Thoughts on DC / Wes Goodwin..

I do hope we get a new DC someone with Fire & intensity and one heck of a recruiter and can coach Linebackers.
Almost equally, I would like to see Wes Goodwin stay and simply move back to an Analyst role. I honestly think that's a perfect spot for him.

He’s not staying. Would you want to stay somewhere where you’ve been demoted?

Clemson is still on the hook for his salary, so if he likes being at Clemson why not? He didn't seem to enjoy being in the lime light either. Not sure he'd want to be a DC any more.

Who said he wanted to be a dc in the first place? I think he was perfectly happy working behind the scenes, and it fits his personality.

I agree. Wes is a great analyst (for those who don’t know, both BV and Bruce Arians have raved about what he can do and it is why Dabo gave him a shot at DC), but the DC role wasn’t for him. It’s like being great at what you for work, but being a bad manager. Happens to a lot of people and Wes just doesn’t have the personality or on field experience to be a coach.

We may know shortly if DC was for him...because of DJU and Dabo having a national brand fetish we suffered through a lot...nobody has a Watson & Lawrence back to back...we did but paid a heavy price with QBs in between! I think that to win a natty you must have a couple of good RBs, a great passing attack that can turn on the jets when necessary and a great Kicker...a good defense with stopping power is a necessity (we had that and they were worn down by 3 years of offensive failures) Wes Goodwin did not have BVs personality on the sideline and BV has found out the hard way that he is not a head coach...hope Dabo goes back to being one and stops trying to be a rock star...a long trip from Alabama...he belongs at Clemson..do what's right not what the Marxist media tells you to do!

IMO, we were missing a strong side DE to set that edge all year. That caused LBs to lose gap focus when they were shaded to shore up that edge all year. Wes was a man down. Hope Heldt can stop those simple off tackle right runs next year.

Same , I actually think he adds a lot of value in the booth and can complimented by a very good DC that can get the most out of his players and better at developing talent… I just wonder if that’s something he would do that would have to be a tough pill to swallow unless he knows he can have stability in that role at Clemson… where as he goes somewhere else as DC and it doesn’t work and he’s fired, he’s more than likely right back in that role somewhere smaller. I would def love to see us keep him on staff.

I’d love to know what the consensus is with the fanbase on that hire if true… I mean I wouldn’t be that mad if they knew how well Venables and Goodwin worked before but it’s a better situation with Venables being the defensive guy he is… it’s almost like being named the OC under Sark or something.

Analyst does seem to be a better fit but staying is not a good idea. It’s like trying to be friends with a girl you dated a couple of years but did not work out.

Agreed. Venables needed a “get back guy”… Wes needed a “get up guy” .. the difference was fire and ice ..

I'd like to see him at OU. He's got potential to be a good dc, we just don't have the time for him to learn on the job with a potential Natty team coming back. Being directly under Venables could take him to the next level though.
