This is the update I just got from my linemen friend in Asheville.
Went up old fort road where it connects to number 9. Whole area is gone. 100ft ravine where houses used to sit. Kids walking around naked asking where there parents are at. People BEGGING for water. Black hawk helicopters from fema. I don't wanna talk about the smell of the dead bodies. I'm in disbelief

He did say that he saw bodies in the rubble that had been washed into the lake from chimney rock. So this wasn’t a rumor, it was direct from someone who saw them.

On thurs. We knew the water was already at flood levels w 15-20 inches coming. Got to leave on thurs.
But I understand people are stubborn. My mom had a church conference in western NC that started Friday afternoon and she drove up there w a friend on Friday after the storm, I told her she absolutely should not go, and she said “I already spent $500 on this so I’m going”
They got to Hendo and couldn’t go any further, spent 6 hours in traffic just to drive back home. Thank god she didn’t get to the retreat bc she would have been stuck. Dumb dumb dumb mom.

My father wouldn't leave his compound in upper Gville county. He said he had to make sure no one came to raid his home. No one would have raided him, but he sure thought so. They finally drove down here yesterday to get gas and bring me venison meat from the freezer.

in clarity of communication.
"We recommend evacuation" would have been far more effective than, "significant weather event," and, "compared to the floods of 1916." That is, unless they were really just trying to drive the point home with folks who are over 108 years old.

Governor Cooper Declares State of Emergency Ahead of Hurricane Helene
Activates National Guard and Deploys Swift-Water Teams in Advance of Storm
Helene is forecast to cause significant impacts including flash flooding, numerous landslides, damaging debris flows, slope failures across steep terrain, and riverine flooding across portions of western North Carolina and portions of central North Carolina. Flooding may occur in areas that do not typically flood. All North Carolinians should be weather aware and prepared. Tropical storm force winds are possible across western North Carolina late Thursday into Friday. With already saturated soils, trees could fall causing widespread power outages. There is a potential for tornadoes with this storm system. Tornadoes from tropical systems can quickly spin up with little warning."
https://governor.nc.gov/news/press-releases/2024/09/25/governor-cooper-declares-state-emergency-ahead-hurricane-helene
NOAA could not have been more blunt: "Communities need to prepare for catastrophic, life-threatening inland flooding from #Helene, even well after landfall
"The major flood risk includes the urban areas around Tallahassee, metro Atlanta and western North Carolina, including Asheville."
https://www.noaa.gov/news-release/communities-need-to-prepare-for-catastrophic-life-threatening-inland-flooding-from-helene-even-well
This isn't meant to victim-blame in any sense. Just pushing back against the idea that nobody saw this coming.

They didn’t issue a mandatory evacuation because they had the rainfall prediction totally wrong. 4-6 inches total would have sucked, and Biltmore Village would have gotten flooded like it always does, but the area simply would not have been ravaged the way it was. They knew that and the residents knew that, and them not evacuating is no different then a coastal resident not evacuating for a cat one hurricane or tropical storm—-it’s a reasonable calculated risk. People thought they knew what was coming based on inaccurate predictions, period, and by the time it was clear that those predictions were wrong, it was just as dangerous to leave as to stay.

the NC mountain residents should have also.
I don't live where there's really a chance of flooding. If my house ever floods (80' above Lake Keowee level), half Oconee County is dead before me. Still I prepped my property as best I could trying to re-route as much downpour away from my buildings as I could.
If I lived in a valley near a river that has any flood potential I would have scrammed with 15" of rain predicted.
Here's my Wed 10 AM post. 36 hours before Helene got here. https://www.tigernet.com/clemson-forum/message/they-should-rename-this-storm-to-hurricane-john-holmes-35536913#35536913

The bottom line is that even "10-15 inches of rain" doesn't convey impact.

People know that's a lot of rain, but they don't know what that much rain on an area can and will do to rivers/lakes. People are animals of experience, and their experience, and the experience of their forefathers, is that they are high in the mountains, and the idea of a hurricane causing significant flooding issues is an absurd thought. Yes, now, after this, people are going to GTFO, but that's because they now have an experience of what that rain does. We're also talking about people who don't exactly have the means to GTFO on a whim, either. If we're posting on TNET, I bet most to all of us can afford to miss work, get a hotel room for a few days, or have family/kin we can crash. That's not the case for rural Appalachia. So not only is the concept of flooding danger relatively obscure, it certainly does not meet the threshold of financially painful decision-making.
That is why I am not faulting anyone for not evacuating. This isn't Floridiots who refused to leave their newly furnished beachhouse because libs were in cahoots with the Weather Channel to bump up ratings.
Nobody. NOBODY on here foresaw what was going to happen. So let's not play Heidi Hindsight and brush our shoulders off like we are some g/d Nostradamus of precipitation.

You don't live in North Carolina. Neither of which has any bearing on this discussion.
I would bet evacuation was not an option for logistical reasons. Since we're not privy to those conversations all we can do is speculate.
Can you explain what part of "catastrophic, life-threatening inland flooding" was not a sufficient warning of the catastrophic, life-threatening inland flooding people are talking about in this thread?

I would have told my family to pack and we just drive east. Maybe the forecast wasn’t as bad as it got, but it was known that rivers were already at flooding stages w more to come. The extent of the hurricane gusts was somewhat unexpected in western NC but even on Hartwell it was projected 80mph gusts.
People had enough time to evacuate but some didn’t.

Woke up and it had gone well east of Atlanta.
We were out on Pawley's Island and basically had no serious warnings other than some rain. About 3am woke up to a Cat 1 hurricane, tornadoes and water spouts.
Weather service didn't do the best job on this one.

I don't see how that's different....I've talked to over two dozen colleagues / customers from NC and not a single one of them was under the impression anywhere near this bad was going to happen.
I'm pretty against revisionist history when you're staring century level storms and cataclysmic weather events that left people with little to no time to react right down the barrel.
A hurricane hitting Big Bend FL region != noah's ark level flooding + #### failure + floating houses + interstates washing away in North Carolina, 600 miles away.

I am still further confused. Both maps show it was posted on Thursday around the same time.
On says now through Sat...
The other one says Thursday through Saturday.
When did Helene go through Asheville? Wasnt it late Friday?
If the second is the total from Thursday through Saturday, why even show the first one. That is very poorly done as I think I am understanding what yall are saying as i write this.
If my understanding is now correct, the meteorologist presenting that information should be fired for not being able to make things clear.

Storm. It’s the same storm. Their predictions are all over the place (further evidenced in these pics) and they were not saying “ok, storm totals start NOW”. That’s never how it has worked.
Furthermore, they had flood warnings in place that were identical to ones put in place for areas that never flooded. Look at the time stamp on the first true flood evacuation recommendation they issued.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/weather/2024/10/01/three-reasons-why-western-north-carolina-flood-was-so-extreme/
One-two punch of heavy rain The historic deluge began in western North Carolina on Wednesday afternoon into evening, more than 30 hours before the core of Helene came through, because of what’s known as a “predecessor rain event.” That is when moisture streaming hundreds of miles out ahead of the storm interacts with a dip in the jet stream to generate an initial round of heavy rain.

WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner explains why Helene was such a catastrophic storm for western North Carolina.
Gardner, a WRAL meteorologist since 1998, said, in the many years she has tracked hurricanes, she has never seen anything like this in the mountains of North Carolina, even though the area has been hit with tropical systems dozens of times.
Rain totals from Helene were catastrophic:
Busick, near Mount Mitchell in Yancey County, got 30.78 inches of rain Hendersonville, just south of Asheville, got almost 22 inches of rain Boone got almost 18 inches of rain Blowing Rock got 15.45 inches of rain Asheville got 14.31 inches of rain
The devastating flooding across western North Carolina is not solely from Helene, Gardner explained. The storm had a predecessor, or a pre-storm.
How Helene became the near-perfect storm to bring widespread destruction across the South "We had a low to the north [and] we had a cold front coming off that low, and that cold front stalled right there in the mountains," Garner said. "That happened on Wednesday, we watched it happen."
Asheville had already experienced periods of rain on Wednesday, Wednesday night and Thursday before Helene even passed North Carolina.
"I remember looking at how much rain they'd already gotten in Asheville Thursday morning at 9 a.m." Gardner described. "They already had 7 inches of rain. So we just had all this tropical moisture that was coming up and interacting with that stalled front ... it was thousands of miles ahead of Helene."

western NC. Almost no models called for less than a foot of rain. Some called for 20 inches. A local meteorologist on Twitter was sending prayers for NC on Wednesday. And I knew the areas near me would get hammered with 80+ mph winds. It did about as expected as far as I can tell. The rain was what I expected for western NC, but the damage was worse because it's mountains. It's comparable to the 2015 floods, only with massive hills and mountains making the same water FAST. VERY dangerous, and predicted by many (most).
The rain, winds, etc. were exactly as expected in western SC. The damage and outages were higher because no one accounted for wet soil, and weakened trees. But all in all it's about what I expected on Wednesday, which was the worst case scenario, mostly. The damage has been more than I expected, but the rain totals, winds, etc. were what I was expecting. On Wednesday I pulled out the generator, changed the oil, and got it working knowing there was a good chance of a power outage.
You can't blame the weather models, as they got this one pretty correct. You CAN blame the weather service, and local TV stations for picking the least damaging forecasts to relay to the public.

NWS in Columbia called for 45mph gusts 24 hours before.
Oct 1, 2024, 8:18 PM

Literally ONE weather model called for that level of winds, 6+ others called for 70+mph winds. Yet that's what NWS went with.
Say whatever you want. I expected to lose power. And I expected massive flooding in NC. And that's what happened. And it was not unexpected. It was unreported though.
The storm took the track the majority of weather models showed. It had the intensity most weather models showed. The winds were on par with the majority of models, and the rain in western NC was shown by a majority of weather models.
Now the news, and the NWS picked the least problematic models to issue their forecasts. That's just the plain facts.

Either you’re suggesting that, to have been properly informed for this event, everyone in the mountains should aspire to the same level of rain man-like geekery that you dive into on things of this nature, or that they should completely ignore the most mainstream, widespread and credentialed forecast that was made available to them. Both are so unlikely as to be impossible scenarios.

A thread started by a guy pretending that a Tik tok was inside gossip from an expert friend devolving into a pissssing match with people hellbent on showing how much savvier they are than victims of a massive catastrophe, many whose bodies aren’t even cold yet. GD this place sucks these days.

Honestly, you're emotionally compromised. If this tragedy happened somewhere else you'd be cold blooded. I was here during Sandy and people were cunts about it. In some cases they still are.

To those being c*nts about Helene then I was about Sandy. Here’s the diff between us: I wasn’t one of the ones being a c*nt then, and you are now.
As a reminder, you’re on a Clemson message board—a certain amount of Carolinas-based regionalism is a given. I wouldn’t have gone to a Rutgers board after Sandy with my smug “look how much smarter I am than these victims” shtick and acted shocked when some took offense.

this was your statement "It's the fact that western NC got relatively little warning that it was going to be this bad", which was wrong.
Then I proved that you were wrong multiple times. Your ego couldn't handle admitting you were wrong, and you had a tantrum. And now you are feeling sorry for yourself.
