Everyone in the South calls them tennis shoes. We can easily pick out the fresh ship-ins because they call them sneakers.

I call them (and have always called them) high tops, or maybe basketball shoes.
Tennis shoes are always low tops, a high top would never register as a "tennis shoe" by me.
Not sure I've ever used the word sneakers. Probably have but very rarely.
