The writer's tone and opinions are a little off-putting...

Oct 18, 2013, 9:44 AM

...because there IS an ounce of truth to what he's saying. When you look at the numbers, the won-loss records against traditional powers, etc., we are not among the "elite" powers. I think most of us know that, but definitely have a hard time admitting it.

The era that he refers to, 1992-2008, is important because that's when college football exploded, thanks to media & cable TV. College football's popularity has a ton to do with the information age, and that's when we were as mediocre as ever. Except for the older fans and Clemson fans, most people don't remember the national title or our success during the 1980s. And, when you take that period away, we were a very pedestrian program save for a few big years.

Up here, people are casual college football fans at best. I've gotten a ton of snide comments about Clemson from people I don't know, usually referring to how Clemson isn't an elite power and is never going to win a national title. As the writer says, we see ourselves much differently than most of the country does. I think most people know we have potential and we have our good years, but we aren't a perennial power. Until now, that's been true for the last three decades, unfortunately. Dabo is changing that.

John Heisman laid one of the first building blocks,

Neely added more, Howard put the frame up, Ford Pretty much finished it except for the roof. Dabo is working on that.

Go Tigers!!!

No doubt. That article was completely riddled with factual

Oct 18, 2013, 2:02 AM

errors, mischaracterizations, and very poor from a contextual view. Not to mention how much proven success and tradition it conveniently and selectively left out.

I kind of feel like I just read a middle school book report

For some reason. Not good, not bad, several inaccuracies and a few truths. I give it a C.

You can obviously tell the guy hasn't a clue

I'm sure any alum can tell you Clemson's greatest assets have nothing to do with football. Heck, football games were less important to me while I was a student than any time before or since. For the size our our school, and the location, we overachieve year after year in recruiting. There's a reason for that. The school sells itself better than any coach's sales pitch.

Typical yankee Duke grad. Unknowledgeable of college

football, but ready suck Coach K's c#&k in a couple months.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

IMO this is a very interesting article since we are biased..

Oct 18, 2013, 12:53 AM

in so many ways with our college football "worth" and grand history..and as writer said in a nice way..Clemson hasn't done all that great but thinks it has..and that's the truth guys overall..until Dabo keeps doing what Danny did..and that's whip #### in both the ACC, SEC & Nationally (aka Nebraska for NC). Nuff said, keep winning!

Go#3TiGERs!

There was zero context. We had Heisman, should have won

Oct 18, 2013, 2:11 AM

the '59 Sugar Bowl vs. LSU, which won the national championship, '78-'92 one of the best programs in the country, and much more.

I love how people still talk about our probation. Every SEC school but Vandy has been on probation more than we have. Bama has been on probation more the past 20 years than they have been off.

Are we biased? Yes! But that story was wayyy off base and riddled with factual errors and gross mischaracterizations.

It's almost stunning to be agreeing with you. +1.***

Nice to get attention, but the journalist isn't very

Oct 18, 2013, 2:26 AM

knowledgeable (and I am being objective). This article is more of the same pat stereotypes, not very indepth, with very little research. Clemson, because of size back in the mid-20th century was never going to be a consistent powerhouse program back then. Major growth had to occur, but with just the athletic program, but with the university. And Clemson has had a good football program for many years, just not a consistent program. But in reality, consistency in most college sports is hard to come by (most especially in football it seems).

We are in every poll I've ever seen universally considered

Oct 18, 2013, 7:32 AM

to be one of the top 25 or 20 football programs of all time. We have the most unique tradition in college football, as well as other long standing traditions. We have 13 ACC titles, a national title, 5th winningest program of the 80s. From 77 thru 92 we were a top 20 program that could beat anyone. The '59 Sugar Bowl is still considered an all time classic, we had Heisman, Frank Howard was a legend, Ford is the youngest to win a national title (or darn close and youngest in modern football), the Woody Hayes incident, and more. We are a tiny town 4 hours from the huge population of the coast, yet have over 80,000 at games and consistently rank in the top 12 in attendance.

Anyone that thinks Clemson is not a true football school with a rich history is out to lunch.

of naivety, it's very easy to read between the author's lines and arrive at an obvious conclusion: typical effete snobbery with shades of guile covering extreme bias against Clemson.

Then again, this is the WSJ...where snobbery and guile are required for admission to their elite club of know-it-alls. So we have our football-oriented flair....This character and his cohorts have their self-appointed, guruish, condescending flair!

errors and mischaracterizations every few sentences.

If you think that story was accurate you are either a kid or clueless about the history of Clemson football.

Re: Wall st journal article about CU football

Oct 18, 2013, 7:34 AM

If I had read the descriptions in the article, minus the names and geography, I would have no idea what school this author was describing.

Clemson has always had years of adversity, but the fans and the alumni never gave up... never, never, never gave up. Why didn't you write that, Ben, instead of the look-down-your-nose snarky piece you penned?
