Rumors

Dec 5, 2022, 7:21 AM

So here the rumors of DJ leaving are given some print. I don't hate him. I'm gravely disappointed. But every QB we get can't be deshaun or Trevor I know, and I love Dabo and what he has brought Clemson, some of which is Best is our Standard, and DJ wasn't that. Cade seemed to cure all our offensive ills. For that I am at the least, temporarily grateful. We shall see against UT, and I have much more hope than for quite some time. Merry Christmas Tiger fans! I got mine early, on the third series.

Finally, we got to see Cade playing significant time!
I wish he had come in for the second half of the usc game.
We could have been a competitor for the CFP, but for now focus on the Orange Bowl.

It is another new day for Clemson Football! Feels Great again!

Go Tigers, Beat Tennessee!

I just don’t get why Dabo still doesn’t want to see it!

Dec 5, 2022, 9:58 AM

Why is he being so stubborn and refusing to admit he made a mistake, that he should have put Cade in earlier - MUCH earlier - than the ACCCG. Literally everyone could see after last season that DJU was a bust. I will admit the new look DJ that came out early in the season gave me a brief ray of hope, but by late in the season he had severely regressed. He just couldn’t run Clemson’s offense effectively. When Cade came in during the Syracuse game and “gave us a spark”, why wasn’t that the “passing of the baton” moment? He was obviously a better QB, yet Dabo still has “no regrets” about leaving him on the bench vs. SCar?! I love Dabo as much as anyone, and I hope he sticks around for a long, long time, but… Come on! Dabo is right about one thing though: We may not have gotten to the ACCCG without DJ, but we never would have won the ACCCG without Cade! Yeah so we wouldn’t be going to the Orange Bowl without DJ either; but that’s because we’d be CFP-bound if only he had started Cade weeks ago! Why is Dabo being so hard-headed and getting so defensive over this QB situation? I just don’t get it! SMH.

I do appreciate the class DJ has brought with him, and I really hope he can find a decent fit with a school out West that needs an game manager QB. Wish him nothing but the best in his next endeavor! Thanks for falling in love with Clemson and seeing what the rest of us here love about it; there’s something in those hills.

I totally agree. I would actually respect Dabo more if he'd just be honest and admit his mistake of sticking with DJ far too long. I don't get his stubbornness about that at all! And it may have been the best thing for DJ too. He seems to have been able to accept and deal with it (at least publicly) because it would have been the right thing to do for the team. We can't say for sure that with Cade we'd won the USC game, but we can for sure say our chances would have been MUCH better! I have never seen such a dismal QB performance (and OC for that matter).

The eye test doesn't lie. Cade is quicker, has more energy, and he's MUCH more accurate. Players around him feed off that. It's just so obvious.

That said, strangely, I think it's better we didn't make the playoffs. I'm not sure if Cade's ready for a D like the Dawgs, our receivers sure aren't, and our DBs would have been torched. Let's now see if we can clobber the Vols like USC did. I sure hope so.

I agree with much of what you said, but I am not sure about the WR's. Ngata could and should come back. This was his first healthy year, but he was not outstanding and his draft numbers will be low. If we believe the hype about Randall in the Spring, he could be a force. Beau Collins should have a great year. Antonio Williams will only get better, and Cole Turner appears to be ready to follow the family tradition of way out-performing their ratings. Assuming our three incoming sign, that could be a really good position for next year.

I think Klubnik would have been enough to turn the USC game around and we would probably be in the playoffs, but I do not think this is our year to play the 'Dawgs. I think it will be better to beat the Vols and take on the 'Dawgs next year.

Finally, DJ is a great young man and a great athlete, but he gets lost in the speed of upper eschalon collegiate football. He will not play in the NFL. He has a great arm and Clemson baseball is poised for a great year. This is the Spring where he should change sports. We could use a pitcher with a 95 mph fastball.

For the past two years, TigerNet “replies” has been filled with all of our second-guessing and complaining about Dabo and Streeter sticking with DJ. Now what will we write about? I want to offer these thoughts about why Dabo stuck with DJ so long: (1) Last year, the backup was Phommachanh. He was not going to set the world on fire if he replaced DJ; (2) This year, despite our frustration with Dabo’s decision to not pass the baton sooner to Cade, I have to acknowledge that Dabo Swinney is an unusual head coach at the elite level because he actually cares about these kids; winning is not everything to Dabo, and I applaud that (well, except for the colossal blunder not to pull DJ early in the S.C. game). Dabo really cares about DJ as a young man coming into his own as an adult; (3) Clearly, Dabo is a huge believer in Streeter’s abilities and judgment, so you gotta wonder if Streeter was a major influence in sticking with DJ too long. But when a head coach is paid more than $10 million a year, you expect him to overule his assistant coaches when they are clearly getting it wrong in pushing for a particular player. All that said, I think Clemson is very lucky to have Dabo Swinney as head coach. Now the big question is how will he respond to the new landscape in elite college football, created by the Portal and by NIL. He better be looking over his shoulder at Shane Beamer, who is using the Portal to transform the long-mediocre football program at South Carolina—not to mention how Lincoln Riley quickly transformed the program at Southern Cal. That program now joins Clemson, Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State and Michigan as perennial contenders for the College Football Playoffs. And one other thang: Go Tiguhs! We got our swagger back, and good times are ahead!

The move to keep us in the playoff after the beat down in South Bend was to switch QBs, win out convincingly and present the case that the current team was better that the team under DJ and we could have been a rebuilt team on the upswing with new leadership that not only has the record, but can pass the “eye test.”

I love Dabo and he knows how to win football games way better than I do. I hope he stays around for as long as he wants. But he made a mistake here. This wasn’t a football mistake as much as it was an HR mistake.
