Wake Forest (non support)

Oct 26, 2012, 1:23 PM

I grew up in Winston-Salem and the lack of support from the community
can be directly attributed to Wake's long time air of arrogance and elitist attitude. Most high school kids in W-S, at least where I grew up, could not afford the tuition at Wake thus opted for UNC, NCSU, ECU, and App. State.

Back in the late 60's early 70's when our guys were returning from Viet Nam, other nearby schools opened their doors for night classes to accommodate Veterans wishing to pursue a degree. Not Wake. Many enrolled at UNCC, App.State, Guilford, High Point, and Garner-Webb to work toward a degree.

It is difficult for the W-S community to get behind and support Wake Forest. Had they been more acceptive to the common people over the years I think they could fill their 30,000 seat stadium on a regular basis.

Sadly, Wake Forest has missed that opportunity.

So the locals were put-off by Wake's elitist attitude....

so they chose instead to attend UNC?

Aside from UVa, UNC has the most arogant and pompus
attitude of any school I have ever encountered.

You're right, I've been living in Winston-Salem for 20 years. Your hit the nail on the head. That's why Grobe can stay forever with break-even records and also why they can take the back side on their football stadium for tennis courts.

Agree...and they love their basketball like UNC & others***

I wonder if it also has to do, historically at least, with

the fact the Wake only moved to WS in the '50s because Big Tobacco built them a new campus? This lack of connection to the community literally goes back decades. It's also a small school in a good-sized city on which the local economy has never been dependent, unlike a small town like Clemson that relies on the university.

A couple of points here

In regards to their elitist attitude hurting support, I don't doubt it. B.C. has the same problem in Boston. I'm sure Wake has done a few things in its past to rub the locals the wrong way. With this said, however, I do believe that there are two much bigger factors at play here:

1. The fact that Wake is tiny. I mean TINY. Many of you went to high schools with a bigger enrollment than that of Wake. It's is 3,000+ I believe and the smallest D-I school in the country. Alumni growth is exponential-- Clemson issues, what, 4,000 new alumni (i.e. fans) a year? Wake issues less than 1,000.

2. It's a private school so, naturally, you have students and, therefore, alumni, from all over the country. You can assume with so many people from out of state that they settle out of state after college, too. It's not like Clemson, where roughly 70% of our student body is from South Carolina (and would seemingly settle there after they graduate).
