Bradley Pinion to turn pro?

Dec 26, 2014, 4:42 PM

After hanging out here at the bowl practices and talking to several people within the program, I am hearing that punter Bradley Pinion is turning pro and has already told the coaches. I asked head coach Dabo Swinney about it after practice today, and he said, "I am not going to get into all of that right now. We will get back to school in January and either he's here or he isn't."

I've heard that there aren't a lot of specialists coming out in this year's draft and that his camp says this would be his optimal time. I am sure we will hear from him after the bowl game.

I heard that rumor a week or two ago here on Tnet

Can't remember who posted it but I'm sure it came from inside sources at TCI. :)

I read that and posted it here

Dec 26, 2014, 4:49 PM

That's just odd, has a kicker...let alone a punter ever left early to go pro? I guess he's just relying on making a team in camp, few punters are drafted in the late rounds. I think there may be 1 or 2 punters drafted each year. Good luck to him if that's the case tho.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I find it strange. He won't get drafted..no punter will.

Dec 26, 2014, 4:56 PM

As David said, it must be a caculated move by the derth of specialists coming out this year.

Frankly, he needs to improve his leg strength for kickoffs and punts.

He also would have the opportunity to try field goals in the future; something that would be an asset to a kickers arsenal.

I believe the last one to come our early was Sebastian Janikowski from FSU. He went 17th overall to the Raiders. He left partly because of skill, but mainly to bring his mom to America and off the field issues

we'll score so often that we won't need him next year.

This is a mistake

Dec 28, 2014, 9:36 PM [ in reply to I'm just going to pretend it's because he thinks ]

Pinion did not even make honorable mention in the ACC, much less any national honors,
inconsistent on KO and punts this season.

Hope he has a back-up plan. Good, even really good punters are a dime a dozen.
Without hang times pushing 5 sec with 45 yard average, he wont be getting a second look.

He will find a spot as a camp leg but after that its whatever his degree will get him.

I would imagine that Dabo has told his, emphatically, that he is making a mistake.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Bad for us, but probably best for him. He's ready. Why not

Dec 26, 2014, 4:54 PM

get one year closer to the big pay day. I would expect him to be one of the best in the NFL eventually. Top 12 NFL kickers and/or punters make $1 Million - $3 Million. Rookie contracts are for less than half that.

Re: Bad for us, but probably best for him. He's ready. Why not

Dec 27, 2014, 1:39 AM

Really? To my recollection he was the second best punter on the field every game this year.

For real though he needs to work on his touch. Kicking balls to the 15 to 19 yard line every freaking time is not exactly what I would call pining a team deep. He is a punter. He needs to stay. He will make a team whether he goes this year or not. Silly decision.

Re: Bad for us, but probably best for him. He's ready. Why not

Dec 27, 2014, 1:45 AM

Every punt made inside the 10 yard line will increase his stock greatly, if he stays. Plus security for a lifetime with a degree under his wing.

Good luck to Bradley if he goes. To me, he is too inconsistent to make it in the NFL but hopefully I'm wrong.

I agree, can't boot it deep every time

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Geeze, whats with all these players wanting to

Dec 26, 2014, 9:03 PM

Turn pro here lately? Hes just a kicker! Kid needs to take advantage of that free education while he has the chance. Trust me, those degrees don't come cheap.

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Im a guess that he will have his degree by summer...

Dec 27, 2014, 11:18 AM

may already have it -

I say we just go for it on every fourth down if we have any next year. I mean if we HAVE to kick it, grab some dude from the rugby intramural squad.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Seems like he needs to improve on pinning teams deep

Dec 26, 2014, 9:29 PM

I know he's got pretty good inside the 20 numbers but i swear he also punts to like the 17-19 yard line no matter where he's kicking from.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Seems like he needs to improve on pinning teams deep

Dec 26, 2014, 9:33 PM

Wow he is good but Idk if he is NFL good. If he has already graduated then I can see it. If not bad move

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Seems like he needs to improve on pinning teams deep

Dec 26, 2014, 9:40 PM

This is just downright stupid. At best 2 punters go in the draft. He will be picked up in FA MAYBE and then cut s month later.

Nobody wastes a ton of time or resources on specialist in the league. They are cut after one miss. Pinion is only a punter as well (his kickoff duties this season were just not very good).

#### this is so dumb

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I love Pinion, but he is slightly overrated

Dec 27, 2014, 9:28 AM

Punters and kickers have absolutely no business leaving early. Pinion can't even kick it into the end zone consistently on kickoffs, and I have seen several weak punts out of him this year. A guy his size should be booting it deep every time.

The dude is a friggin specialist....what does he have to lose by staying? It's not like he has a high risk of injury, and his stock could only improve.

Poor Bradley, guess he just couldn't handle living it up another year in the greatest college town on earth

Re: Bradley Pinion to turn pro?

Dec 27, 2014, 10:13 AM

I wasn't going bring this up, since usually punters aren't a head line topic.

BUT!!
With his talents and ability. I think he has really under achieved.
He should be doing all the kicking and punting; FGs- and making a run
a All Amer. numbers.

Just saying..

Thank this is bad news for us

Dec 27, 2014, 10:23 AM

Pinion was our offensive MVP in many games keeping the D in good field position when our offense was struggling and going 3 and out at light speed pace the way we did at times under chads fast tempo O. I hope we have someone that has the leg strength of Pinion that can step in on punts and kickoffs. Lakkip is listed as the current backup and from his few kickoffs and FG's this season he doesn't have the leg strength of Pinion and will be unable to kick the ball out of the end zone on kickoffs unless he greatly improves. Lets hope Spence's weight room training this season has really paid off.

Re: Bradley Pinion to turn pro?

Dec 28, 2014, 10:14 PM [ in reply to Re: Bradley Pinion to turn pro? ]

As a specialist you typically don't make a team based solely on your college career. Coming back or going will have nothing to do with his draft stock. This is not a position player whose draft stock will rise and drop. A specialist makes the team with tryouts (heck it feels like every week a team is trying out a kicker). They are added and dropped frequently
