Ok, let's catch up on all this realignment talk

76

Jul 31, 2023, 3:55 PM

I thought it was interesting last week at the ACC Kickoff when I was told, "Look for Colorado to join the Big 12 tomorrow and they will be full-time in the 2024 season." When I asked, "Why so fast?" I was told it was so the conferences could have all the pieces in place for the start of the 12-team playoff.

And that's when the big rumors started to fly. Of course, ACC Commish Jim Phillips said and did nothing at the ACC Kickoff to dispel those rumors or make fans/schools feel any better about the direction of the league, so when the rumors began to fly......you get it.

A Florida State 247Sports reporter fanned the flames with his August 15th date and sources saying FSU was "actively looking to get out of the ACC" (August 15th is the date that schools have to inform the ACC they are leaving so they can be out by the end of next June and ostensibly compete next season...and not wait two more years).

Then the B1G rumors started to fly, and my phone almost melted. Now, here is what we know...The guy known as Greg Swaim on Twitter has started some of this, and then someone on a Nebraska board said they had a source, and the rumor was off and running that Clemson, FSU, Oregon, and Washington are headed to the B1G this week. I started getting wild texts and emails last night and from more than one person saying, "NOW ATHLON IS REPORTING IT!!!!"

No, Athlon was merely reporting what was on social media with no info. Nothing new. No original intel. And the local writers here? No one has anything. National writers of note? No one has anything concrete to report. But remember when Texas and OU announced they were headed to the SEC, it caught everyone by surprise. Same with USC and UCLA to B1G. Wouldn't surprise me if the next move is that way as well.

So where does Clemson stand? There is radio silence. All is quiet. No one seems to know anything. And as I understand it, AD Graham Neff has been away from Clemson with his family for some quiet time before the start of the season, not bunkered up with TV executives. That doesn’t mean it’s not happening, just letting you know what I know. Now, I’ve heard that many think that Clemson and FSU are in lockstep on this, and I believe that. When and if a move is made, the two will be together. We just don’t know what that is.

At FSU, the AD came out and said there wasn’t a meeting scheduled, then there was a meeting scheduled, and then we were told it’s been scheduled, except it wasn’t. And my contacts down there seem confused as to what’s next.

At UNC, I’ve talked to several people. I will say this, there is an air of fear in Chapel Hill because if Clemson and FSU leave, no one wants to get left behind. The words coming out of CH are, “The GOR (Grant of Rights) is airtight,” “Only UNC has an invite from the SEC and B1G” and “the SEC has no desire to add either FSU or Clemson” because it already owns those states. I also heard there was a plan that would let the schools push streaming through their own websites and sell ad time, etc., and that would perhaps help make up the lost revenue. That money would not even come close to making it up.

Those types of statements lead me to believe that someone is believing all of this. And a friend at ESPN said they’ve heard that the network is nervous about what Fox can pull off here – maybe even paying a port of the exit fees to add schools to the B1G – a big feather in their cap.

There is indeed a lot of smoke. A lot of it makes sense. And I've said all along I think Clemson has been keeping its options open and will keep its options open. But nobody has anything concrete to report.

But for right now, it all exists in rumors. I will keep digging. Keep searching. But that’s what we know.

Why not, everything that the ACC has done over the past dozen or so years has done nothing but made the ACC a weaker conference, and merging with SoCon would fit what they've done with the ACC to now!!!

Thank you David.

Even if someone breaks the GOR they can probably stay tied up in court for years and delay paying any fees and fines, allowing the new tv contract money to stockpile in an annuity or something paying dividends and help offset the penalties for leaving. Just a thought. I think FOX will come through and help pay part of the exit fees. Adding SC and FL states plus CA gives them massive national exposure.

My donations are for the editing benefit, and to get away from an absolutely gross amount of advertising. When I first learned about T-Net and become a donating member a couple months after. But there actually wasn't that much advertising that we had to get around way back then.

The cost of being a donating member is way less than one whopper combo meal a month, and a real Tiger fan shouldn't have a problem with paying that cost to stay up with all the news that happens with all of our teams daily throughout the seasons.

IMPO, Tiger Net should give everybody their first 90 days for free with no ads, and if they want to keep reading about the news of our teams as it comes in after their free 90 days, good, become a donating member. If they don't want to be a donating member oh well, but limit what they can see, and with the ads...

The ones that are in the poor house like I am, and only receiving a social security check every month, and if something comes up that may take the little extra you were giving to donate, Crump or B will take care of you as they done for me once, after I explained why I wouldn't have the donation fee for a little while. Those guys actually care about their Tiger Net Tiger fans, and if they didn't, they would have told me that they hope to see me back as a donating member after I got straighten out, but they didn't, they took care of me for a couple of months, and I never lost my R....

Yeah I know they wouldn't. At least there's fear up in CH...i guess that'll have to be enough.

If Clemson and FSU are in lockstep like Hood said, It almost sounds like they are giving them the big F-U though by not including them in the group. Knowing full well UNC is a desirable program.

It'll be fascinating to hear the details on how this all went down if it does indeed come to pass.

It stinks that TV drives this whole conference thing... if the rumors prove true and it's FSU and Clemson to B10, FSU would be the closest drive at 6 hrs 15 min. Next closest is College Park at 8 hrs. 50 min. Other than going to Columbia every other year, that would be the extent of driving to an away game. Additionally, away games will be that much harder to win, as the home team will pack the stadiums. How many games could Tiger fans afford to fly to in a given season?

this rumor mill is pretty much impossible to keep up with... The ACC has really not set forth any initiative to help schools with revenue, just talk of a "bridge the gap" which is basically meaningless and nothingness talk. 3 years removed from a place of prominent power, Clemson top of college football, ACC basketball still the top basketball conference, yet nothing changed or updated....

I appreciate the synopsis of what has happened so far and what you know. Regarding UNC, there is talk of football “brand” and following as the important aspect in this realignment. How many streaming fans can a school bring is very important. Perhaps that is the problem with UNC? Definitely they do in basketball. But football? As an Ohio State fan and alumnus I bring perhaps a different perspective than most. I hope Clemson, FSU, Oregon, Washignton, and, dare i say, ND join the B1G. Add one more ACC team to the mix to make it an even 22. Thats a hell of a conference From Sea to Shining Sea.

I think the B10 would love to add Clemson, FSU, Oregon, and Washington. I doubt that OSU or Mich are that enthused, as at least 3 of those new teams are instantly going to challenge for the 2-team dominance that OSU and Mich have enjoyed for years.

Thanks for the information. The B1G clearly doesn't care about geography. They just want to add he best brand to get viewers. Like adding the California schools. The B1G is wanting to be a "nationwide" league. The SEC may care about already "owning" a state. However, when it comes down to it, do they really want the B1G to plant a flag right down in the middle of their territory and see Ohio State, Michigan and others come down south and play every other week?

best thing for Clemson if they are NOT moving now is radio silence imho. Clemson/FSU would like nothing more than 2 parties interested. If B1G and SEC both want them it makes the movement easier. Things like GOR get worked out in backrooms. It would be interesting to hear the convos in ESPN regarding how losing Clemson and FSU (at bargain basement pricing) to a competitor FOX will impact them and their chosen league the SEC down the road. SEC (Sankey) has to be wondering if it makes more sense to strike first and secure the remaining top FB teams in the area rather than let them escape to the B1G and give the B1G a real foothold in the Southeast.

I still think the ACC should be proactive and not on the defense. Don't wait to be left holding the bag when other conferences act. Search for two more teams with a preference to add more states and spread our viewing area. Don't know who that would be but we have to explore the possibilities. Each school would play 9 conference teams and 3 out of conference. As now the two best would play for the title.
