Black people are receiving racist text messages about picking cotton 'at the nearest plantation'

A little ways down in the article…..
Various Clemson University students reported receiving the text messages, prompting a public statement from the school. “These numbers have been determined to be associated with online spoofing sites.” Campus police is “actively investigating the matter and working with state partners to identify the source of the messages,” the statement reads in part.

on it I would put money on these texts being generated by foreign actors. It would not surprise me in the least if Iran and those of their ilk had a hand in it.

installed on their phones. It's practically a guarantee the CHICOMS have gathered all kinds of data from those phones - including a racial profile. Wouldn't be very hard to do and from there very easy to use that info to send these kinds of targeted messages...

I'm an idiot boomer when it comes to tech. And the first thing that came to mind was how do they know?

How are only African-Americans getting this text? Is there some algorithm thing that designates race if it just some widespread thing?

profiles generated from social media posts etc, scary they can match up that data to specific phone numbers, but most of those sites require phone numbers for sign up, so.....
