he did with his famous “They’re not Clemson” rant in 2011. he's right. Spurlid always has been an egotistical jack-ass, and I have no reason to think he's any different now. Having said that, lot of the conflict between he and Dabo was overblown and media/fan board driven. He was also a dang good football coach when he was focused and hungry.

Yeah, I agree. Now that the garnet is gone off his clothing, I can see why everyone liked him so much.

That is what we're hoping for, isn't it!!! I'm 100% sure that Tiger Nation hopes that Spurrier's comments, will make the blood that runs through coot nation veins boil. The best coach they've every had in the history of coot FB with Spurrier winning more game than any coach ever that has coached in cootlumbia. Now Spurrier is complimenting their most hated rival coach in Dabo, by saying what a great FB program Dabo has built at Clemson, and saying that Dabo was one of the best top 4 coaches in college FB by comparing Dabo to Saban, Myer, and Fisher!!! Spurrier has the best record ever in coot nation FB history, and they absolutely hate him. That should forewarn any top FB coach that a stint in cootlumbia would end with them hating him!!!

Spurrier Spouting Again
Aug 25, 2017, 10:46 AM
|
|
Spurrier's memory of his and Dabo's interchanges publicly is dubious, maybe disengenuous. Obviously the rivalry drove most of the verbal taunts, fueled further by the winning streak. Almost every occasion it was Dabo that was the one to disengage gracefully.
I do appreciate his praise of the Tigers now. They are special that even he has to admit it. He sure would never have said that as a gamecock. As acoach, he's earned a certain amount of respect. As a man, much less imo.

The thing that has been consistent with Spurrier is that he tells it like he sees it and he competes...he will let you know he owns Tenn or Clemson but he will also let you know when you own him.. he has always told it like it was..

Bottom line, Spurrier is and will always be a Gator. He wanted to coach still, and he got the Augusta membership, so he took on the USuC challenge...I don't think he has any long lasting dedication or loyalty to the #####. And clearly he recognizes quality and success, and has no problem voicing it.

How funny is it that two of the four schools he mentions

as doing great are arch-rivals of his former employers?
Man he drove me nuts when he was coaching at SC. More than any coach I can remember. Maybe because he had that streak against us, and maybe also (as he aluded to) because it was a bit inexplicable. But now that he's left SC and it's clear that he and Dabo got along just fine, I find my animosity is pretty-much gone.

I absolutely could not stand the guy back in those years when they were beating us all the time. I started coming around when steven a smith was saying "alabama lost the game, clemson didnt win it" on first take while suprrier was on the show and spurrier was sticking up for Clemson the whole time.

I have to disagree with Spurrier on dabo's 2011 comment
Aug 25, 2017, 1:50 PM

Or "rant" i guess you could say. You have tp remember we started out that season beat Aub, FSU and VT all in 3 weeks. We also got to 8-0 and started think this could be the team that brings us back to the championship. But instead we lost 3 of our last 4 regular season games and i believe our team really needed something to spark them up which imo, the video on YT that was put out got our players fired up. Ill never forget after my dad (he played football in college) watched the video of what dabo said, he told me "they're going to go out there and beat VT by at least 3 TD's. When a coach sticks up for his football program and players like that, they will go out there and play harder than they have all season". And he was exactly right, we beat VT 38-10 that night.

to the media for the benefit of the rivalry. I think Spurrier made Dabo a better coach.
