Why wouldn't Dabo like this? Seems like this would allow him to put players who would otherwise be walk-ons on scholarship.

The main reason for 105 is for Tier 1 programs to stockpile talent to keep it away from the other 100+ schools that are trying to stay competitive.
The secondary tactic is to further defund smaller programs that don't have the same TV contracts.
It fosters the rich get richer environment that suits the Tier 1 programs and conferences (Power 2).

No I think it is more in response to the expanded playoffs. You need deeper rosters to survive injuries even though there’s no comparison to P2 starters and 3rd stringers. They are probably eyeing 6 years of eligibility too after having all the 6 and 7 year COVID guys. They figure it improves the product for the 25 teams who want to play this new version of college football.

The thing about Walk On's is that they have to work harder than anyone on the team to make themselves better to earn a scholarship, and I do think that is a good thing for them, and sometimes a nugget like a Hunter Renfrow will come out of the Walk On's and that isn't a bad thing!!!

He could just limit Clemson to the 85 and keep the walk-ons.

I think he's saying that if a player is on the team, you have to give him a scholarship. Therefore no walk-ons. It will limit the practice squads.

As I said yesterday, the decision to go to 105 just makes no sense. The 105 just means more people will enter the Portal every year because there is no way a third of the players will ever see the field. Every fan that looks at recruiting numbers should forget all they ever know because there will be plenty of 2 star guys now.

If there is a two star who otherwise wouldn't be on scholarship, but with the increase now is, wouldn't that be a good thing?

I think it's just a chaos thing. I do believe it's effect is to drive lower programs into the dirt.
Is just unnecessary at this point to keep changing unnecessary things. No one is dictating this except ncaa... No courts have required it. Why do it at all?

85 is... and has always been too low....

maybe the number shouldn't be 105, but it should increase. I think more dev. players (ie..2 star) get signed. Your former walk-on is now a scholly player.
I just hope this means our OL room increases to past the traditional 15 number...which is too low and gives zero room for error.

This is like regulatory capture. The big money is using regulation to

change the rules to further favor the big money.
Like minimum wage helps big corporations who can use economies of scale to better absorb higher labor costs until they have the capital to implement automation. Smaller local businesses can't absorb their primary expense going up for long and certainly can't leverage capital to automate on pace with the giant corporations. So the large corporations trick everyone to remove unskilled workers from the workforce and instead put them on the dole... a dole that is spent on low-priced goods processed and distributed with automation. Yay dystopia. A sea of government dependents getting "benefits" paid for by huge taxes on the shrinking middle class that are going back to corporations who rigged the system in the name of "progress."
Wow that was quite a deviation from my original point.

You can stiill only play 11 at a time. Today's players will not sit and wait around for playing time. Schools will either pay top dollar for 3rdt stringers or the transfer portal will be even busier. Think about this move, this is in reaction to the large number of players trapped in tbe portal with no landing spot. By expanded the scholarship limits, now the NCAA can say that the portal is not an issue. This will change nothing other than increase of transfers.

I don’t think the point was explained at any depth in Dabos comments. Most positions are at least 3 deep some like RB are 4 deep with players who get on the field or are being developed. 22 x3= 66
Unless you are a redshirt you are probably not on the scout team if you are part of Todays 85 scholarship world. Let’s say scout positions are 2 deep to prepare for injuries. That is another 44
That gets us to 110 players. You add 2 snappers, 2 kickers and 2 punters and Now you are up to 116 players.
If everyone has to be on scholarship and scholarships are limited to 105- then you have to change the way you run your program differently.

Man. The sum of "unintentional" consequences from the NCAA's baffling decision making sure is looking more and more calculated to disproportionately impact different conferences/teams (but likely just purely incompetent).
