All of the comments, and the most obvious isn't seen. IF YOU SPEND THE SAVINGS, THEN NOTHING IS SAVED. Spend it on transgender study scholarships or ballistic missiles, doesn't matter. BOTH ARE SPENDING.

Little piggies at the trough don't care about debt or deficits.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Technically, it's not even saved being used to pay down the debt.

We literally CAN NOT truly save, like most families and businesses do.

If I cut my Hulu service, and use that savings to pay down my credit card, that is still NOT SAVING anything.

And which side is having a hissy fit about some potentially wasteful spending getting cut? Don't think it's the Trumpers. Personally they could get rid of a whole lot more than they ever will and I'd be ok with it. Anxiously awaiting a Democrat to run on a cutting spending and reducing the deficit platform but I won't hold my breath.

Does anyone agree that the defense budget "desperately needs an increase"?

It defies all reason.

Defense spending by country, per Wikipedia:

1. USA $916 billion
2. China $296 billion
3. Russia $130 billion
4. India $83.6 billion
5. Saudi Arabia $75.8 billion
6. UK $74.9 billion
7. German $66.8 billion
8. Ukraine $64.8 billion
9. France $61.3 billion
10. Japan $50.2 billion
11. South Korea $47.9 billion
12. Turkey $40.5 billion
13. Italy $35.5 billion
14. Australia $32.3 billion
15. Poland $31.6 billion
16. Israel $27.5 billion

and on and on. Obviously we have our issues with China and Russia, but otherwise it's literally dozens of countries before we get to Iran at 26 with $10.3 billion.

How can a country that is separated from nearly all true enemies by enormous oceans, bordered by a very friendly Canada and a not-so-powerful Mexico, with strong relationships with nearly all the other large spending countries, "desperately need" more money? We literally spend over three times as much as the next largest spender and more than the next nine largest spenders combined. And Russia is spending way more than usual because they are USING their military in a very costly war.

I think if the Department of Defense wants an increase they'll need to pass a single audit first. They have failed seven in a row.

But take it from one of the hundreds of entities in that budget who routinely "misplace" millions of dollars.

Perhaps they can take a budget that is as much as the next nine countries combined and allocate it in a more effective manner, rather than ask for more money.

It's not really $900B. That figure has some extra stuff in it. More like $750B.

But the military needs lessons just like the Federal Government in spending wisely and cutting bureaucracy.

The number of administrivia regulations is out of control.

An area where I think we should spend more money is Sober Living. All these people go to rehabs, but when they get out they don't have a stable sober environment to go to quite often. 40k rehab through insurance, but a 1500 dollar sober living for a month of transition isn't covered. Keeping these addicts sober would save money imo. I bring it up due to paying for a nephew for a place to go. Most don't have that option.
