Today is Winston's last day

I've had quite a few dogs in my 60 plus years, but Winnie is the best dog I ever had. I always said, "Winnie would take a bullet for you." Nothing but loyalty and love.

He's been in geriatric care for about three years. Continually getting a bit more comfort measures. We went on a 5 day ski trip and he just had a rough time while we were gone. I was a bit worried because he has been going down quicker lately.

He stays at home with his lil sis pepper and a sitter comes 4 times a day. She works for me and has been doing this for years. I made a vet appointment the Monday we got back (last) but called on Thursday to cancel and have them send a vet over on Monday (tomorrow) to euthanize him instead. I won't let him suffer and there is nothing more that we can do. He's been to the Vet so many times its not even funny. He never has to go back. He hates that place.

A couple of years ago someone posted about their dog and doing all the things he liked on his last day. I don't remember who, but I said, that's the way Winnie is going. That post made me cry back then and I've thought about it often and I teared up every time.

Wife only worked one day last week and I took a some time off too so we could be with him. He's had a good week, we are there to help him if he needs it just make sure he is comfortable.

He had a ribeye steak for dinner last night and plenty of treats. We played ball as much as he could went to the park had plenty of rides in the car just around the block. Mcdonalds for lunch today and another ribeye for tonight. There's been a bunch of tears. He's been sleeping in the bed under the covers. It was nice throwing his diet away for a week. Extra pain meds, and no more shots.

I've had a lot of dogs die, but none have ever been anywhere near this tough. All the kids moved out so it's just us and the dogs and we love it. We had 5 kids and a grandkid and a husband just a few short years ago. (along with the two dogs. Everybody loves Winnie)

He's had such a good couple of days, but it's time...

lives by becoming accepted members of the family. They bring such joy into our lives and I'm continually amazed at how no two dogs/cats are the same - every one of them we have ever had has possessed their own specific individual, distinct personality.

Sounds like you are giving Winston a proper send off and while the decision to part this earthly bond with him is totally heart wrenching - you are being responsible and loving to Winston in doing so. May you find the inevitable grief of saying a final goodbye be tempered by the wonderful memories that Winston gave you along your shared earthly journey.

Always jerking tears at the thought.

Thinking of you and yours during these tough days.

Sorry for your loss, bud! Hang in there

You’re a great dog dad. I know that it’s an emptiness that never goes away. On the flip side, his legacy will live with you for the rest of your life as you care for others the way he has cared for you.

Best to you and yours in your loss. It sucks.
We really don’t deserve dogs.
