Could you imagine if we could have someone like that coach at Clemson?

Rick Barnes was ambitious. But he seemed to believe that

… his ambitions could not be achieved at Clemson. He had confidence in himself, but lacked confidence in Clemson.
He used Clemson as a stepping stone to what he saw as a better opportunity.
Rick Barnes is an prime illustration of what Clemson basketball is capable of in the right person’s hands … and sadly … why the right person is so rare and hard to find, much less hold on to.

We all believed we were seeing a “Changing of the Guard”

I was a relatively young man back then and I had seen a lot of Clemson basketball through the years.
When Rick Barnes showed up, everything about the program was suddenly different … more exciting … more hopeful.
He took over a group labeled the worst in ACC history and won 18 games. He stood up to Dean Smith. He was instrumental in making Coach K quit for a season. He had us on the cusp of greatness with a ranking of #2 in the nation. He beat the Tar Heels in the ACC tourney in Greensboro. He took us deep into the NCAAs. He had us on our way!!
And then he quit …

That's not why Barnes moved lb.

He tried and tried.
Do you know how many times he went head to head with UNC/Duke/Wake/Maryland for top talent?
and lost every single one?
We'd be after a player and it would come down to Clemson/UNC or Clemson/Maryland and every time the player chose "not Clemson."
He saw the writing on the wall and left.

That was when the ACC was tougher. Only 9 teams.

Had to play elite UNC, Duke every year twice. NC State, Maryland Virginia, Wake Forest were usually national contenders. Georgia Tech and FSU were the most winnable. That's 16 conference games. No gimmies ever. Brutal road schedule. Nowhere NEAR as many winnable games as these days. The ACC tournament in Greensboro was like the friggin thunderdome. Just overwhelming.
That 97 team was better than any team since by far. More hustle, more inside power, better point guard play, better ball movement, WAY better defense.

. . . . NOTHING like our current doorknob.
Football games, concerts, events . . . he was a part of what was going on - like Dabo at softball games & baseball games and float building on Bowman, etc.
He was legit at trying to BUILD the enthusiasm - and it worked.

happened - in Clemson - around basketball . . . . with a LEADER that was hungry & motivated & understanding of the BIG PICTURE about building a BIG BOY program.
It is CRAZY to think that the passion exhibited towards WINNING programs at Clemson - namely football - wouldn't be shown in the same way towards WINNING basketball and WINNING baseball . . . on a smaller scale due to the size of the venues.

of all time. The personality of that whole squad was amazing.
My dad called Tom Wideman the garbage man. Always doing the dirty work with no glamour. Harold Jamison was a beast. His dunks were like the Hulk. Terrell McIntyre was the type of guy you go to war with. Dependable and scrappy. Harrison Buckner was the stallion. He could play on any ACC squad. Merl Code was the veteran. Iker Iturbe was solid muscle and a nice short jumper. Tony Christie was our Steve Kerr, though his 3% was better than his FT% half the time.
They all had that underdog mentality and Barnes orchestrated it into something amazing. I loved that team.

night and set up my tent at 3am waiting for the NC St game that Sat. Kept my tent up during the game, and afterward, more started to follow. I was like the eighth tent in line, and by Sun night there were at least 2000-3000 students hanging out and partying on the LJ lawn. It was a spectacle as we camped into Mon morning waiting ticket handout for the epic Tim Duncan #2 Clemson vs #2 WF game that would be played later in the week
There were kegs everywhere. We emptied a barrel trash can and lit a fire to stay warm. Fireworks and streakers. People rappelling down the side of the building. It was an absolute circus.
And yes, RB showed up with pizza. It was one of my favorite college experiences. I made a choice to drop my computer science class early Mon morning, deeming that weekend far more important than the webpage I’d learn to build a couple semesters later
I LOVED that team I LOVED Clemson basketball Clemson came back down like 6-8 pts in the final minute to beat Duke that year too Super fun home game
I don’t need Clemson bball to be a top program… I do want it to feel exciting and I do expect to be a contender in the conference every handful of years. They are reasonable expectations.
