Re: TNET: ACC adds three schools in act of desperation as college football changes

Sep 1, 2023, 1:31 PM

Good summary and I can't really argue with any of it. Washington St and Oregon St probably wind up in the Mountain West or possibly the Big12-20 but I doubt the latter.

I agree with desperation of the conference being the prime motivation. All of this becomes just a holding pattern for the final REAL RE-organization that will take place at some point in the future.

Clemson should take immediate steps to leave the ACC as soon as possible after this idiotic move. Exactly what portion of the Atlantic coast are these schools in? Who wants to fly anywhere near the People’s Republic of Left Wing Kalifornia?
This is asinine.

Sep 1, 2023, 6:45 PM

The day our Tigers played Stanford? Quite a day. I remember it well. A movie was filmed at that game and I also saw the movie a few months later. I bet many of you did also.
Jacksonville Gator Bowl. I can’t remember the exact year boy it was in the late 80’s I think,

I think Dabo has a connection with Stanford in some way.
I remember the coach being at a practice at Tigertown.

The city of SF, which is the major metro area for both Cal and Stanford, is falling like a meteor.

The ongoing (& accelerating) rate of non violent crime is causing retailers to either close or relocate out of SF. Restaurants, to my understanding, have not been closing at the same speed. China Town and Fisherman’s Wharf are still good places to go. Still too much human waste of the brown variety all over the city sidewalks. The army of homeless people contribute this new feature to SF.

As recently as 10 years ago, SF area would have been one of the best possible long distance venues for a FB road trip. No more.

The ACC will probably add the other 2 schools if two or three of us announce we're leaving soon. They will then have somewhat of a block with 4 west teams, SMU and ND.

Sep 1, 2023, 1:43 PM

A few of the reasons.
1. The cost:
a. For the teams.
b. For the fans!
2. Less fans will travel across the country.
3. Because of distance, it dilutes the rivalry that college sports brings.
4. It’s the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Pacifuc/Atlantic Coast Conference.

This is so stupid! Adding Pacific coast schools to an Atlantic Coast league.

Adding Notre Dame would make sense but not those Calif schools.

I would replace "desperation" with "stupidity"

Good take on this David. I agree with everything you said and yes it was desperation and the schools with strong Olympic sports wanted this. But the thing that has been swept under the rug so to speak and hardly anyone is talking about i Notre Dame got a vote(thanks again John Swofford). Also ND takes money away from the ACC and as far as know does not give back in return from revenue from their nice tv contract.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

President Barker at Clemson led the ND charge - so if we

What would you expect from a catholic institution? If we're not going to leverage Notre Dame to get to where we want to go, then it's time to part ways with them. Let Notre Dame remain truly independent and see how that works out for them.

Sep 1, 2023, 2:17 PM

I mean if the ACC was going to add the two of the PAC4 would it not made more sense to pick up the other two also? That way there would have been regional games with those four and SMU. The eastern teams would not have to travel to the West Coast nearly as often. Just a thought.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: ACC adds three schools in act of desperation as college football changes

Sep 1, 2023, 9:09 PM

Neither Washington State nor Oregon State are easy to get to. Both are away from the redwood and Douglas Fir forest regions of the Pacific Coast. Not an especially noteworthy road trip for the wad of money and time spent on such a distant road trip.

Thank goodness the ACC hasn’t been stoooopid enough to invite these two … yet.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

In fairness to the P12 commish, he delivered a contract last

Sep 1, 2023, 2:29 PM

fall to the school presidents that they passed on, and the B12 took it from ESPN as they offered essentially the same deal. Now 4 of their teams took the b12 money, with UW and Oregon in a good long term spot and taking similar money for the short term, and the rest are worse off financially. This is on the P12 Presidents more than him.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: ACC adds three schools in act of desperation as college football changes

Sep 1, 2023, 2:30 PM

No surprise. It is hard to expect a league commissioner to negotiate with determination when his league or important pieces of it will diminish or end his employment.

In the end there is plenty of blame to pass around. Any school or league that signs onto anything that lasts until 2036 is nuts.

So often in life we get what we deserve.

Re: TNET: ACC adds three schools in act of desperation as college football changes

Sep 1, 2023, 2:31 PM

The only thing that makes any sense at all is to move forward SOON with the "real reorganization" as someone already mentioned. The schools have to act together (not every man for himself!) and work with TV (together) and separate football for those that want in (Dabo says 54) and set up reginal divisions and share revenue across the board. The others can still have a playoff system just like the other divisions do now.
Of there are problems to resolve such as the SE region would be absolutely loaded with depth compared to any other region. Not only would that region (aka the old SEC plus, CLemson, FSU and Miami be more attractive to TV but you also would have teams with 3 or more losses regularly win the "division." The NFL playoff system seems to deal with that however so college could do that as well.

Then you put everyone else back where the below for the other sports where you have your regional rivals, conference champs and Natty's. Just like the "good old days...."
It is really not rocket science- somebody just needs to do it!

PS - I know, some are saying what about basketball since it is big money BUT unlike football where the NCAA has failed miserably, the NCAA still HAS the tournament which is their undisputed cash cow!

Back when SMu was at its zenith in cheating and had Eric Dickerson and Craig James sharing the backfield, nobody came to the games. The only time they had fans was when they played Texas or A$M and the fans then were Longhorns or Aggies. Even in Dallas nobody gives a rip about SMU.
The same is true of Stanford and Cal. Nobody cares about their teams. Cal is too liberal and liberals hate football and Stanford is too brainy and they think football is beneath them. Just bad moves all the way around.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: ACC adds three schools in act of desperation as college football changes

Sep 1, 2023, 9:13 PM

SMU is the dumbest of the three bad decision invitees for joining the ACC.

The SMU thingy still doesn’t make Cal and Stanford look good.

Their value statements: We are not as bad as SMU.

David Hood as usual your insights are keen and balanced and you were pretty blunt here, rightly so. The ACC commissioner watched as the two other big conferences acted decisively. Don’t know where this all goes from here but thank you David for your great reporting. David Hood for ACC Commissioner!

What a cowardly move by the ACC. I'm disgusted. These 3 schools weaken the ACC football product. I can't wait until we get out of this conference and get into a real powerhouse conference where we belong. This is a joke.
