We don't need to leave the ACC

May 15, 2012, 10:34 PM

All this Big 12 talk is message board BS anyway and I'm surprised it's consumed this much time but the ACC has all the resources to be a great football conference. Clemson, VT, FSU, GT, and Miami have and can all be feared football programs again. What we're lacking in the desire and leadership in the front office.

As long as Swofford or another Tobacco Road lackey is in charge football will always take a back seat to basketball. We can be in a great football conference without going to the Big 12 or anywhere else but we need to start at the top.

#OccupySwofford!!!

I think you are right.... but I also think we are past that

May 15, 2012, 10:41 PM

point..

not even ND could improve the ACC pereception, and nobody is going to give us as lucrative a deal as the SEC or Big XII...

Swofford, and his lackey's, have ruined the conference.

I wish we'd join the SEC.

would be great to play against uga every year. :)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm all for fixing and staying in the ACC, but the problem

May 15, 2012, 10:45 PM

is how long will it take for the ACC to become relevant again. I don't think if FSU was so sure it could be done then they wouldn't be so outspoken about the BigXII. Who would we go after for commish, how long would that take, if he is a football first guy then what does Tobacco Road do or say about it?

I keep seeing posts about Miami, GT, UNC, etc. turning it around and being good again. How far behind will the ACC be by that point? I just think there is too much for the ACC to do with not enough time to keep up. I think we should use BigXII to try and get an SEC invite.

SEC DOES NOT WANT US

May 15, 2012, 11:22 PM

They have all the chips, and the money is in a VT or NC school. I think the public reprimand vote showed where the conference loyalty and power are. The state of NC has too much power with so much representation. However, think about the BIG 12 and state of TX. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss, just like the Who song - Won't Get Fooled Again.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If the NC schools have it made in the ACC then why would

May 15, 2012, 11:43 PM

any of them leave for the SEC. NCSU is just as tied to UNC and Duke. I wouldn't say any of the NC schools are football schools, even State, why would the SEC want basketball schools in a football league. NCSU has more basketball championships(2) than football(0). What would they bring to the SEC?

I think the SEC will start to feel threatened if the BigXII starts poaching the east coast including us and FSU. If NCSU and VT are joining the SEC, then obviously the ACC is dead and the handful of teams that have been mentioned over and over are heading to the BigXII. IF you are the SEC who would you rather have, us and FSU, or NCSU and VT with the BigXII on either side of you?

Re: If the NC schools have it made in the ACC then why would

May 16, 2012, 8:55 AM

We aren't getting an invite to the SEC. It's all about money. And the SEC will not take a paycut. The networks have made it abundantly clear that they are not going to pay up to a conference to expand into their existing footprint. If the Big 12 comes into SEC territory, oh there might be a player or 2 that would go to the Big 12 from SEC territory. But that's countered by the Texas and Missouri recruits who opt for the SEC. It's a wash.

It's all about new TV markets. Why do you think FSU is crapping in its pants? It's because of the fear what new TV monies that the Florida Gators will get after Slive finishes renegotiating the SEC TV deals with the states of Texas and Missouri on the table. If you don't realize the value that adding 2 big states to a conference does for a conference, you will after the SEC announces its new TV deals, soon.

The ACC will soon be so far behind the 8 ball that we wont

May 15, 2012, 10:46 PM

be able to catch back up. GT just doesnt have the fansbase to make enough money to compete nationally, and neither does Miami. Even in the early 2000s when Miami was still a power they struggled to sell out the lower deck. They could compete years ago when talent alone was enough, but now money counts too and thats where they fall short. UNC was ranked a couple years ago and playing a top-25 team at home. Their fans left at halftime to catch the UNC BB scrimmage, no joke. BC had several straight top-25 finishes when they joined the ACC and theyve never generated a fanbase. If you like FB in Mass, just be a Pats fan. VT doesnt have the budget to replace Beamer (most loyal coach ever to stay there) when he retires. Lucky for them they got him when coaches didnt make insane money. Upon his retirement, there program will see a big drop. FSU and Clemson are the only real candidates to become bigtime.

Exactly how many times can I give this a thumbs up?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Too late...The ACC is on the bottom of the totem pole

May 15, 2012, 10:52 PM

and ESPN will make sure we stay there. It is all about $$$ and we can't afford to bring in 8 mil less per year than the dirt peckers. I hope that it is not all message board BS because if it is we are going to be in serious trouble.

Its not bs and yes,...

May 15, 2012, 11:53 PM

if we don't make a move we are going to be at a deep economic disadvantage.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpgringofhonor-clemsontiger1988-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

and therein lies the problem.....

May 15, 2012, 10:53 PM

The ACC will never (EVER) achieve its full potential under its current leadership.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

I don't think it matters anymore.

May 15, 2012, 11:58 PM

Humpty sat on a basketball
Humpty had a hail of a fall
All the Clemson faithful committed a deadly sin
By trying to fix a broken conference.

That don't rhyme and I don't give a chit. It makes my point.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpgringofhonor-clemsontiger1988-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's why I don't think we attempt to fix it, we just find

May 16, 2012, 12:04 AM

a new one. Let the football schools go their own way and leave the rest for Swofford to create the mega-basketball conference of his dreams, as the Big East and ACC combine to make the Big Eastal Coast Conference.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We only control our own destiny.

May 15, 2012, 11:50 PM

FSU, GT, UM and VT have to play for themselves. It's not like we can do anything about how their programs are handled. You expect Dabo to coach, recruit and select their coordinators or what?

You are ready to gamble with Clemson's future on what others do? I'm not. Bail on the ACC or bust!

Re: We only control our own destiny.

May 16, 2012, 8:42 AM

If we win all of our ooc games and a few other teams step up in the acc and do the same thing, the acc will be relevant in football again. The history of the acc is not all that great anyway. Yea we won a national championship and that means we are great and all, but when you lose games to teams you are suppose to beat and go out of conference and lose games, then it is hard to say you are the better team. We were on a roll when we were 8-0 and moving up in the polls. However, we failed to win All of the games and dropped in the polls. The year Auburn won the NC, they didn't lose! The year we won it, we didn't lose. We play enough good teams to make the NC game, but we have to win all of our games. Pretty simple formula, but you have to do it to be great. Unfortunately, we do play in a weaker conference in football, but we play enough good teams in the SEC to show we are a good team if we win all of our games. We just need to play better teams out of our conference the way Fl St did when they weren't in a conference. We take care of business and win, then we will get respect. Lose and we will whine about not being good. Go Tigers!

I still don't see how Swofford is to blame for the conference's record in BCS bowls, and for us giving up 70 to WVU. He's got a tough sell to make.
