Question for basketball aficionados

Assuming all the underclassmen return next year...
C: Ian PF: Godfrey SF: Wiggins SG: Beadle PG: Dillon
It looks like shooting would be an issue. But do we need to go into the portal for starters? And if so, at what position?
Or would we just use the portal for reserve rolls?

Hemenway will be back. When healthy he is a very good shooter. Also, and it probably won't happen, but Chase still has a covid year if he wanted to return.
We have 3 freshmen coming in, 2 of which (guard and forward) are highly rated.
Brownell has been good at finding key transfer additions recently. I suspect this year will be no different. In fact, after our tournament run, he should be able to get interest from some players who previously wouldn't have considered Clemson. I suspect he'll be looking for a center and possibly a true PG.

Jake Heidbreder will be a redshirt junior next year. He averaged 15.1 points per game last year at Air Force and shoots around 40% on threes.
https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/4903264/jake-heidbreder
Alex Hemenway will likely be back. Assuming he stays healthy (a big assumption at this point), he shoots well also. He is a career 43% shooter from three.
https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/stats/_/id/4433001/alex-hemenway
Asa Thomas redshirted this year, so he will be a redshirt freshman next year. He is a wing in the mold of Hunter Tyson. He shot 38% from long distance in high school.
I expect Heidbreder to contend for a starting spot, while Hemenway and Thomas are likely coming off the bench.
Dillon Hunter is working hard on his shot, and I expect it to be better next year but he's unlikely to ever be an elite shooter. He will probably get a large majority of the minutes at PG due to his defense and ball handling.
Freshman Del Jones is likely to get minutes in the backcourt. He's a four star prospect and one of the best PGs in his class. I think he's likely the long-term answer at PG, even if Dillon Hunter is starting in November.
I expect us to be busy in the portal. We will definitely get a big man or two, but I wouldn't be surprised to see us get a guard as well if we see one we really like.
We will lose at least one transfer to the portal, if not more. It's the nature of the beast these days.

JG moves much better and faster, and works much harder to find an opening
he 'creates' much better than Hemenway ever has

I am looking forward to that team with Asa Thomas, Hemenenway, and Heidbreder. Thenyou add those 3 true frosh and seems promising. Do you think we will have room for a portal player in the mix though to get in the rotation with Ian and Godfrey?

It just seems like we wouldn't have a spot for 3 portal guys?
We lose Girard, Hunter, and Hall, right?
Then we have 3 freshman players coming in.
You know the roster and situtions better, so what is the scoop on how it would work? Thank you.

This year's team had 2 consensus 4* players (Hall, C Hunter), plus the 3rd best 3pt shooter in ACC history (JGIII). All the starters except Schiefflin had at least 4 years of experience.
Next year's team will have zero 4* players, and only 1 starter with 4 years of experience (Chef). Transfers might change those; Hemenway has experience if he is able to return. Beadle and Wiggins seem to have lost Brownell's confidence and got few minutes later in the season.
Of the other two players who have redshirted (Thomas, Heidbreder), Heidbreder played 2 years at Air Force and Thomas has not played an NCAA game. Add in the 3 freshman (any one which may be redshirted?) all with zero NCAA experience, obviously.
It will take a lot of work and some luck for them to succeed. I hope they can.

Hemenway should be back due to a medical redshirt. We need a true point guard. The portal is the quickest answer to finding that guy. We’re kinda missing a true point guard this year. Chase Hunter has been more of a liability than not this year. We see what this team looks like when he’s creating offense. We need someone who can do that consistently. If Hunter can continue this run, we can possibly win a couple more.
All that said, I still don’t trust Brownell. His history just isn’t great. I believe he belongs at a school like UNCW. If he can put together 5-6 years of tournament teams and regularly make the round of 32 with occasional elite 8’s and final fours I will get on board. If Gonzaga can make 25 consecutive tournaments why can’t Clemson?! We’re in a much better conference and have more revenue over-all. Building a perennial powerhouse in basketball would push our revenue to unheard of heights.

The alternative seems to be either passive acceptance of not being consistently good, or delusionally believing that not being consistently good is not something we should want--indeed, being sycophantically grateful for any twitch above the norm,
"Thank you sir! May I have another!"
I can at the same time acknowledge that Brownell has been a slightly better than average coach, that he's been given ample opportunities to prove that he can be better than "slightly above average", and ready to take the risk to look for a coach who thinks the team can be even better, despite never having a history of being good.

We got hosed last year. We should have been in the tournament.
We are in the Sweet 16 this year.
Back to back 23 win seasons. Back to back top 5 ACC finishes. There's back to back good seasons right there. And we likely have another really good roster next year that can put us back into the tournament.

"We got hosed last year."
No, we didn't. We earned exactly what we got, and proved the committee was 100% correct.
"We should have been in the tournament."
We should have not lost to Loyola-Chicago, SCAR, BC, Louisville.
Last year was NOT a good year. We played a total of 4 teams that were ranked at the time we played them:
#13 UVA (lost) #23 Miami (lost) #24 Duke (won) #25 Iowa (lost)
And we lost to 4 of the worst team in the NCAA.
A quirk of ACC scheduling game us a lot of games against the dregs of the ACC, and we lost several of those.
This year was a pretty good year, and the NCAAT run unexpectedly good). It would have been a great year, if we had won any 2 of the three losses to Ga Tech, NC State, Notre Dame AND won the opening game in the ACCT (we would have been a 3 or 4 seed with double bye). Brownell's "best team ever" should not have lost all 3 of those games, and should not have gotten blown out by BC in the ACCT.

what do you specifically disagree with because that's mostly facts? I'm blown away with the constant apologizing for last year when most of the folks that are doing it would not accept that kind of equivocation in their own life.
I'm pretty sure you're a teacher. How often do kids' or parents' expectation of grades not match the reality of their work? I'm betting more than infrequently. How often were you actually wrong and changed the grade. I'm betting very infrequently. If you don't change the grade is it good parenting to say, "well that teachers an ### so do everything exactly the same way forever." You can empathize and still tell your child, "no, you didn't make an A. The expectations are tougher than we thought and it's time to work harder."
Neff defended his coach. You weren't supposed to take it literally. They didn't put in the media guide that 2023 was a tourney year. 3 out of over 100 brackets on Bracket Matrix thought we'd slip into the First Four. People who know, knew we weren't getting in. Insisting otherwise is just being willfully ignorant.

What do you disagree with? Which facts are wrong? Certainly my opinion that the year was not good is subjective, but the facts are the facts. We did *NOT* get an NCAAT invite, because the committee felt our season did not warrant one. We proved them right in excruciating fashion.
Our schedule was weak (73rd our OOC schedule was 116th), and too many of our wins came against Quad 3 and Quad 4 teams. But, we didn't earn the NCAAT because we lost far too many Quad 3 and Quad 4 games.

"why can’t Clemson?!"
Since Brownell took over at Clemson, Butler(!) has been to the final 4 twice. Schools that are not traditional powers, like West Virginia, VCU, Wichita State, Oklahoma, SCAR, Oregon, Wisconsin (twice), Loyola-Chicago (Brownell's nemesis from 2022), Texas Tech, Miami, San Diego State, even Florida Atlantic have ALL made a Final Four since Brownell took over at Clemson.
Is it REALLY too much to ask that Clemson at least TRY to be as good--just once--as San Diego State, Florida Atlantic, and Wichita State? Or maybe, just maybe, match the output of some other "football schools" like Wisconsin and Oklahoma?
I'm hoping this is the year that Brownell puts it together and makes Final Four.
But even if he does that, I've got no faith that the future will be different than the past and we will spend the next few years struggling before the next brief blip.

It's funny that he thinks NOT having a football program actually makes it easier to have the money to run an elite basketball program. How did Gonzaga ever get there? Brad's program is being built quite literally off of football's largess. JK lies that basketball is self sufficient. But a simple perusal of publicly available documents shows that basketball has lost money every year since 2019.

Dallas Thomas will be the best player that Brad will coach. College wise and definitely NBA wise.
We need to hit portal for a big rebounding 7 foot center.

You know we are going to lose players who didn't play much and aren't sure they will be starters next year.
That happens every year and I always wonder how much is from the coaches telling the players that their playing time isn't expected to increase.
I'd guess Godfrey/Wiggins/Beadle/Dillon are all at risk of transferring.
I'm hoping that the team adds enough talent to contend for an NCAA berth next year but it's going to be a crap shoot based on freshman and transfers needing to produce.

You forgot about the transfer from Air Force. Averaged over 15 pts a game. Has gotten a lot stronger in the off season l. He might start. . Still think they bring a good lead or point guard and a big guy in portal. Need someone else 6-9 or taller.
The freshmen have talent but probably be role players their first season.

Wiggins and Beadle are likely out the door at season's end. This is Beadle's 3rd year in the program and after building up minutes mid-season has seen a big drop-off down this stretch. An odd stat for him is how well we outscore opponents when he is on the floor (leads team here in + points / minute) despite him not putting up any big stats alongside.
Wiggins has shown flashes of very good but hasn't really found an identity yet, and with the redshirts, freshmen, and Brad's heavy portal activity, likely checks out other opportunities.
Would be great if Chase decides to stick around for another season with Dillon.
I just don't see Hemenway being a factor. D was never a strong suit and we really can't afford to trade that out for his shooting minutes.
Otherwise, shooting talent is largely a big unknown heading into next season. How HS talent and development transfers adapt to ACC play is up in the air.
