Today's P5 schools; that will be tomorrow's G5

Jul 7, 2022, 6:53 PM

If you are looking at schools that do not or should not be considered a P5 team in terms of "football only" who are they?
Keep in mind; UCF is a G5 school and we've seen their stats as a University scrutinized over the years. They have the size to be a p5 under the old system. But, aren't. While a school like Wake is; which I find curious! Or Duke for crying out loud.

What schools will not make the P2 or P3 cut in your opinion? Or rather who should not make it strictly talking football!

Mine are:
1. Wake - solid school academically speaking, but football speaking can they ever really compete?
2. Northwestern - I know Fitzgerald has had them in the Big 10 championship game; but the Big 10 is weak most of the time. ACC schools since 2000 have 4 member schools to play for at least 1 National Title(VT, Miami, FSU & Clemson) the Big 10 has only has Ohio St. in that time period. Weak!
3. Vanderbilt - no offense Commodores; but it's not going to happen now.
4. Duke - not a P5 program. No care for football really from the alumni/fans. Watching their game at their stadium is like being in the library with an old-school librarian. "No noise"!
5. Purdue - 2 unclaimed National titles in 31 & 43. Stadium capacity of 57K in the Big 10!!!!!! A huge commitment to football; not really.
6. Indiana - No claimed National titles. 7 all-time All-Americans. Stadium capacity of 52K - do they really care. The visitors from other Big10 schools could fill a larger stadium; which only increases their revenue. But, whatever.
7. Kansas. Some of their losses consistently are amazingly bad. Clearly, the alumni base does not put a lot of stock in foosball.
8. Oregon State - an all-time losing record of 546 w 613 l. 7 all-time All-Americans. No claimed titles. They apparently have two stadiums: one holds 43K the other holds 25K. A true commitment to football, no.
9. Rutgers. 1 claimed National Title in 1869. 3 All-Americans all-time. 6-5 all-time bowl record and an overall record of 658-671-42. Stadium capacity despite really being the closest thing NYC has to a college football team is 52K. Are they trying? Do they really care?
10. Who else?

Just my opinion to anybody who this list offends. I base it off if you have any history of trying to have sustained football success. Because I remember Kansas and Rutgers being pretty good at times. But, when one thinks about the Rich getting richer - how is it that some of these schools(calling out the Big 10 ones) are getting the best payout in the sport and still haven't been able to translate it to on-field success when the road should have been easier. Now, the road will be even tougher, what will a school like this do now?
Clemson is a small school - but has a rich football history! Passionate fans who care about football! On-field success at the highest level. So, it's not about the size of the school.

I can only chime in as to what I know, and having spent a year at Wake after spending my undergrad at Clemson...Wake should either be in the Patriot League or the Colonial, because that school has way more in common with a Bucknell, or a William and Mary than it does with Clemson.

Wake is the smallest FBS school period, I think whether G5 or P5. They have acquitted themselves well given the resource difference they face. No ill-intent toward Wake or any team/school I listed; just from a resource standpoint and a priority placed on a football standpoint - they are at a huge disadvantage that is about to widen.

I would say that Wake has punched well above its weight for decades.

If nothing else, I respect how long they have lasted, and that they have one more Football championship in their history than SCar.

That said, I don't think anyone will lose any sleep if they join a conference with more members with similar student populations.

Good Points on Wake!

They have done well for themselves for sure all things considered.

Agreed 100%. If they go to a league that's not putting them at a disadvantage resource-wise - nobody would lose sleep.

I am of the opinion the powers that be need to go ahead and create another championship! A P5 and a G5 National Champion! Much like you have FCS, Div. II and III champions. Either that or tell any school that plays college football that there can only be "ONE"! Which is crazy, right!
It's also crazy to have a stacked deck with resources other schools don't have and actually have any reasonable rationale that the less resource school can actually "consistently" compete. It's "unsporty" and crazy-thinking to not expect the larger more resource school not to win. Especially if, the smaller school "doesn't particularly care about football"!
Again, it's not just about size, it's about passion and how much you want to win too! School presidents at the above list of schools need to ask: "how much do we care about football beyond the homecoming game and it being the way to pay for the other non-revenue sports"! If their honest; they happily go to a league that is better suited for that mindset as a program and fanbase.

Immaterial and irrelevant.

Under this theoretical I would add Maryland.

Maryland is a good candidate!

What's crazy is - there are some good football players that come out of that area. I remember VT and UVA being all worried when Maryland left for the Big 10; fearing players would flock there for an opportunity to play Big 10 football.
They have an all-time winning record of 662-616-43. 1 claimed NC(1953) and one unclaimed Nat'l Championship(1951).

Their stadium was built in 1950 and apparently has really never been enlarged because the capacity is 54K.

Scar. Put them out of their misery and let them go SoCon. Think of the great annual matchups with The Citadel.

They are probably ducking The Citadel. Probably App St. as well! But, SoCon might be their "sec-speed"! The Sunbelt would still be App St, Louisiana and Coastal and every now and then Florida Gator beater Georgia Southern's to lose!

SoCon for SCar for sure!
