So they created a novel wolf design using some bits of actual dire wolf dna to mimick 14 traits of a dire wolf and ivf’d into a gray wolf host.

It’s a derivative work of art, the biological equivalent of modding a 1960s muscle car. Or taking a classic song and digitally sampling it into some new piece of music.

It’s basically like a labradoodle but with some ancient dog dna from a species who didn’t survive the evolutionary competition.

I prefer Dire Straits.***

Many have pointed out it's not an exact clone.

Interesting though. Because the closer genetic match you can find in a living animal, the less you have to modify.

One day, we can take an ancient animal, find the closest current living match, run the genes to locate those that are different, and modify ALL the genes, making it a true replica. They only edited 20 genes, and would probably have a few thousand to edit to make an exact replica. The gene editing process needs to be refined, but it's interesting they could pick out the genes that made the biggest difference in appearance.

Still a gray wolf with a high percentage of dire wolf traits is pretty cool.

so...societal question here...this means NO MORE endangered animals?

Apr 11, 2025, 11:08 AM

We can now remove all the endangered animal lists and the prohibitive govt regulations protecting them because now we can just genetically engineer new ones?

So the red cockaded woodpecker, the northern long-eared bat, the damm sea turtles we had to ban football game Hill balloons over, the snail darter, the spotted owl, etc etc etc.....they are no longer in threat of extinction because we can make more of them now.

This is GREAT news.

Unless you are just nerdy enough to spend half an hour listening to Hank Green. Here are some answers for those of you who are science nerds:
