Players being worn down is a new phenomenon!

A few years before I played at Clemson, when dinosaurs roamed he earth, all players had to go both ways. No subs except for injuries. Then, in the early 60's they passed the rule where coaches could sub 2 players on defense, usually the QB and one other. Then platoon football began in the 60's with offensive and defenses teams as we have today. I don't remember ever hearing a player ask to be taken out because of fatigue when they played both ways. I guess they did, I just never witnessed it. Today, we have to rotate players every few plays or they get worn down. Why is that? Are they not in shape? Is the off season conditioning not up to snuff? Often wondered about why we need to have so many subs so early in games, whereas in the old days, the same 11 guys played the entire game? Any thoughts??

Bigger, faster athletes.
More wide open offensive schemes.
Far more plays per game.

That reinforces an important difference.

Linemen average around 300 lbs now.

They're going to get tired more easily running more plays carrying more body weight.

The smaller guys get more energy taken out of them from the bigger guys hitting them a lot.

Re: My Dad graduated in 1955. He played at 6'3, 195 - what position? Lineman?

you made a good point, I'm not that old but my opinion is it is a combination of guys truly aren't that tough anymore, but it isn't all there fault......they are constantly reminded by pro athletes and sports shows........"take a break" dont play in the bowl........sit out to protect your "next" contract, protect your mental health etc etc.

I'm not poo-pooing on all those things, i do think in some individual cases they are real, but the point is they are also abused......how many nba players have you seen sit out the better part of a whole season with "soreness"......medical test literally pick up no real diagnosis and they sit out 50 games getting paid 30 million a year.

So point blank most people are not near as tough anymore due to social conditioning and the obsession with "future contracts" that the here and now is lost.

I think they found more ways to squeeze everything out of the tube faster.

A number of factors

Back in the early 60s most linemen were around 250 lbs and many guards or centers under that. Now most are 300 lbs or more. Lugging that 50 lbs around wears you down or you have to be give or take in 20% better shape.

Many defenses rotate linemen based on the weight factor wearing players out, and also given down and distance they will put their best pass rushers in regardless of their normal position.

Defensive backs are also often rotated based on down and distance (nickle and dime packages). Clemson often rotates receivers particularly if they have run a deep pattern. Fresh legs is not an announcer's
phrase, but a real factor. If you have the depth to rotate people, it keeps legs fresh. It also keeps players involved and mentally engaged.

As much as I hate to reference Dean Smith he once said "You don't have depth if you don't play it."

That’s because 11 fresh on each side of the ball is better than 11 playing both ways. There’s a much larger pool of athletes to pull from. My high school had to play iron man because we only had around 90 per graduating class. I never came off the field. The rare gem can play both ways and outperform the rest. Everyone is a super star at the college level. Top 5% of all players. The pros are the top 1% of that 5%.

Same reason they can’t hit the QB, or hit anyone with their head, and don’t wear leather helmets.

Dean Smith said you can't rest a player after he tires.

Actually, player fatigue is uncommon but if you watch games all the way though a defense that isn't rotated in and out will get worn down. That's why when teams are over match they just want to go into the 4th qtr with a close score.

However, fatigue isn't the reason Dabo subs early and often.

1. The bench is the safe zone, no one ever got injured on the bench so the more bench time a starter gets over a season the less the probability he is injured.

2. Those who rotate in to sub for starters desperately need the playing time. Not just so they can develop for when they might be starters but so they can develop so they can be good backups later in the season. Forbid that starters get hurt and the bench has to replace them.

3. If a kid does his best according to the system laid out before and he becomes decent at his position he deserves a chance to show what he can do on the field. Seldom are starters sat when the backup isn't proven to be a viable alternative.

4. Dabo's system attract kids who may not be starters but want the opportunity to develop with the knowledge that as soon as they are ready for action their numbers will be called.

I'm sure those more familiar with football then I can offer more and maybe better reasons to sub early and often.

I see you're point. How much did you weigh (or the avg weight of each player)?

How much time was allowed between plays? Were players running the 100 around 10 sec?

But I guess the main question is, if the school wins the National Championship, did the school make millions of dollars?

Not sure you (or your teammates) were 100% by the 4th qtr. And that's what the teams need EACH qtr. (now a days).

(Wild Hogg, thank you for for being a Clemson Tiger. I wished that I had seen you play).

Go Tigers!

All the tough guys on here can meet up and play a game. We can run some tests during each quarter to see if you are fatigued.

I’m guessing mostly heart attacks and strokes by third down.

How big were Benny Cunningham and Jim Stuckey compared to today? We were smaller in the early 80’s except for William, and he would be an average sized lineman today. In college Perry wasn’t as big as Peter Woods but it’s an interesting comparison.
