2014 Clemson Tigers...national champs??

Jul 20, 2015, 8:47 AM

Was reflecting back on last season and couldn't help but feel a sting of pain when thinking of what could have been. Sure, it was a great year with some signature moments...DW's emergence, beating Skerlina, the bowl game....but I can't help but feel like we were capable of so much more.

We had the best defense in the country last year, and one of the best anywhere in recent memory. We had an abundance of talented skill players on offense yet again. We had a phenomenal QB as good as anybody in the country. So what gives??

Despite all the success we had, I think that fate worked against us for the most part...

1. I've said before that starting Stoudt against UGA was absolutely the right call. But after 1 throw from DW, it was clear who the better QB was. Our D held up great until the 4th quarter, whose collapse was inevitable considering the offense couldn't stay on the field for more than 1 set of downs. With a few more 1st downs and a score or two, I think we would have won that game, or at least made it close until the end.

2. Fortunately, the coaches realized this by game 3 and DW got his chance to carry the team. And wow, what a performance. Watson's showing at FSU might have been remembered as the greatest performance by a true freshman QB of all time had we been able to pull off the upset. Thinking about JUST how close we were still makes me sick...

a. Stoudt underthrowing Leggett for TD early
b. Lakip missed FG
c. Lakip missed second FG
d. Seckinger being half a yard short of goal-line on
pass from DW
(immediately followed by)
e. Davidson being in on goal-line, but no review
(Immediately followed by)
f. Snap over DW's head
g. Alexander's lone blunder, falling while Greene scores
h. Davidson fumble
i. 4th and inches in OT

If one, JUST ONE of these things go our way, we would have come out on top that night. The fact that we didn't get any credit or respect from that game still irks me.

3. Watson injury, pt. 1. Had the defense not bailed us out, we could have potentially lost to Louisville, Syracuse, or even Wake. Luckily that wasn't the case as miracle plays at opportune times saved our butts (Humphries punt return, defensive TD, Kearse miracle tackle, Anthony INT vs Syracuse...)

4. Watson injury, part 2. No way in hail we lose to GT with a healthy Watson. We were on the verge of running them out of their own building. What's crazy is, after no offense and 3 horrible turnovers, we STILL could have potentially come back from behind.

I guess this is what coaches and writers mean when they say, "the ball has to bounce your way sometimes." I think we might have missed a great opportunity for a playoff season last year. Despite the setbacks, it's amazing to think we still won 10 games and had a very successful season. Truly a testament to where Dabo has brought us in recent years...we could have very easily folded and gone 7-6!

Looking forward to the many more playoff opportunities in our near future...it's a good time to be a Tiger! Enjoy the ride

clemson lost a game it dominated, i'm not sure you earn

Jul 20, 2015, 9:00 AM

respect from that comedy of errors. everything was there for the taking, but the team could not & did not take advantage.

i believe you earn respect when things go wrong, but you overcome them & win. playing with effort should be a requirement or expectation and if you go back to post OB[WVU] it's what both freeman & dabo discussed in clemson needing to get better..

as much as that loss makes me sick to my stomach, i believe or hope clemson grew from it.

There is no way we didn't grow from it. It was one of the biggest embarrassments of my lifetime, but look where we have come, and look at them. I think we have improved a heap from that time. We are on the verge of being very special, and very special for a long time, IMO.

the looks of disbelief on the faces of coach & player alike

Jul 20, 2015, 9:50 AM

were "heartbreaking".

the coaches & leaders of the team seem to have done a remarkable job of putting it in proper perspective. my goodness, last year was still in question by many fans before the scar game, but apparently not in question by the team or staff.

it's part of the culture change that dabo, clemson & staff have wrought with the football program; next level stuff is there for the taking.

Agreed, and I believe Dabo is all about reaching out and taking hold of it and keeping it for a while, too.

Agree

Last years FSU game, like WVU before it, will be a learning and growing experience for the program... Even if it is difficult to see it that way at the time or shortly after.

it's the difference on the field between fsu & clemson...

Jul 20, 2015, 10:00 AM

no matter how poorly fsu played, they won. they never quit no matter how ineptly their offense played or how many times clemson threatened in the redzone.

i don't have to like fsu or the goings on there to see the resilience of a team that had lost their emotional leader. as clemson fans, it's one of the reasons we enjoy the oklahoma thrashing so much. there were serious questions about clemson's ability to win that game without DW.

good thing the team & staff weren't paying attention to all that bunk.

You are right about the Oklahoma game

Jul 20, 2015, 10:20 AM

That was a good one

Of course, it helps that Oklahoma "didnt want to be there" ;)

of course, i 'magine they picked up that excuse from the

I agree with you. Watched the replay on e$ECpnu last Saturday morning and it always beats me up inside, and I can only imagine how the players felt. They gave it all! And the way the cameraman kept reverting back to a suspended Shameis Winston cheering on the sidelines only enfuriated me more. We had our chance to go on the road to beat a #1 ranked defending national champion semenhole team, and we blew it from so many different angles. Here's to hoping we obliterate those clowns in Death Valley this year! I despise their bandwagon fans and Bimbo!

All your points well taken. Same could be said on a couple of the losses to usuc. Just a couple of incomplete passed that easily should have been caught wins 2 of those losses. Woulda, coulda, shoulda. Still, we are so far ahead (light years ahead) of where we have been, and getting even farther ahead as the OL continues to improve. The future of Clemson football should be a fun one to live through.

Yep...as I like to say,

"If my aunt had balls, she'd be my uncle."

But I agree about the skerlina games....that deep pass that sammy dropped in 2011 might have set the tone for the game. Had em right where we wanted em in 2012 too

I'm no prophet but I've been thinking since the recruiting from the end of 2012 that 2016 would be the year. I think next season will be good, but I'm still looking for 2016 as the year we simply dominate.

I see your point, but I think we can get a head start on that this year, with a few early breaks and some momentum to help carry our confidence. Get on a roll, and somebody better get out of the way or get squashed.

I knew that night in Sep that we were playing for a playoff

spot.

But the schedule and key injuries did us in. But we had a team that could have been in the hunt.

But if we had been 12-1, it's likely we could have been the odd man out come playoff committee time.

That could have well been true, unless we only lost to GT,

The accidents to DW were of his own doing.

Jul 22, 2015, 2:03 AM

The problems we had with Cole were The Chad's doings.

UGA Game

Jul 22, 2015, 9:44 AM

It really wasn't as close as you make it sound. The first half was great, the second half we couldn't even manage a first down, so to say we needed "a score or two" is a huge leap. But I think that game was the best thing that could've happened to us all season. It woke our defense up and punched them in the mouth. If they wanted to be this great defense that everyone was talking about before the year started, they were going to have to show it.
