I'm guessing he understands that if he follows up on his threat regarding using Nuclear weapons on a Nuclear state assisting Ukraine with ballistic missiles, then there would be no more Russia...of course, there's a good chance there would be no more Earth either.

It’s actually probably the best time to provide the additional help. Putin is not stupid and isn’t going to start WWIII…especially since he assumes Trump will withdraw the additional help and try to broker a Russia friendly deal when he gets in office in a couple of months. In the meantime, we get to weaken Russia a little more and maybe kill some North Korean’s in the process. Who knows, maybe Biden and Trump are playing good cop/bad cop…you know some of that 3D chess you guys drone on about.

This is hardly the first time Russia has threatened nukes. It's their go-to whenever we do something they don't like.
Vladimir Putin is a sociopath - possibly even a primary psychopath - who has repeatedly demonstrated megalomaniacal traits. He loves (misquoting) history and constantly compares himself to Ivan the Great.
Guys like that are completely incapable of anything beyond self-interest, and Putin knows he'd be the first target in any nuclear exchange. He's also aware we know where he is at all times. (He knows this because our ambassador to Russia apparently handed him a transcript of a super-secret meeting he and his top staff had had prior to the war's start, from some buried James Bond Villain underground bunker he apparently thought there was no way our satellites or hackers could penetrate.)
Also, for all Russia's incessant nuclear saber-rattling, it's an open question how many of Russia's nukes actually still work. Some, undoubtedly. But the problem was, after the Soviet Union fell, Russia completely stopped maintaining their strategic missile forces, which are of course, in underground silos. And the first thing that happens when you dig a hole in the ground is, it eventually fills up with water. When Western arms inspectors got into Russia in the late '90's, they found rocket after rocket rusting away in their launch tubes, most of them half-submerged.
How many of those has Russia since repaired? Given the truly epic amount of grift and corruption we saw with Russia's regular military - I mean, three-quarters of their tanks had apparently had their electronics and reactive armor ripped out in the decades after the Wall fell and sold on the black market - I wouldn't bet that it's a ton of them.

I'm also have little confidence in this current admin to handle such a challenge--one that requires quick response--correctly. And even less confidence in the next one that will just appease Putin.

My main concern is North Korea and especially China eventually getting involved. I don’t think a world war is likely. Still a cause of concern though.
Zelenskyy said himself that he is looking forward to the next administration coming in and getting a peace deal done next year.

I know you really want a nuclear war so you can blame it on the Biden admin

but remember, trump said he would end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours of his election, claimed to talk to Putin about the matter, Putin said he didn't, then showed a bunch of nudes of his wife on state TV, while his top intelligence official made a press statement that Donald needed to "live up to his obligations". In the following days Gabbard, Gaetz, and Pete Hegseth were nominated for cabinet position; a potential Russian asset, a sociopathic, cocaine addled pedophile, and a white supremacist and massagist with absolutely no leadership experience to run a billion-dollar agency.
Did I miss anything?

Trump never claimed to talk to Putin. That was a BS Washington post story. If you believe Tulsi Gabbard is a Russian asset you’re just an idiot. Which I already knew because all you do on here is repeat Rachel Maddow.
