Just thought I'd give y'all some perspective. I am not following what Miami and SMU, as two examples, are doing this off season. I'm sure both will go heavy into the portal again this year. They have no choice. It worked this year, but no guarantees it will work next year. (Just look at FSU 2022/23 vs 2024.)

But, here is what is happening at FSU. As I am typing 10 guys have entered the portal and 4 have declared for NFL draft. (Cue the jokes - Who the heck on FSU is good enough to play in the NFL?)

But, Norvell is gonna have to go heavy, heavy into portal this year. Most Nole fans are saying 30-40 guys will have to be signed from the portal. I've been saying for weeks that I think that it will be 50+. (I'm factoring in the 105 ship limit, not 85. I don't think 50 will get you even close to 105.)

That's no way to run a program. But, Norvell has no choice. He knows the school is going all in with paying for "big name coaching hires" and the NIL collective will go big time when paying players. (Not to the Michigan or Ohio State or UGA level, but probably in the top 5-10 range.) Norvell knows he better make a bowl next year and win 9 or more in 2026 (minimum) or he will be gone.

Man, I miss the old days when a kid recruited planned on staying at the school 5 years and not getting significant playing time until this 3rd year (R-SO) in the program.

Not a peep, now.

Norvell's problem is that he bet the farm on DJU and didn't even get a couple of healthy cows out of it.

Sanders (9-3) looks pretty good by way of comparison. Same regular season record as Clemson, Bama, Ole Miss, South Carolina...

It's just another form of "win some, lose some,".

He initially got guys from the portal who had been productive at previous colleges - mostly smaller schools. Jared Verse and Braden Fiske being the two most notable. But, there were others also. He got 3 guys from SC who were starters at SC.

In 2024 he went after guys who were at major colleges but hadn't played much. Marvin Jones Jr. from UGA, a WR from LSU and several others. Putting it bluntly, none of them worked out. Either injury or poor performance were the problem. After hitting grand slams his first two years in the portal he struck out swinging 3 times in 2024.

He better hit a few doubles at least this year or he is in real trouble.

leadership is to a team. Jordan Travis was the unquestioned leader and heart and soul of that team that allowed for the massive type of turnover Norvell initiated to still work. Him moving on left a massive gap in that area - no glue for all the newbies.

I believe Sanders is a very decent coach, but he will be facing the same thing in Colorado next season with two locker room leadership stalwarts in his son and Travis Hunter moving on. 9 wins is likely Deion's apex there for a few years, if he sticks around that long.

Talent you can replace. Leadership is a whole different story.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'll give the Nole fan answer, then...

1

Dec 13, 2024, 11:25 PM

... I'll add my personal opinion.

Since he has left FSU he has basically disowned the place. When introduced before NFL gmes he never said "Florida State." He said, "Ft. Myers HS." He had a kid who was a RB in HS. Not his son, but he was the legal guardian for him. The kid went to West Virginia. No problem. But, during the recruiting process Deion made it very clear that the kid would not be going to FSU.

And, the straw the broke the camel's back happened a couple of years ago. Mike Norvel had recruited the #1 player in America. The kid was fully committed. He was recruiting other HS kids to sign with FSU. Then, on signing day, he signed with Jackson State. They had hired Deion as HC. He promised that he would "shock the world" on signing day. He would not tell anyone what the shock would be. The kid had his signing day ceremony. Everyone assumed he would choose FSU. Instead he chose Jackson State. (I'm sure you've figured out the kid was Travis Hunter.)

It wasn't just that the kid flipped on signing day. It was like Deion took great pleasure in stabbing FSU in the back.

That's the Nole fan reason.

My reason is while I think Deion is the best corner ever to play college football (well, with the possible exception of Travis Hunter now) I have never liked his persona. He is very "me centric." It alwasy has to be about him. He is sure to make himself the center of attention. I don't like that attitude in anyone, much less a football coach. And, I don't think it bodes well for any long term success.

This is the transition year. Beginning July 1 there will be some sort of "salary cap." And, somehow any revenue outside of the cap (legitimate money paid by companies, etc. in return for use of name, image and likeness) will be governed and monitored by some sort of "third party."

I expect collectives will be giving guys "signing bonuses" this year so they can get their money before all this new stuff starts in July.

It is my understanding FSU will be "competitive" in NIL, but not at the upper end like Auburn, Ole Miss, Ohio State, Oregon, Michigan, the schools with Texas oil money.

100% with you...not only did they stay in school, wait their turn and develop, but they were diehards and wanted to be at that particular school. Now the school doesn't matter, it's the paycheck no matter where it comes from, quite sad actually and simply indicative too of a generation that's not learned ,respect, loyalty, integrity, etc...just short term vision of how much you can get with the least amount of work.

There’s a lot of truth to what you say, but there’s a not-trivial amount of hyperbole as well.

Why do you think that Stellato and N.Johnson are leaving? If you think it’s because we are being outbid as far as NIL $, then you are wrong. They want playing time, and both realize that meaningful PT is not as likely at Clemson as it is elsewhere.

Do you think that culture and team dynamics play no role in which school the kid prefers to play? Although culture and the overall environment may not always be enough to get a player to take lower NIL $ and stay at Clemson and instead go elsewhere, in some circumstances the ‘quality of life’ factor will a.low Clemson to keep a player with a lower NIL payout than what another school will pay.

Several of the guys leaving FSU, so far anyway, are not leaving becasue they can make more money elsewhere. They are looking for playing time.
