Wondering why someone like Flagg

would even go pro and subject his body to an NBA schedule with a loser. He will probably make how many millions at Duke, be the big man on campus, and even walk out with a Duke degree and the full college experience.
Discuss.

Flagg will make $12M+ per year on his rookie deal. Once he gets to his second deal, he will make about $40M per year.
His goal is to get to that second contract as fast as possible. Staying at Duke delays that.

I read somewhere Flagg could make 20 million next year at dook with endorsements and his dook salary. No idea if that’s true of course. But if that’s true I would take another year of “college” life vs the NBA grind.

I doubt that $20 million is a real number, but if it were staying in college an extra year make a lot of sense from a conservative perspective, but athletes bet on themselves and never consider the downside.
Having said that, college players who think they are going to be NBA superstars are trying to get to the second contract as quickly as they can to make $50 million per year.

I don't believe a single "report" about NIL and endorsements. It's all speculative hogwash.

He made $4.8 mil this year. Doubling that is achievable. $20 mil…no way.

I agree that 20 million seems crazy but think about what Flagg could get in endorsements next year. He would be the most hyped college player ever. With that said I hope he leaves.

The ACC as a whole needs a lot more players like Flagg. Maybe then we could get more than 1 team into the Sweet 16.

Fast track to a potential supermax would make the most financial sense for a player like Flagg

Um, so what. Makes the same at Duke, and everything I posted stays as is. Can't beat it. Besides, what's really the difference between 10 mil and 40 mil if you're grinding down your body with a loser. Better to have your college experience and walk out a graduate. And then, still, to the NBA after that.

I'm sorry if you can't understand the difference in $10M and $40M.
And again, it's about getting to the maximum deal as soon as possible. Staying at Duke one more year versus going to the NBA would result in approximately a $30M loss for Flagg in year 5.

It's the lure of big money, more than what he would get in college. I probably would go to the NBA myself in his shoes. I will say this, I wouldn't want to go to a loser team, and with his talent he could probably say he wasn't playing for such and such team whether they draft him or not.
If a team he doesn't want drafts him he could stay at Duke and get millions there and hold out for what he wants. That's probably what I'd do, but I have no talent so it's a moot point as far as I go...

Because he probably wants to start working himself to the 500plus million dollar contract he will eventually get if he lives up to potential.

A top of the ladder guy like Flagg will make multiples of what Duke can offer. His rookie contract will be worth roughly $55 million with $25+ guaranteed. But that’ll be the tip of the iceberg. He’s probably be looking at endorsement north of $100 million. For basketball, college money will be most enticing for 2nd rounders on down where nothing is guaranteed. In the NFL you’ll start seeing guys with 3rd round+ projections coming back more frequently. Except for someone who genuinely has a chance to move into a high first round pick, which will only be a handful of positions in specific years, anyone with a firm 1st or 2nd round grade should go. If college football starts putting up enough money to interfere with these picks, I would expect the NFL to take a much more confrontational approach to its relationship with college football.

He can get all that and then some after being at Duke four years also. Money NOW isn't everything in life, except to agent types such as yourself (by your post, you sound like this).

I wish it wasn't so, but that ship has sailed. A talent like Flagg will never stay 4 years anymore. I hoped with NIL maybe it would change, but I don't see it.

I’m talking about “money now”. He absolutely will not get $100 million endorsement contract at Duke. I hate the modern NBA but it is an international brand in a way college basketball is not. The money - now - will be dramatically better in the NBA.

An athlete with #1 draft pick talent is never making it to year four (or year two in this case).
He could have a career ending injury at any moment. No need for him to waste time getting to the NBA and delaying that potential supermax contract that would set his grand children up with wealth.
This whole "college experience" thing people keep saying he needs is wasted breath. Top level student athletes aren't getting that.

Do you understand just how much money he will make? We are talking insane money that is reserved even for a select group of pro athletes....not just a pro contract. He is a #1 pick superstar and while that doesn't guarantee his future success, it does still come with a boatload of money that will change the course of his life and future generations.
He doesn't need a college degree to move to the next phase of his life successfully as he is going pro in basketball. I'm sure he could benefit from a Duke business school education and is still very young but he will be getting money that just doesn't happen through any other platform at Duke.

I don't disagree, but man, I still don't get paid endorsements. I don't care if it is Trevor, I'm not buying a product just because he recites a ###### about it for $$$. Will never understand that. I guess I should have majored in advertising.

he will get the same and better endorsements as a pro and if he stays healthy he will make insane $$$ down the road. He is the best talent in college bball this year and the degree really won't do squat for his future earnings. Sure, it would be great to have but he'll be fine.

It's not even a question.
Plus, I'm sure playing in the NBA is his lifelong dream. It's not worth risking a career ending injury in college. Go pro now while you can.

What does he make at Duke? Is it guaranteed? Are NBA contracts guaranteed?

But - yeah - if I'm getting paid millions to play in college, I'd probably stay there.

Yes, his NBA rookie contract would be guaranteed for at least 2 years at about $12-13M per year.
Nobody knows if his college NIL deal is guaranteed, or what stipulations are included.
If he remains one of the best players in the NBA, as is expected, he will eventually be making over $50M a year. Every season he stays at Duke delays his ability to make that $50M salary by another year (it's based on tenure).
