TNET: Elliott knows offense has room to grow, hopes the growth starts up front

Elliott knows offense has room to grow, hopes the growth starts up front

The perimeter blocking has to get better. The interior blocking has to get better. The wide receivers have to be better. DJ Uiagalelei has to be better. For Tony Elliott’s offense, the entire group has to play better if the 25th-ranked Tigers are going to beat Boston College this weekend. Full Story »

While I mostly agree with what he is saying in principle, here is where I have heartache with it. They keep saying they need to find the right 5..BS! You had the spring, you had fall camp, and now we are going into game 5 and we don't have the "Right combination " figured out? What the actual heck? At this point you should have LONG since known who you had and what they could do. That is coaching and evaluation of talent! Can they continue to gel as a unit for get better? Sure and PLEASE DO! But at this point they should have it locked down on who is who. But it is also one of the main reasons that I think it's ALWAYS a bad thing when Freshman are even considered to be starters on the O line. Give me a bunch of 4th year Junior, 5th (Or this seasons 6th) year seniors on the O Line.. fully grown, 325+ Grown MEN. Not high rated, high upside kids that are popping pimples and still pooping out cake from their senior prom! This has infuriated me for YEARS. Wisconsin, Nebraska, Iowa...they all take 2, maybe 3 star kids. walk on even and in 4+ years have turned them into run blocking bulldozers. We get guys that every program wants and they all go undrafted and could clear a lane through a bunch of kittens. Best IS the standard, yet in this we have repeatedly underperformed. For YEARS. Enough with the "Aww shucks" Enough with the "We didn't expect that" That's what ALL other team's will try to do. But heck, now they don't even have to surprise you Tony.. the word is out.. What ya gonna do? Wait..I'm a prophet.. Next week we hear once again, "Still trying to find the right combo"... SMH. Go Tigers!

What magic wand do you think we have that makes Jr/Sr O-linemen appear out of thin air? And even if we had enough for a starting 5, how many plays do you think they can go with no depth? They would be injured halfway through the season and you would just now be inserting freshmen and entering into the same scenario we have now.

Players get injured, graduate, go pro, enter the transfer portal, etc. Sometimes you are going to end up with an extremely young team. That’s what we have, and no coach has a magic wand to prevent that. It happens to every team from time to time.

This is why I believe college teams should err on the side of having more OL than they need. The development time is so long and scouting them and knowing who will be a star is so difficult. At, let's say running back, if you have to start a true freshman you may be ok. At OL you really want some veterans who have learned the blocking schemes. Georgia always has a good OL. They take more OL as a proportion of their 85 scholarship allotment.

Very good point. We need a coach that can develop these O-Lineman, even if not starting from high pedigree. Shame we have (Tnet will correct me if I am wrong) 11 open scholarships right now...could use a few of those spots perhaps for corn-fed boys on the OL.

Not sure what you are referring to as open scholarships. We may have 11 left for next year's recruiting class. I don't know what is left with our current commits, but we will always use the 85 scholarships even of we pass them on to walk on.

I don't think that's the best idea. If OL don't pan out, they are just a waste of scholarships. Recruit more big DL and TEs and convert extra to OL is the way it's been done in the past by successful programs such as the Hurricanes of yesteryear.
Sure, you want to have plenty of depth in the OL, but I like the idea of having scholarship numbers that can possibly help out elsewhere.

However, I will say I appreciate you using actual thinking skills and talking football instead of the whine mode that most of the other posters are in right now.

I believe there are either six or seven walk ons given scholarship. While that’s wonderful for these kids, it’s not a sustainable way to manage a top-tier program. I don’t keep record of the year to year walk on scholarship totals but don’t think this is an unusual scenario.
I think any reasoned person could agree we have too many scholarships at some positions and too few at others. Like Ryan, we should sign at least three OL per recruiting class, along with a balance of signing specific positions on the OL (three Guards is not ideal for example). I’ve been a Clemson fan since the early 70s and can almost list on one hand what I would consider a quality OL since 2000. It is consistently the least valued position for Clemson coaches for whatever reason.
There are so many issues on this years offense that pinning it totally on any one area is irrational. However, given how the best teams are typically those strongest along the lines, I would prefer to have one too many OL-DL and take it from any of the other position groups. CB is the next most critical in my view.

If you don't understand HOW it is done then you have likely not been involved in coaching, recruiting, leadership, or the military, but hey, great effort at snark. As to how it's Is done, that's far from a magic wand. It's time taken over years. Expecting lineman to come in and be major contributors their 1st year or Is 2 is insanity. You build for depth and development, NOT for day one starters. The sheer fact that we are even having a conversation about freson the O line speaks volumes to many of us. But hey, what do I know since all those games I played in were just MADDEN. SMH.

It's not a simple fix...

Oct 1, 2021, 8:56 AM [ in reply to Ok, this is where I cry Shenanigans! ]

if that was the case, it would have been fixed already.

There are a number of issues that have to be worked-out. It all starts with the fact that Clemson is playing with 9 of 11 new starters on that side of the ball and that youth, inexperience, the corresponding mistakes, and at times a lack of focus has manifest itself into the product we've seen on the field.

While I think DJ has the potential to be a great QB, he is not a dual threat QB like DW and TL. He is a pro-style QB and, therefore, he is not going to flourish in the same scheme that TE designed for DW and TL. It's jut not going to happen. The staff has to create and call plays to take advantage of the strengths/skills that DJ does have.

The game is moving really fast for DJ right now so they need to slow it down for him by calling plays that don't require him to think so much or progress through too many reads. He's a first year starter and he doesn't have the experience yet against the variety of coverages and looks defenses are giving him in an attempt to confuse him.

The offense will get better but there are probably going to be some more growing pains along the say.

Re: It's not a simple fix...

Oct 1, 2021, 1:19 PM

This is what’s frustrating about not just Elliott, but Streeter, Caldwell, Grisham, CJ, all of them, they’ve been observing DJ for how long? They’ve known his strengths/weaknesses. They’re paid to come up with the offensive scheme to make it work around DJ and they haven’t. The fans are all talked down to and told “He’s not Deshaun. He’s not Trevor.”, but Elliott & company try to make him play like Deshaun and Trevor, and he clearly can’t.

The coaches have certainly implied...

Oct 1, 2021, 1:30 PM

that DJU practices much better than he's been playing but, for some reason, what they see from him in practice isn't translating to the field on gameday.

It's not just DJU. It's A LOT of other things too.

Re: TNET: Elliott knows offense has room to grow, hopes the growth starts up front

I guess what bothers me is he seemed to put very little of the blame on himself and the coaching staff. Even when asked if he would have to change the offense to make up for deficiencies he put it on the execution of the line and RB's.

I have heard coach speak for 4 weeks saying there really wasn't a problem. Now when I want to hear coach speak, "It's on me. I have to have these guys better prepared. I have to put them in a position to succeed." I don't. This is a time that I feel a coach is supposed to accept the blame whether he believes it or not. I didn't get that with that interview.

The QB release time needs to improve, the QB needs to look off DB's, QB counter runs need to be schemed, the middle of the field & TE's need to be engaged to keep the Defense honest, the routes need to less than 100% predictable - the good news is there are so many opportunities to improve.

our poor roster management approach with O Line, this article is it.

We also need Grisham to crack down on the lack of perimeter blocking at WR.

Poor OL roster mgt & dev forever. Chad demanded WR blocking

Oct 1, 2021, 12:31 PM

Clemson typically has top tier performing skill players & DLs, but never has a top-tier performing OLs. At best the OLs have been decent, like in 2018.

When Chad Morris came in, he demanded WR blocking and benched guys who wouldn't do it. Even after he left, that attitude seemed to linger for a while but seems to have worsened, with this year being the worst.

Four games into the season; actually I'm not counting S.C State) and all he has to say is he "knows" and he "hopes"!
I wonder if he "knows" what crappy bowl game we might get after any "hope" goes out the door of even beating Boston College.

Give it time and let's see. Check out the last 8 years including this one...what is different with the two low productivity years (including this one)? No DW or TL that's the difference in having an not having an "eraser" as they call it. Did you watch JAX last night? Even though Trevor is struggling to hit his stride in the NFL you can still see he is in command of the offense. We don't have him or ETN to turn chicken poop into chicken salad anymore. Let's hope some leaders appear that can do that - it's been made clear that the offense is not going to change so its up to the players.

Did he ever mention that perhaps a large part of the issue is coaching? You've got 4 and 5 star recruits but they don't appear to have been coached correctly. Don't tell me stars don't matter....if Nancy Tate can take their 2 and 3 stars and coach them up better than 4/5 stars but stars don't matter then we may as well recruit 2/3 stars because stars don't matter, right?
