of a burger at the local McDonald's climbs, as do restaurants, hotels, transportation (uber/buses/taxis), etc.

Trick is to earn Nashville wages working in Tupelo, Mississippi. ;)

About 6 years ago I promised my daughter that we would take a long weekend motorcycle trip down the Natchez Trace parkway before she left for college (I was feeling inspired by a re-read of “Zen atao motorcycle maintenance” at the time)

Well, she’s leaving for college this fall and she’s never forgotten that promise, so we are going.

Plan to take a side trip off the Trace to see The King’s birthplace. I am sure it’ll be massively underwhelming but this trip really isn’t about the destinations.

I'm sad to report that the King's birthplace is indeed underwhelming.

Tupelo does have some decent restaurants though. If you want to go 30 minutes or so off the trace, I can shoot you some recs for Oxford.

Also, don't speed on the trace unless you want a federal speeding ticket.

Apologies if I'm telling you stuff you already know.

Very familiar with the trace but Ill take those

Summer is a great time to go since it won't be crowded.

If your daughter likes to shop, there are a ton of boutiques on the square aimed at college-aged girls with money (or dads in tow). Square Books is a really cool bookstore and worth spending some time in. It has a big section on local, Mississippi, and Southern authors. Rowan Oak (Faulkner's House) is a fairly touristy attraction but the grounds are pretty and I think its $5. Ole Miss's campus, especially around the Grove, is nice and would be good to ride through at least.

For music: check the Lyric Theater to see if they have any concerts scheduled. Proud Larry's and the Blind Pig will frequently have live music and the food there is good (though there are better options). Thacker Mountain Radio, the local NPR variety show, records during summers (I believe) and can be a good local experience. I haven't been to Foxfire Ranch personally, but have heard their Sunday shows are fun. That is out of town though.

Oxford has a million good places to eat. It is tough to go wrong. John Currence is the big local chef. City Grocery ($$$) is his flagship but I prefer Boure ($$). Saint Leo has great food. Snackbar is a good off-square happy hour option, especially if you like oysters. Ajax is a local institution: good Southern food but so heavy you will need a nap afterwards. Handy Andy is my favorite cheap option. Get the burger and skip the BBQ. South Depot Taco is like a local Moes/Chipotle if that is more your speed. For breakfast, check out Bottletree Bakery.

People might recommend, but I would skip: Square Pizza (drunk food), the Beacon (maybe the only truly bad restaurant in town), Lenora's (good but nothing special), and McEwens (same). Your daughter is probably too young to get in, but I hate the Library bar with a passion.

If you can get into any of the upstairs bars on the Square, sitting on the balconies and enjoying a drink on a nice day is a true Oxford experience. They may not let in anyone under 21 though. Volta is a good second option. It has a good patio (and solid food, especially the feta dip) but isn't right on the square.

Depending on how much time you are spending in Oxford, Taylor Grocery is worth considering. It is 15 minutes or so south of town. It has the best catfish I've ever had in my life. When school is in session, it gets very crowded and people will brown bag beer and wine and drink on the front porch area. Fun experience and you might be able to get seated quickly with 2 people during summer. Some other outlying restaurants to consider if you are going that way are Como Steakhouse (in Como); TriBecca Allie Cafe (in Sardis, some of the best NY pizza I've ever had); and B.T.C. Grocery (really good brunch, in Water Valley).

Sorry that was so long.

The nice things about the shopping stuff is that on the bike, there’s only so much she can buy. Lol.

Further out to the country anymore. That was my plan, as my need to be in Nashville proper decreased, move further out and buy 5 acres with a nice house and a huge pole barn garage for song.

That idea ended around early 2021. If it’s within 75 minutes of downtown Nashville, it’s massively overpriced now.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well, everything is overpriced now, if that helps.

I have 20 acres of land, and land, just rural farmland in BFE, SC is now going for almost $10K an acre. It's insane. I have 2-3 people per week calling me, and I'm getting 2-3 pieces of junkmail in the mailbox with cash offers on those 20 acres. The spam emails, letters, and calls are offering over $5K an acre. The real value is close to $10K. Prices were $2-3k an acre forever.
