Swinney opposes new downfield rule proposal

Totally agree

Feb 23, 2015, 9:59 AM

There's an existing rule that for all intent and purposes is pretty fair. It just needs to be enforced. If they enforce the current rule more regularly you'll see the infractions drop drastically. If things continue the way they are they could set the distance to 0 yards. If it's never enforced then what does it matter?

It would give the referees a chance to make a game changing call

This is the "anti-spread offense rule" if implemented.

Should make for interesting punt returns..

Feb 23, 2015, 10:17 AM

Since OL cant get 5-10 yards down field now while the punter does that Australian Rules thing

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The refs need help and Bama' defense needs time to adjust.

Feb 23, 2015, 10:27 AM

It's just not fair for either of them right now.

Bama O Linemen are to fat and slow to get 3 yards down field. So yes, this sounds like another favored rule for the Saban's against the spread.

lets make football boring rule!!

Feb 23, 2015, 10:27 AM

Have these people ever played football? Let's tell the defense what we will do on every play at least at the one second point.
This is a horrible rule that will kill the excitement of the game.

Why mess with the ratings of the games. You will lose fans by making football boring. Might as well play rugby.

I'm All-In with Dabo! Saban just figured out how to spread his offense. This is a crazy rule that will be broken on every passing play or play action. No screen passes!

The NFL seems to be doing fine with the one yard rule.

Seems a bit of an overreaction to argue the NCAA is going to lose fans over this.

Re: lets make football boring rule!!

To me the college game is better now than ever from a fan perspective. It's popularity is at an all time high despite the economy.
I love action on both sides of the ball. Boring is my opinion. I would much rather watch a college game than a NFL game. So being like the NFL doesn't excite me.

If my understanding is correct, the reason they are proposing the rule change is based on a small sample size of plays that the (rules) committee viewed. In those plays, flags should have been thrown. … I think it's a bad precedent to start changing rules of the college game because things that were fouls weren't called. I want to be clear: I don't think college football should be allowed to have linemen running free downfield (on pass plays). But the existing rule is a good rule.

The boring part is the defenses not changing to defend the spread offenses but depending on rule changes. I personally dislike the referees throwing more flags too.

I think some of you have the wrong idea about this rule change. It won't affect nearly as much as you think.

This rule is for concepts that have developed over the last few years where inside zone run plays have a passing scheme tagged to it. For example, a zone run play to the left is called. In years past, the backside DE was left unblocked and the QB would read him. Now the backside LB is unblocked instead. If he flows too fast, the TE or slot receiver on the backside will run a hitch route to replace him. So instead of the QB running as the second option, he throws a forward pass.

The problem with that is the OL continues to block the run play. The linemen that reach to the linebackers are 3-5 yards downfield. THIS is the concept that will cease to exist.

Clemson usedbo a concept similar with sammy Watkins except it was a built in smoke screen. He caught the ball behind the LOS, so downfield blockers are legal. This play is unaffected. Also, play action passes won't be affected because the OL knows their job is to stay behind the line.

Well said.

It's only going to affect some of those plays where you see a wide open receiver and wonder how he was so open.

Probably bc the coaches taught them how to play FB, and not how to pisssss on the public streets.

Just like the speed limit

Feb 23, 2015, 10:30 AM

Everyone speeds so let's set the speed limit 10 mph lower than we want everyone to go. I'm with Dabo. Just throw a flag. This is why everyone was in such an uproar during the FSU-ND game. It was a good call but it's never called.

Re: FB Update: Swinney opposes new downfield rule proposal

Feb 23, 2015, 10:57 AM

Could someone explain this a bit more?

"The new proposal would move the distance offensive lineman are allowed to move downfield from three yards to one yard before a thrown ball crosses the line of scrimmage. This could increase penalties and slow down contests if the change is implemented"

What if all offensive lineman stay on the line rather than moving downfield, this makes it sound like no pass could be thrown?

Okay it's registered. They can't move further than that else they can set up screens.

So that would pretty much do away with wide receiver screen plays ! So who proposed this change ?

SABAN ? THIS IS SO STUPID !!!!!!!!!!!

What we do not need is more penalties. Good input Dabo***

The NCAA won't go after the cheaters, but they will sit on their A$$ with all the free time they have and figure ways to further screw up the game. Its amazing what they can come up with out of boredom!!!
