Tommy Bowden: We will never have another coach like him

At least I hope not anyway.

If being a fan since 1986 is new then I guess so. Danny spoiled me. I always knew what Clemson football could be and should be. I'm glad Dabo has brought it back. The only thing I can say for Tommy B is that he was better than Tommy West an Hatfield but that isn't much of a compliment.

Then you know how far behind we had fallen in the West days.

Both on and off the field. Our facilities, players, etc..
TB by no means was ever going to get us to where we are now, but he shed light on and started fixing facility and player issues that laid a big foundation here. The upgrade from Hatfield/West to Bowden was significant in more ways than just coaching.

It's really too bad that more Clemson folks cannot see this

Nov 28, 2017, 11:48 AM [ in reply to Then you know how far behind we had fallen in the West days. ]

While TB was very unlikely to get us past 8 to 9 wins a season and into the championship discussion, he did quite a bit for Clemson football to raise it from the lowly place it had fallen during the West days. And in the end, when he knew he was being shown the door he made the recommendation to make Dabo the interim HC....good call on his part, he knew who would be the person to lead the team onward and upward!

He's ok in my book. I've forgiven about 30 of his losses

Nov 28, 2017, 11:21 AM

because he plucked a WR coach from a real estate job and then recommended THAT guy be our interim head coach. Of all the failed efforts on his part, he came through on his replacement.

If I were Tennessee, I'd be asking Tommy if he knows a good accountant to become their new head coach.

It must be exhausting to be a fan like this.

Nov 28, 2017, 11:40 AM

Obviously we are all thrilled with where Dabo has taken us and yes, a lot of us knew we could do it. Just like about thirty or so
Other fan bases know they can do it.

Under Bowden,
Our players generally represented the school well and graduated.
We went 7-2 against USC...while they were coached by two Hall of Fame coaches.
He won 62% of his games, which is better than average at Clemson.
He took down his dad four times.
Our recruiting improved tremendously.
Our facilities improved tremendously.
When he left, he recommended a position coach to replace him.

Bowden did a fine job for Clemson and we would not be where we are today without him. I'm not looking for a statue to be put up on campus for him but maybe fans should stop taking unprovoked pot-shots at the guy.

I think Tommy Bowden deserves to be in our HOF

Nov 28, 2017, 11:57 AM

If for nothing else other than he took a chance on a real estate developer then recommended him for the HC position when he was let go.

True TB doesn't get enough appreciation

Nov 28, 2017, 12:43 PM

You might say he did everything but excel. Better than average teams, clean program, trended us up. The biggest knocks if I remember were that he always had a bad excuse for losing, like "well, half the teams in America lose every week", and his teams were WILDLY inconsistent...hence the C word.
