However, in this context it simply means not securing the ball properly. 😎

Terrell had better make sure that he is not lacking in the next two games as he was in the Duke, SMU and Syracuse games. Coverage and tacking was not great in those. He has been better in the last two games. Tackle better with two arms wrapped around the ball carrier.

When I listened to the interview I thought AV said he was lagging and took that to mean he was carrying the ball poorly and that was why he went after the ball. I could see where the word lacking could have been used but to me in context lagging was what he was saying.
