Alabama declining?

Are we witnessing the start of Alabama’s post-Saban decline already. DeBoer isn’t winning with Saban’s players. How will it be going three years from now when the recruiting pipeline has dried up?

And maybe Saban didn't stick around long enough in the NIL era to overtake his name that he has built up as being the best or one of the best college FB Head Coaches. We all know that bigger money will always win out given enough time. IMO Saban seems healthy enough that he could have coached a few more years, but he was feeling what the NIL was doing with recruiting...

I agree that Bama is Bama, but for them to stay where they've been during the Saban era, they will need a very healthy NIL war chest, or they would've dropped a notch or two even with Saban. Money walks the walk regardless of the HC, and the money is what landed the NCAA in the courts bc the players wanted their share that the NCAA was refusing to give up. If the NCAA would have worked out a pay for play deal for college FB players, they would've never been taken to court, and the pay for the players would have been much less than they're getting right now!!! Folks can agree or disagree, but I believe that if the NCAA would have done the right thing when FB players were asking for a little more money, the NIL wouldn't be a thing, not right now anyways!!!

As usual, no credit for other teams getting better. Football is overall better than it has ever been and just because a team has won in the past does not mean they will win again and again.

Again you are wrong, if not for the NIL Saban could have pass his program off to one of the better known coaches in college FB and they would have continued to be the top program in the SEC bc Bama has a very long history of being one of the better FB program in college FB history minus a couple of times where they made bad head coaching choices...

If you aren't prepared to work at least 12 hour days you shouldn't be considered a serious candidate at Alabama . Nick Saban was said to work 18hrs/ day.
Serious question : How long has it been that Alabama finished outside the top 10 ?

Bama had 20+ players head to the portal since last season, 10 of which were high profile and left once Saban returned plus they lost six recruits.
Saban was the greatest CFB coach of all time so to think there would not be a bumpy transition is foolhardy at best.
I can imagine Bama being able to hire a replacement for Saban who could have avoided some level of drop off in the near term. The question for the new coach is if he can limit the bleeding to one or two seasons. Longer than that, the fans will freak out as they were conditioned to be at the top for the last 15ish years.

Are you saying the 21-23 teams weren’t a pretty big step down from 15-20? Because they were, the offense was offensive.
This year looks promising. But we will see how they handle the road games at Pitt and VT.

A program in decline would like Idaho dropping from FBS to FCS. Neither Alabama ot Clemson is going anywhere. Alabama has such a strong tradition they could let Kamala Harris coach for a season and still get good recruits.

Technically, from a CFP results standpoint, Clemson has declined ever since the last CFP title. Dabo has raised expectations so much that anything short of a CFP appearance is considered a failed season by the fans. Ridiculous thinking in my mind but fans will be fans.
2018 - Won the CFP 2019 - Lost the CFP 2020 - Lost in the semi-final of the CFP 2021 - Didn’t make the ACCCG; won the bowl game 2022 - Won ACCCG; lost the bowl game 2023 - Didn’t make the ACCCG; won the bowl game

That does not mean the program is in decline. It is a cycle most schools go through. WE are just getting to the point now where we don't have people pining about Danny Ford who was decidedly nowhere near as agood a coach as Dabo is. OMG we don't play for the nation championship every single year...the program must be declining! Remind me to never take you guys on a camping trip where there is adversity.

I believe that bc of the Dabo brain fart had with hiring to many Jr coaches with very little coaching experience gave our opponents a lot to tell the recruits that we were recruiting, and they used how inexperienced our coaching hires were to win them over, or to get them thinking about somewhere else other than committing to Clemson. Everybody that follows recruiting close, they have seen our recruiting take more than the usual hits than we took before our coaching staff starting taking jobs else where...
The loss of BV, Tony, Jeff Scott, and several others, our recruiting hasn't been as good as it was before they left, and I truly believe over anything that it's been bc of the replacement hires that Dabo made within without doing a serious national search to replace those coaches. As soon as Dabo realized what was happening with recruiting and the playing level of our team, he has been correcting his brain fart mistakes and bringing in better coaches to replace the brain fart hires, we are getting better as a team, and hopefully we'll be able to get our recruiting back to what it was before several coaches took other positions elsewhere.
Even having great coaching isn't enough for us to recruit the way we were before our staff breakup. Our NIL bank will need the big bucks for us to compete in that area right now bc, all elite players expect to be paid, even the ones coming right out of HS that hasn't proven a thing at the college level, they to expect to be paid, especially the 4-5 star guys right out of HS. We're going to have a tough row to hoe, but I do believe that Dabo is smart and wise enough to find a way for us to compete at a high level, and if he can't find a way, we will be a Clemson nation of very sad FB fans with only our memories to talk about...

It would be foolish to think when Saban retired, DeBoer could just pick up where he left off without any drop off. Saban was the Goat. Discipline seems to be an issue, with stupid penalties. One change Deboer made was to allow music to be played during practice, and to “lighten up” the atmosphere… well, more relaxed in practice and the drop off in team discipline is evident by their inconsistent play.

Just ask those who were ready to push Dabo out the door here recently for missing the CFP for three years and letting the game pass him by due to his stubbornness and hubris. We're Clemson after all - with our resources and support just plug and play. Championship level head coaches are overrated.

The 2023 Alabama Crimson Tide football team had 45 players leave the team during the off-season: 15 players graduated, 12 players entered the 2023 NFL draft, and 18 players entered the transfer portal.
Sure he's got talented players as holdovers, and sure he brought some talent in, but that's a ton of turnover.

This is his first season as HC, and he isn’t Nick Saban. Remember when Dabo was first hired? Granted it is a different situation because a coach retired instead of being fired; but still, there is a “buy in” period for the players in the new system. And who knows how well he will recruit? Barring something crazy, he deserves at least three seasons to install his system and get the buy-in from the players, regardless of who recruited them.

I applied to Alabama and accepted but went to Clemson. Loved Tide football for a long time. Bear Bryant was my hero.
There's no question they're on the decline.... for the simplest, most obvious reason... Saban is gone. Things will not be the same for a long time... very good still ? Maybe.
The dominant age is over.... I will return to say I was wrong if not.... but I wouldn't bet on it. (I'm wrong plenty, no argument there).

He is a dang good coach and will be fine. Eventually, Bama will move on but Deboer will land on his feet somewhere good.
They will never be that good again, Saban is the GOAT and nowhere to go but down.

Good points by all here…. I didn’t realize they had so much turnover. So that definitely hurts. I’m also not sure how much the offense changed for Milroe. I think it takes at least three years to make a college team your own. So the jury will be out for a couple of seasons. But if DeBoer goes backwards, say 9-2 this year, 6-5 in 2025 I wonder if he’ll get a third year. He has to at least hold serve until he makes it his own team. As for Clemson, we know what a difference a QB makes so let’s see what DeBoer can bring in.

Saban was one of the best college football coaches to ever walk the sidelines. I cannot imagine the pressure this new guy is under or why he would have even took that job. It is an impossible task to follow up Saban’s record.

The most shocking thing I see with this Alabama team is the lack of discipline. That is on the head coach, regardless of the roster talent or W-L record.

Yes they are declining.
They lost a legendary coach.
How many times has any program kept the same consistency after losing a coach like that?
Maybe some, but obviously it’s not likely to happen.

They lost an astronomical amount of talent via the portal when CNS left. He is not playing with the players that they would have been without the coaching turnover.
