I thought Mullen might have just avoided getting rolled on but obviously not

Those are the best words I've heard for this season! For Heather Dinich and other Clemson naysayers, here we come!

H ell yeah, come back strong TL and light WF up.
Oh yeah unless it’s late in the NC game and on a winning drive.
Please young man, step out of bounds or throw that ball to the Esso Club.

Man, did that hit look like the definition of targeting to anyone else? I mean it was right to the Crown of his head. The defender lunged forward and hit TL in the crown of his head with his shoulder pads with force-able contact. TL was falling on the ground losing his balance (defenseless player). It is pretty upsetting how this was not even looked at upstairs.

Re: TNET: Scott updates injuries with Lawrence, Mullen

Not sure how it's defined exactly, but the rule is not intended to allow ball carriers to lower their heads (sorry, TL) to become targets.

Obviously TL's body position wasn't intentional. But how did you want the Cuse player to tackle him?

Next time Trevor will give himself up. No way he's tightroping that sideline for the first down.

Go Back and look, you will see that the defender had time to change direction before making the hit, and his shoulder pads plowed into the side of Trevor's neck!!!

Original los was the 50. He’d already gone oub and the defender was 3 yards from Trevor when Trevor was going down. 1. Defender could and should have put his hands out and rolled him out of bounds.

As allorange said look at the tv tape, not the one posted here. Defender lowered his head and shoulders and went for the head. Dirty play imo and nfl he gets fined and kicked out of game and he should have been here too. That’s exactly what the refs are supposed to be protecting...

And that’s not orange colored glasses.

Take a look at the Kentucky/Coot game, if I remember correctly. Wasn’t a Kentucky player ejected for targeting? Look at the hit. Same style, same conditions and yet no call. Definitely targeting.

Nope. By the definition of targeting it’s pretty clearly not targeting.

Yep, and Muse gets a targeting call bc of a face mask to face mask hit. Most of the ACC refs for sure don't have a clue of what they are doing. They will throw up a flag and make something up when the flag hits the ground!!!

I thought the same thing. I saw similar hits called targeting in other games on Saturday. Plus, he had stepped out of bounds.

How does a physician confuse a concussion with a neck strain? Maybe there is more that they aren’t telling us, but that certainly isn’t a good look for our team doctors.

Maybe this is why they said “concussion like symptoms “ instead of “concussion “.

Even if he didn’t have a concussion, the way he got hit, I wouldn’t be surprised if his bell was pretty well rung either way

He was never diagnosed with a concussion. Concussion protocol comes into effect anytime someone is displaying concussion like symptoms. That doesn’t mean he had a concussion.

That is what I posted right after looking at the hit in the replays, I thought that it looked more of a neck sprain injury than anything else by the way it looked like a whip lash sort of injury!!!

Targeting....

Oct 1, 2018, 4:08 PM

this is according to the rules. "Leading with helmet, shoulder, forearm, fist, hand or elbow to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area .

Seems pretty clear to me that based on the rule above it was targeting.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Targeting....

Oct 1, 2018, 5:59 PM

That is not what the rule says. The section you seem to be selectively quoting actually says:

"No player shall target and make forcible contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent (See Note 2 below) with the helmet, forearm, hand, fist, elbow or shoulder. This foul requires that there be at least one indicator of targeting (See Note 1 below).

"Note 1: "Targeting" means that a player takes aim at an opponent for purposes of attacking with forcible contact that goes beyond making a legal tackle or a legal block or playing the ball. Some indicators of targeting include but are not limited to:

Launch—a player leaving his feet to attack an opponent by an upward and forward thrust of the body to make forcible contact in the head or neck area
A crouch followed by an upward and forward thrust to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area, even though one or both feet are still on the ground
Leading with helmet, shoulder, forearm, fist, hand or elbow to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area
Lowering the head before attacking by initiating forcible contact with the crown of the helmet

"Note 2: Defenseless player (Rule 2-27-14):

A player in the act of or just after throwing a pass.
A receiver attempting to catch a forward pass or in position to receive a backward pass, or one who has completed a catch and has not had time to protect himself or has not clearly become a ball carrier.
A kicker in the act of or just after kicking a ball, or during the kick or the return.
A kick returner attempting to catch or recover a kick, or one who has completed a catch or recovery and has not had time to protect himself or has not clearly become a ball carrier.
A player on the ground.
A player obviously out of the play.
A player who receives a blind-side block.
A ball carrier already in the grasp of an opponent and whose forward progress has been stopped.
A quarterback any time after a change of possession.
A ball carrier who has obviously given himself up and is sliding feet-first"

So sure, based on the "rule above" that you quoted it was targeting. But the rule you quoted isn't the targeting rule.

Re: Targeting....

He was going down, and the guy could/should have avoided the hit. That is what the rule is supposed to stop.
