Weekly Recruiting Update- News and Notes

Dec 7, 2015, 10:51 AM

Here's a cool factoid for you- Former Clemson LB Stephone Anthony became the first player in NFL history to return a blocked PAT for a two point score in Sundays game vs. the Panthers. Anthony also forced a fumble and returned it for a score. Soon, the NFL will announce a new bridge program called Clemson University. More on our Tigers in the league below...

Clemson RB commit Tavien Feaster was named Mr. Football SC last Friday. He is the first Clemson football commit to win the award since Roscoe Crosby in 2000.

There are 57 days til National Signing Day!! Or as I like to call it, Christmas. <img

WR recruit Diondre Overton showed a crowd of over 5,000 onlookers why he is so heavily regarded last Friday night. The senior did just about everything for Page High as they went on the road to beat an undefeated Middle Creek squad 49-23. Overton had 3 interceptions on defense while catching 5 passes for 54 yards and a TD. Page (13-2) now faces Mallard Creek in Raleigh on Saturday for the 4AA state title.

One could certainly find this interesting, "The Clemson-bound Overton picked off a second-down pass at the 8 and returned it to the 5." This comes from an article by Tom Shanahan at Greensboro.com.

247sports has announced that ATH Bryan Edwards of Conway, SC will receive a visit today from SC coach Will Muschamp.

Stud DL prospect Dexter Lawrence is still scheduled to announce on December 14th and Clemson is heavily in the mix for his services. He visited Alabama last weekend and will see NC State this weekend.

Clemson WR commit Cornell Powell and the Rose High Rampants are also moving onto a state title game after their 28-14 win over New Hanover. Powell and crew were up 21-7 at the half but the Wildcats, winners of ten straight, bounced back to cut it to a one score game. The Wildcats were surging late in the game to tie but a sack on 4th and 11 ended the drive. Later Powell took a 34-yard jet sweep around the edge to put the game in check. He also scored on a 62-yard catch. Rose High faces Charlotte Catholic on Saturday at Wake Forest for the 4A title.
Film of the game-

4* OL John Simpson and Fort Dorchester scored with 42 seconds remaining to defeat Goose Creek and move onto the state title game. Simpson mentioned that both Clemson and Florida will receive an official visit at some time. LSU will visit him on Friday.

2018 QB prospect Dakereon Joyner, also from Fort Dorchester, is one to keep an eye on and Clemson appears to be high on his list. Going into the game, Joyner has 2,689 yards passing and 26 touchdowns to go with 882 yards rushing and 16 scores this season.

Apparently targeting can only be called on Clemson in the state of North Carolina. With that said, lets have a quick glance at some linebacker recruiting...

Highly touted LB Rahshaun Smith did not make a trip to Maryland this weekend because he was taking the SAT. The 4* prospect is still scheduled to visit Clemson on the 12th and will announce on January 2nd at the Under Armour All-American game. It would appear that Smith will be a Clemson Tiger next year.

4* LB Justin Foster and Crest High will be playing for a state title too. The junior has been selected to participate in the US Army All-American game and Clemson was the first to offer him. The 4th ranked OLB has a sister at Clemson now and has visited here several times.

2018 LB prospect Dax Hollifield and Shelby High will play for a state title on Saturday as well. Clemson was the first to offer the 6-1 220 pounder and he's been a familiar face on campus. He said of Clemson's gameday atmosphere- “There were a million people. It was — I don’t know how to explain it, it was the biggest sport I’ve been to. They said there were 100,000 people there, it was so loud. It was so crazy. It was nice. I liked it a lot.” 247sports rates him as the #2 ILB in the nation.

Florida and Georgia recruiting updates will come out later this week as I'm trying to shorten these post. I'll also try and get some year end stats for our commits.

Former Clemson DB prospect Myles Dorn recently committed to North Carolina.

2017 DE Malik Herring had some skeptical things to say about UGA after the firing of coach Mark Richt but is now optimistic about the Bulldogs outlook under Kirby Smart.

North Carolina was offsides and so was Rudy...moving on...

South Carolina RB commit CJ Freeman visited Louisville this past weekend and Wisconsin two weeks ago. He'll visit USCjr this weekend and calls his commitment status, "soft." The Gamecocks DE commit Jordan Smith visited Tennessee this past weekend.

One player that our Tigers really miss this year is special teams guru Bradley Pinion who was drafted by the 49ers. Yesterday Pinion had another monster day and averaged 48.1 yards on 9 punts with a long of 62. Over 30% of his punts have pinned the opposition back inside their own 20 yard line.

Speaking of Tigers in the NFL, Deandre Hopkins continues to torch the opposition as he recorded 5 catches for 88 yards and a score on Sunday. His Texans team came up short, 30-21, against the Bills and Sammy Watkins who had 3 catches for 109 yards and a TD. Mysteriously, Watkins was not targeted on the Bills last 5 drives though. Through 11 games this year, Hopkins has 81 receptions for 1081 yards and 9 TDs- while Watkins has played 8 games and has 31 catches for 526 yards and 5 TDs.

Not to be overlooked is the play of former Clemson WR Martavis Bryant who caught 4 passes for 114 yards and a TD in Pittsburghs 45-10 victory over Indianapolis on Sunday. Charlie Whitehurst saw limited action in the game for the Colts going 4 of 8 for 51 yards. Dwayne Allen also had one catch for six yards in the game.

Now for a look at some of Clemson's defensive players in the league:
Grady Jarrett recorded a sack and 4 tackles for the Falcons,
Byron Maxwell had an INT for the Eagles,
Jarvis Jenkins tallied half a sack for the Bears,
Coty Sensabaugh made 3 tackles for the Titans,
Kourtnei Brown had a tackle for the Buccs,
Andre Branch recorded a tackle for the Jags,
Tony Steward tallied a tackle for the Bills,
Marcus Gilchrist had two tackles for the Jets

I'll leave you with an awesome story on Cornell Powell that I'll post below. With all the coaching shifts lately I'm sure there will be more to hand out later in the week. Til then, have a great day and GO TIGERS!

Rashan Gary.. He's looking at arranging for his final visits and this will be crucial to our chances. If he does visit our chances would seemingly rise. Simple as that. Get him on and show him what "God's country" is all about. He's spoken of returning to the south in January for some more stops so we'll cross our fingers that he'll swing by. Gary has stopped by Clemson before on his quick trip through the south earlier this year. Unfortunately, Dabo was on vacation in Florida during that time but the two were able to communicate via Skype. One really positive thing from that visit; His mother on Coach Swinney- "He's a really nice guy," Coney said. "What I liked about him most of all was that he said I want you to go out there and visit as many schools as you can and get a good feel on them. If you feel Clemson is the place, come back. I've never heard a college coach say that. That was refreshing."

More positives to take from his mother- “I was very impressed with Clemson. For me, I haven’t been to too many schools as of yet,” she said. “Rashan has been to a few other schools with his teammates, so I was in awe. It was a very nice facility. Very good academics in the way that they explain how Rashan would be successful academically – that was the key to my visit. For Rashan, he was going to go to college whether he played football or not. He wants to play football. I want Rashan to go to college and come home with a degree." Additionally, her brother lives in Anderson.

Now, as you probably know, Michigan is the team to beat here. Gary's former coach Chris Partridge is the new director of recruiting operations. Partridge and Rashan's mother have a good relationship and are very familiar with one another. Additionally, two former teammates of Gary's, Jabrill Peppers and Juwann Bushell-Beatty, are also Wolverines. At this point in time I have a hard time believing that he'll go elsewhere but I've been wrong so many times before. Ya never know if the SEC bag-men will show up and honestly Rashan is a recruiting diva. He loves it. Nothing wrong with that. But as of now it appears he'll be a Wolverine with Alabama and Ole Miss all up in his ear.

Tavien Feaster will no enroll early this year. He is attempting to defend his state title in the 100M and 200M dash. One would be hard pressed to find a guy that big and that fast (6-0 200+).

The Roscoe Crosby story is kind of a long one. He went through a lot of stuff and I recall he hurt his elbow and his younger brother drowned. I may not be one to answer this question so heres some better reads-
