Hoa drama update.

Some guy has had a construction dumpster in his driveway for a month or more. He's gotten two notices. Beware.
The lawsuit by the bored, retired, homeowner with nothing better to do, has finally been officially filed. Despite a letter in his mailbox, and an email, and a Facebook post, he claims he was not duly notified of the HOA meeting. They now have added calling, and knocking on his door as well.
He's also (and this is the key) ticked he has to pay $125 a year for a pool fee. ###? And here's the rub. The pool needed repairs and the HOA hired a company that ripped them off. Did crappy work. They're working to get that resolved, but are also adding money in the event the repairs are not PROPERLY made, and another contractor has to come in (they tried t save a buck). If that's the case, they plan to sue the contractor to recover, but in the meantime need funds available to make sure the pool opens next year. So they're double on the pool budget this year, which is fine. But Fuddy Dudd up the street ain't having it. He has filed for a refund of $125 to be issued by the HOA, and the HOA has said that's fine, no pool next year.
Side note: We moved in here in 2012, and HOA fees, WITH THE PANDEMIC, are still 30% lower than in 2012. The builder was ripping everyone off, and when the neighbors took control of the HOA they saved a TON of money.
Just another example of:

It is thankless work. I have learned a lot about the power builders/developers have in these situations.
I have also had confirmed the sinful nature of human beings, how petty they can be, and how easy it is to fall down a slippery slope.
I thought I was doing a good thing by volunteering to serve. My motivation was to be a voice that helps maintain the 'hood and keep property values up.
Boy was I naive.

Why would a builder run/manage an HOA?

That's pretty far outside of their wheelhouse. Build some shit and gtfo never to be heard from again, unless you built the shit terribly and have to come back to fix it under warranty or lawsuit.

Ours just turned ownership over to the HOA. I think they manage it at first

before the hood gets to a certain build-out. Can be YEARS if the hood is phased. I've been here two years and the homeowners have had control of the HOA for just a couple months. Our house is one of the newer ones, some people have been here 4-5 years, I believe.

Correct. In our situation the HOA owns some roads, the builder others, but the

kicker is that the builder has control because there are still more lots they own compared to the number of homeowners in the 'hood.
Pray your 'hood gets built out quickly.

(aside from OV/Old Mt Pleasant) that doesn't have an HOA.
I could never again live in the land of timing how long my garage door is open, or getting fined for leaving my garbage can outside too long.
I can't think of one house in my hood that abuses the no hoa thing. Imagine that..people governing themselves without needing someone else to do it.

others, were like this veteran with PTSD whose therapy was to chop wood and he stacked his wood in his yard till it looked like a fort. Our agent told us it hurt our ability to sell our old home because of how they neighborhood looked when driving in. The house did not show well because the neighborhood did not show well.
