Every time I hear Trump talk about annexing Canada as our 51st state, I cringe.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/other/trump-s-threats-and-statehood-taunts-reset-race-to-lead-canada/ar-AA1z6LMq

The reason for that is simple. Canada is FAR more liberal than the US. They're also as populous as California, slightly more actually. They would, by most accounts, lean roughly 80/20 DEM, if annexed. They would also gain 44 House seats, and who knows how many electoral college votes. Again, breaking 80/20 DEM. Just look at who they elected.

So, knowing this, and hearing Trump continue to say they should be a state (and assuming someone with at least a high school knowledge of civics has bent his ear at some point), this points to a man who does not care about the political consequences. It is something a ruler would say who does not plan on another election under the same rules as the past 200+ years. Because if you know and plan to adhere to free elections as we have always had them, then you know this is a BAD IDEA. Politically. Where politics (may) matter in a free nation.

And to hear republicans, some I know personally, who I KNOW.....KNOW the political disaster this would be for conservatives in the US, to hear them cheer Trump and promote this ANYWAY, scares the crap out of me. Because that shows me they too are fine having a ruler, and are done with free elections, and the Constitution by extension.

Why I cringe. Annexing Canada would be political suicide for the party that put Trump in office.

It's beneath the dignity of the office to refer to the leader of our best friend on the planet is a "governor".

I also cringe because Trump talking like he does about Canada is signaling to other authoritarian regimes around the world that he's OK with attacks on sovereign nations. Putin loves this stuff, as does Xi.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well, the optics suck, so I'm just going with what he keeps saying.

I mean he's threatened to stop protecting Canada. ####, that agreement dates back to 1823. How far back do we have to go to find a "great" America? Also threatened Panama with our military.

I'm just curious how other people justify this type of rhetoric/grandstanding/or heaven forbid, policy?

Trump doesn't see the world as "allies" and "enemies"....

He sees all nations as competitors. And in his worldview, if one nation is winning, that by definition means another nation is losing.

So, he doesn't see Canada as our friend, our ally, our mutual trading partner, or our fellow NATO member. He sees them as a competitor, and to him, it's fair game to bully them, threaten them, and treat them as if they were an enemy.

I'm sure he will not invade Canada. And I'm also sure that Canada will not become a 51st state.

But more than anything, this is just further signaling to regimes like Putin that other sovereign nations are not to be respected. His words have a huge impact around the world. People in the US laugh at this stuff. But it's not funny in the least, and it's in fact dangerous.

I'm mentioning the more than obvious fact admitting Canada as a state sinks the GOP nationally. If Canada voted in our last election, we would have President Harris, not Trump.

Bad, good, that seems like a bad thing for a republican/conservative (ostensibly) to promote?

I dunno. We'd also inherit the corruption of their governemnt, and all of its left-leaning weaknesses.

The only way I can justify the continued insistence on Canadian statehood by Trump, aside from pretending he's full of ####, is to acknowledge he doesn't plan for this to be a political problem for him, his party, or his nation. So he's either full of ####, or he's really BAD news. Either way, you really want to roll those dice?

Canada becoming the 51st state is as likely as Alaska rejoining Russia to help settle the war in Ukraine.

Trump is just shid talking for what purpose, I have no idea, other than he likes to talk smack.

It's far beneath the office of the President to spout this nonsense and is cringeworthy, but it's not something to be concerned over. Canada wouldn't join short of a military conquest which ain't in the cards.

It will be like this for the next 4 years. The Pubs will lose the House in 2026, perhaps the Senate in 2026 and most likely the presidency in 2028 because the public will be sick of all the BS from Trump.

Trump winning in 2024 will probably prove to be a pyrrhic victory for the Pubs

2025 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The problem for the pubs is, who takes over once Trump is done?

And all his cronies and the billionaire beneficiaries of his policies and the irrational Trump fanbois on this board will all step in line and start parroting that same message. Watch it happen.

They won't be able to amend the constitution to allow a 3rd term.

It's ironclad that he can't be elected again.

And at this point, he's no longer afraid of jail, because of the SCOTUS ruling in 2024. And he'll be 82. I think in 2029, we'll be swearing in a new president.

NOW....I think there will be an election in 2028. But if the Democrat wins, I expect MAGA to do their usual election-denial and try to stop the swearing in of a Democrat in January, 2029.

We will need the people to do their job, and then we'll need the Electoral College to do its job. And we'll need the courts to swat aside the usual non-sense that MAGA will bring. It won't be easy.

But I'm not worried about a 3rd Trump term. It won't happen.

If you really want to fix America, and not become emperor or dear leader, but FIX AMERICA, you'd fix Congress. I fear we have elected corruption to fight corruption and that ends badly, always.

I've said what I would do, how I'd do it, and everything else. Sure, it's a massive power play from the executive branch, but it also adheres to our Constitution. What's happening now is the failure of our government, as we've known it.

It’s the reason Trump is trying to consolidate as much power under his authority as possible, and get rid of anyone that isn’t blindly loyal to him in the federal government. He’s said before he can ignore the constitution. MAGA has already introduced a House resolution to amend the constitution so he can serve a third term. Although that route likely won’t work, he will explore all avenues to try.

Now I’m of the mindset that at the end of the day, I think there will still be enough checks and balances left after 4 years to prevent it, but that won’t stop them from trying.
