Update: Tiger Paw Sighting in Virginia

This is a follow-up post to fill in the blanks from the post below that I made in July.

I had the pleasure of watching the Gator Bowl at the same restaurant referenced in the original post. When the owner noticed my Clemson football t-shirt, he pulled up a chair and we talked for a few minutes.

As it turns out, the owners are the proud parents of a recent Clemson graduate. The young man I saw them speaking to in July is their son. Apparently, he had just gotten a job in Greenville, and he was due to start his new job. I do not recall the name of the company, but he currently lives and works in Greenville.

For those of you who attended the Gator Bowl in person, their son was at the game cheering with you. He had been visiting his parents in Virginia, but flew back down to Greenville the day before the Gator Bowl. Then, drove the rest of the way to Jacksonville the day of.

It is really nice to have a restaurant/bar in the area with a direct tie to Clemson. Go Tigers!

Yesterday, I was already in a good mood, as I was looking forward to sipping good bourbon on whiskey Wednesday, and then I was surprised as I spotted a Tiger paw as I was pulling up to the joint. Then, inside, one of the owners had on a Clemson Tee.

A 20-something year-old young man was speaking with the owners. They all seemed excited, but I didn't get an opportunity to get the intel on the Clemson connection. But don't you worry, I'll definitely be going back.

I mean, you know what I mean. That was great of them for their son to attend Clemson with out of state tuition. Wonder if one of the parents is a Clemson grad or had Tiger blood in their ancestry.

I would bet Chuck (the owner) would have mentioned any other ties to Clemson. That would be a good question to ask. I will certainly inquire whenever I get the chance.

The best BBQ sauce and flavor I've ever experienced was in VA at a wedding, many years back. A peppery and spicy vinegar based, NC like, but with a heroin quality to it where you just couldn't stop. The pork was chopped versus pulled. Yum.

Northern VA has come a long way since the 80s when I first moved here. No good barbecue to be found back then. Now, there are a few places here that are head and shoulders better than some places I've been further south.

I grew up outside Harrisonburg, Virginia

in the Shenandoah Valley. I can promise you, BBQ (the way most in the south knows it) simply doest come up they way it does in NC, SC, GA and TN or Texas or Kansas City.

I tell what was popular though: Dave Shirkey Chicken. Churches, Rotary Clubs, and High School Booster clubs would make this all the time for fund raising in our area. You'd pull up and either by a half or full chicken, pay cash, and they'd grab the chicken wrapped in Aluminum foil out of a cooler and drive off without ever getting out of the car.

Here is an article, and also the recipe.

There's a good local neighborhood vibe there, unlike many places here. The food is good. The service is great. Every time I've been there, the owners have always been engaging with customers.
