A container ship hit the Francis Scott Key bridge, and the entire bridge collapsed. Many vehicles are in the water.

I read up to 20 vehicles still in the water.
My question is how on earth did this happen?

They said the ship was enormous and looked to be having some sort of power issues or hydraulics. The bridge was built in the 70's and supposedly not up to current standards.

Unprotected base. The 1000’ ship hit the bridge support structure. Footings are too small to take the lateral impact.
Look at the Ravenel Cooper River bridge. The man made islands ‘May’ protect the bridge supports. A similar incident occurred in 1980 to the Sunshine Skyway bridge, but this one is worse.

The missing are construction workers who were fixing potholes
And the harbor pilots were heroes; their warning kept vehicles off of that bridge

That is terrible. It's hard to believe that could happen with GPS tracking.

terrible accident. The fact it happened in the middle of the night instead of during the day when many more cars/people would have been on that bridge is a slight bit of decent news out of this...

They say it was an accident, not a terrorist incident. But looking at the video,

it certainly appears the container ship STEERED its way directly at that bridge pylon. It even made a sharp, under power turn at the last second when power came back on, to hit it nearly dead center? You can see the black smoke when the engines (?) power back up just before impact, and the ship turns.
Again, prayers for all involved, the fact there was that much traffic on that bridge (~20 vehicles, the story said) at 1 am in the morning just shows how busy Baltimore is, and how much they will be impacted by the loss of life, and the loss of the bridge. It will take the city YEARS to rebuild it, if they ever do.

The ship lost propulsion and warned authorities that a collision was coming...

The ship directed its trajectory to hit the most solid structure of the bridge

The bridge supports, if build to "current" code/standard might have held up under this impact.
A 1970's bridge that has not been updated has 0 chance to stand up against a container ship of 1000ft. Very unfortunate but the pilot of the ship did this on purpose to try and minimize damage instead of heading under the bridge which would have definitely collapsed the structure. I am sure this ship pilot did not know if this was a reinforced support structure but it was the right choice under extreme circumstances
