OC hire HAS to be an outside hire

Dec 8, 2021, 5:30 PM

We need some new ideas on the offensive side of the ball. Im not saying a complete overhaul is needed, but we need some new wrinkles. Hiring within is accepting the status quo. Defense isn't broke so no real need to fix it. Offense is stale and predictable and could really use some innovation.

So because OP stated his opinion on the state of our offense, and where he thought the hire should come from - it’s a “moronic” post????? SMH

I disagree and my reason is simple. This offense didn't just stop performing, it changed its parts. We need better line play and better play from the recievers, we did not improve much because of all the injuries. If you disagree with the injury and consistency view, we will just have to disagree.I do think we need to get a younger line coach though, and I think Young will be that man.JMO.

Yeah I don't get the injuries excuse at all. Injuries had nothing to do with our ineptness on offense. We got better late in the season and that was when we were so injured that Will Swinney was starting.

The less we relied on DJ to do anything other than hand off the ball the better we looked. Luckily we were playing teams that we could run every down and still be successful.

I agree completely

But many on TNet offer simplistic answers (complaints) to complex problems (and we had MANY problems this year - many of them out of anyone's direct control).

Some people are just on a witch hunt.

Good companies and businesses develop personnel and promote from within. Without that incentive, there is no motivation and desire to learn and improve.

I'm guessing, depending on your work status, that it would be ok with you to be bypassed for a promotion from some outside person, even if you were ready to move up.

If no one is ready to move up, that's a different story.

I didn’t realize this was a mom and pop company running on a seniority system. If you think Dabo Swinney is happy about an offense that embarrassed him and the fans as bad as this one did you haven’t payed attention to him. He is a fiery competitor that needs to prove people wrong. And people say he has cycled out and his time at the top is over. He will be ###### before he lets that happen. And running the same offense with an assistant coach and running DJ out there to humiliate him would not be very Dabo. But think what you want.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This thinking is how we got behind this season

Dec 9, 2021, 1:04 AM

Loss scholarship players
Don’t use the portal
Give all those extra schollies to walkons
Just handle everything internally

If our offense sucked with TE and his archaic schemes (quote from other sources) why would we promote from within?

Principles are priciples whether it's fortune 500 or Mom and pop!
Dabo embarrassed,I dont think He was happy with some of the results but He was not embarrassed by this team or the coaches! If you could not tell that then you were the one not watching!
This year may have been the best coaching job ever! So many obstacles to come and they never quit and they got better and are playing their best ball now!
I not it makes you feel better to win by 50 and win the Natty so you can say we dominate. Fact is you are not on the team!

Was there a problem last year when we finished 10th in

Dec 8, 2021, 6:17 PM

total offense and 6th in passing offense, with the best passing offense (ypg) in Clemson history?

The last 3 years we were 4th, 4th, and 3rd in scoring offense, and we finished ranked #1, #2, and #4. The current playcaller has healed lead us to the best run in Clemson program history. This year was an anomaly, for obvious reasons.

There's nothing wrong with our offense, and we add new "wrinkles" every game as needed.

You just want a new offense.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I completely agree.

Dec 8, 2021, 7:05 PM

I don't see anyone on the current staff who is ready to take over the Offense. And from time to time you need to change things up. This comparing this to running a company is a weak comparison. Totally different animal when it comes to college sports. The offense slipped last season and crashed this season. Yes we've had new players and a ton of injuries. But come on....three points against Bama? Actually negative 4. And 14 points against Georgia Tech? Yes the offense did get better in the run game, but that's about it. The QB play and WR play just wasn't there this year. Not saying they should have been lighting up the scoreboard, but the dropped passes and overthrown balls is the worse I've seen in 40+ years of watching Clemson football. Only our elite defense keep us in games.

Re: I completely agree.

Dec 8, 2021, 9:21 PM

"I don't see anyone on the current staff who is ready to take over the Offense"
Wouldn't the Head Coach be in the best position to determine if someone on staff was ready for an OC position? So far during his tenure Dabo has fired, Dabo has hired, and Dabo has promoted. The results have been pretty good from my admittedly jaundiced view. I think I'll trust him to run things.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well, Dabo probably isn’t asking him his opinion, but it is

Dec 8, 2021, 8:02 PM

They are all to ignorant to understand how vanilla and predictable our offense has been for years now. Or understand that it worked somewhat prior to this year because the offense was littered with first round talent. Or that the ACC has been utterly and completely inept from a competition standpoint. No none of that is relevant and your sir, should never have an opinion on a message board!!!!!

Re: OC hire HAS to be an outside hire

Dec 9, 2021, 12:32 PM

I agree, one of my main criticisms of Elliot and All the current staff was and is preseason evals. Never mind play calling or limiting the scope based on injuries etc. or the inability to use concepts like Bama’ did against UGA by using tempo to the edges initially to tire them out and stretch the box and then go to the middle when they saw them working too hard to get back to the line….I’m saying how did they not see DJ could not read and react to a defense and how did they not see he could not use his checkdowns and watch coverage change? Why were they caught off guard in the first game of the season when we literally could not do a single thing on offense, at all?
