Just kidding - this is just one more lame opinion - mine.
I could not be happier for a guy than I am for Brad Brownell. He has worked his tail off to get things to this point, and he has done it the right way. He deserves this success and everything that goes with it. As a life long Clemson fan, I am happy and excited for Clemson basketball as well. This is a big moment and hope we keep it rolling. Fantastic job coach Brownell!
I have been highly critical of coach Brownell for some time, based on his record and the results his teams have produced. I called for his firing several times over the years, and after losing 3 straight games in very disappointing fashion heading into the NCAA Tournament, I felt he should be fired if we didn't make it past the first round of the tournament.
I stand by every bit of that, and to me it's perfectly reasonable. In my mind, there is no contradiction in any of it, and "hate" doesn't enter into it. "Best Is The Standard" is Dabo's motto, and it should be for Clemson basketball as well. "Good To Mediocre Is The Standard" is unacceptable, but that's what it has been for a long time for Clemson basketball, including the last 14 years. I understand that Basketball at Clemson is just not as important, and has never received that same level of support as football, both finacially from the university, or from fans. In my eyes, that is not an excuse for hanging your head, quietly walking away, and accepting mediocrity, which we have indisputably done. Does that lack of commitment from the university make a difference? You're dang right it does. Should that give the head coach a pass? I don't think so, at least not entirely. The head coach is the face of the program. Right or wrong, the mediocrity we have witnessed over most of the last 14 years has become "Brownell Basketball". Right or wrong, there is no way to separate him from it, other than winning big, like we are doing right now (and did just a few years ago). That's the way you change it. Good for the university for making upgrades for the basketball program a few years back, and I'm happy coach Brownell is here to benefit.
As long as "Good To Mediocre Is The Standard" is our motto, I will continue to complain. We can do better, and should expect to. Right now, however, we are in a very good place. Brownell and Clemson basketball may be over the hump. Just win, baby.

wow kiddo. So I have some experience coaching Basketball and I have disliked a lot of what "Brad" has done at a technical level. He's a nice guy, always has been. He runs a clean ship, always has. BUT . . this success doesn't change anything about my concerns. I'm happy as a lark for the success, and he gets credit for sure. But I'm not confident for consistency in these regards.

We aren't currently a mediocre program. We haven't been for quite some time.
The reality is that we've won 20+ games two years in a row. We've finished in the top third of the conference two years in a row. We are currently in the Sweet 16 for just the fourth time in program history, and the second under Brownell. Our recruiting class this year is ranked in the top 25.
Again, we aren't mediocre. Our recent success proves that. Yet I keep seeing posts here acting like we are a .500 program even though we aren't and haven't been for years.

14 years proves you wrong JK. We are a mediocre program with a mediocre coach who has happened to win 2 tourney games. I expect next year will be mediocre too. That is Brad and past times prove it.

It’s a great example of how to use recency bias and data manipulation to make a point. It’s the same guy that exaggerates a marginal dip in results over the last couple of years to justify criticism of the football program and coach so it only makes sense that he hangs his hat on only the last 2 years of basketball results to make his point here. Either that or he’s a bandwagon fan that has only been here a couple of years and unfortunately, we all know that isn’t the case.

dang good. A little better than mediocre last year. But we have been mediocre for most of Brownell's tenure; that's a fact. Certainly short of what we should aspire to.

I said a lot of the same things after our last sweet 16. I hope our results as a program will be better following this one than the last one.
Nevertheless Brad deserves the benefit of the doubt for a little while after this season. Hopefully he can continue to surround himself with the right players and coaches.
Still not sold on Brad and for good reason.

criticism. It's a fair, truthful, balanced view of reality.
Now, if we are going to compare Brownell's career to Clemson's sorry, miserable basketball history, then yes, he's done a good job. No argument there. If you want to build a shrine to him based on being better than bad, go ahead, have at it. Again, "Best" should be the standard and it has not been. That is a fact that is painfully clear and indisputable. It's easy to demonstrate, for instance ...
In Brownell's 14 years, how many conference championships do we have, either regular season or ACC Tournament championships? Big fat ZERO. in 14 years, our best reg season finish is 3rd (twice).
Until the last 2 years, our average finish was 7.5 over 12 years. That is the very definition of mediocrity. It couldn't get any more mediocre. Mid-pack.
We've only finished ranked in the top 25 once in the Brownell era. ONCE. That's it. I don't care what kind of mushrooms you are on, there is no possible way to spin that and stretch it far enough to call it "good". It's not.
So, no championships, average mid-pack conference finish, and 1 top 25 finish. Those are the facts.
Now, the last two years have been a little better; especially this year. I am happy for Brownell, and he deserves the credit. Great job working through tough times. I'd give him a raise and a short, conditional extension. "Best", or at least "excellence" should be the standard going forward, with the understanding that the past has not been good enough.
