Shouldn't one of those imply pounding the rock with a heavy, bruiser back - like Mafa perhaps? The other should be a 'get the ball in space and watch them suffer' - like Shipley perhaps? Why does our play calling seem to reverse the two roles?

Lightning. They have not a tenth of the talent of Davis and Spiller. Davis (Thunder) had far more breakaway ability than even Shipley, much less Mafah. And Spiller (Lightning) was a Unicorn, with his combination of straight line speed and moves. Shipley couldn't catch his shoelace!

Mafah and Shipley are good running backs. But, they are nothing special. Watch other games, and you will see plenty of others just as good. You could not say that about the combo of Davis and Spiller back in the day. That is why it WAS special.

or playing calling isn't helping at all.

I can't count how many times Shipley has been met in the backfield when it being handed off to him anywhere near the center.

Our interior line is horrible at run blocking. But Ship also trips super easily.

It's just a lack of talent across the board.
