Defense

2

Sep 15, 2023, 8:52 AM

Our defense is just not aggressive. It's coaching(Goodwin) but the buck stops with Dabo. What is it? The talent-we know is there. Are we not hitting enough in practice ? It's better to risk an injury or two than to put a "patty cake" football team on the field on Saturday. Maybe we are not conditioned properly. Are we mentally tough? Don't think so. Are we "hand holding" these men when we should be challenging them and demanding the best from them. Should we sell out more(blitz)? Sure you will get burned sometimes but don't the benefits of playing with aggression outweigh the negatives? Let's go staff before it's too late!

NCAA is now a left leaning political organization whose sole aim is to destroy anything and everything that we have known as American, which includes religion, sports, organizations and institutions of all types, and of course our political system. They are well on their way. Football will someday be extinct or become Flag Football. Might take them another 30 years but they will do it, unless we start standing up to these pointy headed leftists and telling them they cannot do it.

I am not sold on Wes at this point either and don't dispute what you wrote. I also see a lack of intensity compared to previous years.

However, the defense didn't play bad against a good Duke offense and dominated last week. I think we have to reserve judgement until we see them against some more good offenses.

Coach V used to bring the intensity. Def a different style with Wes. I think V used to like to get the "dogs" riled up and let them loose. Again - Wes not that kind of guy. Combine that with what seems to be the lack of intensity leaders on the field and I believe that contributes to the different. Boulware, Skalski, Wilkins carried V's intensity throughout the game with then others.

Missing that Dog in your face guy on the defense. Trotter is all business, but not the in your face kind of leader the defense needs. Ruke is a cut up have fun guy, Tyler is a quiet guy, and Coach V is not there. I just cant see an upset/mad Coach Goodwin intimidating anyone like coach V did.

Don't agree with you...even our greatest defensive teams had some whoops moments...this one can be as good or better...if we have our linebacker gaffes fixed we can be great...GREAT defenses can win championships...ours right now has the ability to shut down anyone...lay off Goodwins butt..BV had a chance to hone his skills at OK...Goodwin is doing it here... Alabama offense was the GOAT at our last natty...unstoppable offense...until we stopped them Booger was shocked, Findbum invented excuses never heard...this D can be better! KEEP THE FAITH!

Dabo never should've hired a DC to learn on the job.

And what did he do? He hired not one, but two of them.

Neither Goodwin or Conn had ever been anything close to a defensive coordinator at the college level when Dabo put them in those roles.

An elite defense such as ours deserved a seasoned, experienced coordinator to replace Venables. The money was there for Dabo to hire anyone he wanted, and he came up with Goodwin and Conn.

Ridiculous.

Nailed it, 100%.

Historically, when Swinney promotes from within, we have problems:

- Elliot
- Conn
- Austin
- Grisham
- Streeter
- (possibly Goodwin)

When we've hired quality coaches outside of the program, we've excelled:

- Jeff/Brad Scott
- Brent Venables
- Garrett Riley

Go figure

Do you even watch the games? How many 3 and outs do you need? Containment is the game and other stats will follow.

Besides, IF you can win against CSU and FAU without tipping FSU off to everything in your bag-o-tricks, why would you do so? It’s going to be tough enough against them without showing all our goodies early.

I've watched almost every game( home,TV and many away since the late 50's). I have friends that have coached football. I watched Frank Howard's teams practice on dirt with blood running down the face of the QB because the hitting was so intense. I think I know a little something about what's required to produce toughness in a football team. You are wrong on two points. Great defense does not focus on "containment"- just the opposite- attack and disrupt. Next you don't hold back for what a future opponent might present(really stupid). Instead you go all out to win, to execute at an high level and to get BETTER every week. Obviously you have learned little or nothing at all from your time watching Clemson football.

We don't play downhill. Last week...

Sep 15, 2023, 10:04 AM

against some option looks, we mirrored and waited rather than blowing it up behind the LOS before it developed. They just didnt have the speed to beat us once the pitch was made. But there were several times that pitches out-leveraged our defenders if you go back and watch, and that will happen if you defend the option rather than attack it.

I remember BV saying that he had to simplify the D for the players when he got here so they could just play rather than think. The default was aggression. In the Duke game, their O was very multiple, and it looks like we have a lot of reads. I actually think Wes knows D, but the system may be too much for the players to process once the ball is snapped. Sometimes less is more.

I never said Wes did not know the Defense. I just said appearance wise he is not very intimidating. But in the end we all must trust what Dabo does as it has work well for over a decade.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It was Wes who simplified the defense when Venables left.

Sep 15, 2023, 11:58 AM [ in reply to We don't play downhill. Last week... ]

Venables didn't trust his backups to play them much and our starters got worn down over the course of the season, like in 2015. Wes simplified things and we now see younger guys contributing earlier.

I went back and watched the Duke game. There were a lot of missed tackles. They were giving Duke the short underneath stuff but missing the tackle. It should of been 3rd and 7 but it would be 3rd and 2. These problems are correctable.

The Duke game was a wakeup game for both of our All American linebackers...they scored out lower than whale manure...just let backs out into the flats untouched and uncovered...in rewatching game tried to quantitate damage...at least 140 yds and many 1st downs...don't win games that way...got it fixed..if we wax FSU espn will forget about Duke and claim FSU wussed out!

In the notably small sample size with an inexperienced secondary I feel like we have played looser coverage in the secondary under Goodwin.

Venables worse year came in 2012 at 58.1% in 2012, allowing an average of 240 passing yards per game with a 58.1% completion percentage (19.1-32.8). The next highest year was 2020 where we allowed 218 yards per game at a 55.4% completion percentage (15.8-28.6) with 1.2 INTs per game

Last year we were at a 61.3% completion percentage, 21.4-31.9 for 231.7 yards with .9 INTS per game

2020 to me is a fairly comparable year because we lost Isaiah Simmons, Aj Terrell, Tanner Muse, K'Von Wallce, where as in 2022 we lost Andrew Booth, Baylor Sector, Nolan Truner, James Skalski, and Mario Goodrich.

I don't have the exact stats to prove we are not tight on coverage, it just seems that way while they are playing. Lots of easy underneath throws on 2nd and long to pick up 6 and make it 3rd-3 vs 3rd-10.
