USA TODAY columnist says Dabo Swinney should bring his guts to Florida

Florida-based USA TODAY columnist Matt Hayes says Dabo Swinney should go coach the Florida Gators if he doesn't feel appreciated enough in Clemson:
I have a better idea for Dabo: if he doesnāt like the criticism of his championship-level program, or the lack of trophies since he last won it all seven years ago, quit and take a bigger bite of the apple.
Go clean up the mess at Florida.
Pack your bags and bring your own guts to Gainesville, where the once mighty Gators havenāt been worth spit since 2020 ā and havenāt won the SEC since 2008.

Heād never succeed playing an SEC schedule and being hardheaded about the portal. No chance! He can cakewalk through the ACC and pad wins every year. He canāt do that at Florida.

The portial isn't the only issue, take a close look at your staff, the friends and family plan ain't gonna work in the SEC. He would have to hire the best for it to work at FL.

I dare say heād be in a position to rub it in the faces of some of the more short-sighted Tiger fans.

and Georgia, kids would jump at those opportunities, especially when much of your competition is Miami and FSU and a student body of 60,000. That's a lot of alumni and a lot of money.

He has already publicly stated if he had to start over at another program he would have to use the portal. His reasons for not using the portal much is that he feels he has built the program to a level that he doesn't need to use it like some other teams do.
Do any of you actually take the time to really listen when he talks or are you bunch of headline readers?

OK, I found what he really said. He stated that if he left Clemson and went somewhere that he had to do a rebuild, then he would definitely use the portal.

I think Florida with the help of Steve Spurrier is going to make him the highest paid coach in college football.....which I hope doesn't happen but this year feels different.
I think Dabo knows this team is going to be hot garbage next year and his press conference the other day was to let teams know he may be available.....just a gut feeling.
Spurrier would love to stick it to Clemson one last time.

The struggle against an SEC schedule would be real for Dabo if he insisted on hiring unqualified coaches, running a boring offense, and largely failed to utilize the transfer portal and NIL to their fullest.
The only way he would be successful at Florida to the point that he "rubbed it in our faces" is if he starts doing the very things we want him to do here.

Dabos not going anywhere. Iām sure a desperate program would give him a long leash initially, but if he thinks heāll get the zero leash he has at Clemson? No chance. He knows this.

Yep. He's sitting very pretty right in little old Clemson. If he went to Florida, or anywhere else, and didn't succeed, he would face sharp criticism and would probably be gone quickly. His legacy would be hurt.

Also, Dabo doesn't have to go to Florida to clean up a mess when he has one right in his own backyard. He doesn't strike me as a dude who is going to fly because of trouble. He's worked through plenty of tough stuff in his life. He's not a quitter. Don't know if he can get the Tigers back to 2015-2020 prominence, but he certainly seems to be willing to give it a go.

I would never say never, Dabo has accomplished a lot at Clemson, after 17.5 years at Clemson he could be looking at new challenges like he said in the presser he's 55, gotta lot more coaching left in him. University of Florida would be a perfect Gig, a fresh start so to speak, to resurrect a dead program and surpass Spurrier and Urban Myers accomplishments in the process. Florida has a huge following/alumni base, loaded with Big Boosters, and would not be but a hop, skip, and jump to his second home from Gainesville.

Florida has always been a great job. They have made some bad hires.
Bear Bryant called them a sleeping giant.
That's one of the few jobs that Dabo might consider.
Hope they don't come calling...

From reports I am seeing and reading ( do some research not goin to spoon feed ya ) Florida may have already thru 3rd parties reached out to Dabo. Maybe reason the long winded presser yesterday, like he's letting you know there are challenges out there he could be interested in. Remember the ole ball coach ( Spurrier ) has said on occasions 10 years is enough at any school. There's not a better school out there at this time than Florida needing to hire a proven winner as HC.

That would be a terrible move for Dabo, his family and for Florida. 1) Dabo is happy at Clemson despite a few jassack fans. 2) Florida is beginning to rival South Carolina as the graveyard where coaches go to die, and 3) Uhaul doesn't have enough trucks and trailers in the Upstate to move Dabo's Friends & Family brigade to Florida.

I think it would be a good idea for Dabo to take another opportunity. He has lost the spark at Clemson and this season will go down as one of his worst.
I think a shakeup is what is needed for all parties involved

And forfeit $60 million? And punk out just because things are a little behind schedule at Clemson? Nope. The Florida program has been a mess for the last 15 years. Dabo has his own issues that need to be cleaned right here. Trying to clean someone else's mess probably not the best idea.

Hey the SEC is going to be top dog on the money front and who knows about the future of the ACC. Most coaches want stability for present and future. You have to look at all opportunities and prepare to stike while the iron is hot ( timing factor ).

in the talent-laden state of Florida, a big draw in the talent rich state of Georgia and a fan based starved for success who would embrace him with open arms.
I can see Dabo jumping all over that opportunity and I wouldn't blame him for it, though I know our program would suffer if he left. Clemson is a unique place that history has shown takes a unique leader to have the kind of success we have enjoyed over the last 10 years.

Dabo's second home away from Clemson is in Florida. He bought a home down there years ago and spends most of his off season down there per reports.

Clemson is a unique and difficult place to build a program. We were lucky Terry Don picked Dabo, but I couldn't blame him for taking advantage of the opportunity.
We might be able to attract a good young coach looking for a stepping stone but my guess is we would fall off a cliff.

If the Florida BOT were to decide the future of Florida football I doubt that would include Dabo.
Dabo has made his position on the portal and it is well known and non- negotiable.
His approach would not work at Florida or any school for that matter that takes full advantage of all resources at their disposal in the arms race that has become college football. Its a huge industry now and as unfortunate as it is Dabo's approach will in no way be successful at such a venue. Those boys play for keeps and throw all else in the trash. Intentionally handicapping your team would be the quickest way to be shown the exit.
So , if he is going to change his approach in light of his new more challenging arena , he should first just do it here where he belongs and is happy.

due to several factors:
1. He would expect to be paid at the top of college football coaches. 2. He would insist on having complete control of everything. 3. He would not fully utilize financial incentives available to recruits. 4. He would not take full advantage of the transfer portal.
I have no doubt that he would improve Florida's program if he went there, but if he doesn't make some big changes Florida would not come close to being an elite program under him. If he doesn't make some big changes here, we are likely to continue our decline - and we don't have to face an SEC schedule.

1) Dabo has no interest in the Florida job. 2) Florida has no interest in Dabo.
